The Importance of Being Quentin
Advantages: Unusual, moving story; loads of dry wit and humor; often thought-provoking, unique ideas; never boring.
Disadvantages: Absolutely none.
...?As soon as I stepped out of my mother's womb onto dry land, I realized that I had made a mistake?that I shouldn't have come, but the trouble with children is that they are not returnable.?
--Quentin Crisp, ?The Naked Civil Servant?
-----------------------------------
With his usual droll wit, Quentin Crisp, that famously eccentric Englishman and resident of New York City, thus described his birth in his wonderfully penned autobiography.
So who was this chap Crisp, you ask, and what was he famous for?
Well, he might have been the most amusing and colorful wit of the last century. He was famous for just being himself?Quentin Crisp?effeminate homosexual, artist's model, occasional actor, superb writer and brilliant wit. Crisp could not live without being who he was?a man who was attracted to other men?and never thought to...

I had a One Night Stand with Caroline!
Advantages: it's Caroline!, hilareous, random, entertaining
Disadvantages: region 1
...One Night Stand three times in a row! It is definitely one of the most hysterical things...ever!
Now I paid £8 for this from Amazon, and I think that is a wonderful price, especially considering it had to be imported! I suppose if it was just a random comedian I might not have paid that much, but for Caroline, it is ideal! I just wish there were more DVDs of her comedy available. Her comic timing is perfect and her stories are never dull. I think if you are a fan of her already then you will find this extremely amusing. However if you are new to her work then you are still bound to laugh along with the audience, who give her a standing ovation at the end of her act! Yes, she really was that good!
I don't think I've laughed this hard in such a long time, but thanks to Caroline I have a bag of laughter right on one disc. It is an amazing...

FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Caroline In The City (Season 1) 3 Discs
Advantages: Funny, light-hearted entertainment
Disadvantages: Episodes out of order, sound & picture out of sync in 2 episodes
...expected for a show that aired in the early 1990s and doesn't diminish enjoyment of the episodes.
Unfortunately, the episodes are out of sequence on the discs, and so the storylines appear disjointed. This is a problem if you want to just press 'play all' and watch, but an episode list is easily obtainable from many online sources and so with a little effort you can watch them in order.
One thing that does really spoil the DVDs is that for two of the episodes, the picture and sound are not in sync.
This might be off-putting for someone who's not seen the series before but if you can put up with the flaws you may be pleasantly surprised by the show. For real Caroline fans, this is probably a must-have set despite the flaws....

Zagazoo - a brilliant book, especially for boys/parents of boys
Advantages: Quirky, warm, funny and surprisingly deep!
Disadvantages: A big (albeit light) book, so little babies will need you to hold it for them
...The image that Ciao is choosing to illustrate this book is completely wrong - it's actually an A4-sized book with a white background and a typical wild Quentin Blake illustration on the front of a couple opening a brightly-coloured parcel to find a baby in it!
We were given this by some friends when our son was born 2 years ago. We had a quick look through it and a bit of a laugh, but then put it away for a few months until Boy Wonder became interested in books with words and pictures, rather than just pictures.
We started reading Zagazoo to him when he was about a year old, and the first couple of times, he wasn't that keen on it. But it's really grown on him over the least few months, and it's now most definitely a favourite of his.
Zagazoo tells the story of George and Bella, who are very happy together dusting, making model...

He has only one boot...
Advantages: Great illustrations
Disadvantages: Rather short
...Animals often seem to be the main focus of children's poetry, but Mister Magnolia by Quentin Blake is the story of a poor man who had only one boot:
'He has green parakeets
who pick holes in his suit -
And some very fat owls
who are learning to hoot -
But Mr Magnolia
has only one boot.'
Mister Magnolia may sound like a sorry character, but lacking a boot doesn't seem to stop him having fun. He dances while his two sisters play the flute, takes children for a ride on his scooter, and juggles with fruit at the market stall.
This is a light-hearted piece of narrative poetry that has a happy ending as a little girl presents Mister Magnolia with a parcel that contains another boot. It doesn't match the one he already has, but never mind, it's a boot, and Mister Magnolia is deliriously happy. It might seem like a strange story, but...

Early Cash and I don't mean money
Advantages: Classic , fresh , raw , entertaining , a little piece of history .
Disadvantages: May be too dated for some .
...Background
Johnny Cash had been recording and playing for quite a while before I came across him properly as an artiste. In the early seventies my brother bought "Johnny Cash live at St Quentin" and it was a real eye opener, or should I say ear opener to me. Previously to this I had sort of heard him in passing but not taken that much notice. As a flighty teenager he had seemed far too old and straight to appeal to me. It took my advancing years to truly get a feel for the man and his music. However "San Quentin" was one of the first rungs on the ladder.
My boyfriend at the time, and Husband to this day, bought the L.P before I knew him and so, among our differing tastes in music, this was one firm favourite. He has bought Cash?s music over the years right up to his final offerings and for me the music matured well along...

The Green Ship - A Real Gem
Advantages: Heart warming story, great illustrations, one to read and re-read
Disadvantages: None
...My 4 year old son received this book for Christmas and I have so enjoyed reading it to him that I'm sharing the experience with you all.
The Green Ship is written and illustrated by Quentin Blake, who you will probably know from his illustrations for Roald Dahl. As well as providing illustrations for many other children's authors, he has also written his own books, some of the most well known are Mister Magnolia and Clown. He was Children's Laureate in 1999 and generally considered a national institution.
The Green Ship takes you into the world of fantasy - two children, whilst staying with their aunt one summer, climb over a wall into the neighbouring garden of a large house. Here they discover a 'ship' made out of hedges trimmed to be a bow and stern, two trees clipped to look like funnels and two tall trees with a few branches...
