Hours of fun and cheaper than Brio

Advantages: Inexpensive, compatible with other sets, good for imaginative play
Disadvantages: Some broken track in 18 months, but not too unreasonable

...My son was given his first train set for Christmas when he was nearly 2 years old. My husband was overjoyed because obviously this meant that he would need to put it together, and test the train, and?you get the picture. I don't think that men ever really grow out of train-sets. The set that our son was given was from Tesco and comprised wooden track in a figure of eight, complete with hump-backed bridge where the tracks crossed, a wooden engine and three carriages, plus a couple of buildings, animals and trees. The sections of track fitted together quite easily but loosely enough that now, age 3, my son is able to put it together himself. They are reasonably robust, and wipe-clean, but we have suffered one or two sections where the piece that inserts into the next section has snapped off; this might be due to my younger son having...

..., in fact the incline is 75%. There are two carriages that work on a pulley system powered by the water from the sea, as one carriage falls it pulls the other one up. It is such a simple idea that it is ingenious and its invention inspired many similar lifts, including those at Scarborough a little further down the Yorkshire coast, although they were converted to diesel power in the 1930's. The carriage cars date from 1979 and are constructed from aluminium. They are however based on the design of the original cars and look very authentic. The cliff lifts operate at weekends between March and October and daily between May and September. Children and concessions can travel for 35p.
