As time goes by Casablanca just gets better
Advantages: Classic film given the treatment it deserves
Disadvantages: none
...This is an indisputable classic, constantly near the top of polls on the best and most loved movies of all time. I got hooked in my early teens and before long a six-foot poster of Bogart in classic snappy suit and cigarette in hand looked down on me from my bedroom wall. Watching the film now and looking back (one or two years later!) it's still easy to see how the mixture of humour, style and heroism won me over then and hopefully this features-laden disc will help introduce the film to a new audience.
The story is set in Casablanca, Morocco in 1941 when the city is a vital point in the escape route for refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe. From here planes departed for Lisbon and then the United States but official exit visas were needed to embark the plane. Casablanca itself is allegedly under French control but with the Vichy...

Casablanca - why is this hammy film so addictive?
Advantages: Can be seen over and over again
Disadvantages: Not many
...Don?t get me wrong ? I will watch Casablanca again and again, and thrill to those moments in the film we all know ? but can this film really be one of the best ever made? Just watch the opening, and ask yourself whether it is has quality, or does it resemble an early episode of The Saint? Yes, I know about how the director used certain techniques to draw the attention from and to certain areas, but does he really rank alongside Fellini or Bunuel? That said, I?ll still switch on whenever it?s shown, but why? I think it must rank as one of the top movies that people would vote to see again and again, but the reason evades me. Weird!!...

The Case of the Boozy Caboose Part One
Advantages: Gets you out of your armchair even if its only as far as the fridge. A new taste
Disadvantages: Not one of the best
...with the relevant sources on the internet.
CHAPTER ONE. CASABLANCA.
So here we are in sunnier and hotter climes ? Casablanca, the economic capital of Morocco, North Africa. Morocco was a French protectorate from 1912 to 1956. This helps to explain why the roads are labelled as ?Rues? and ?Boulevards?. It may also explain the ancestry and nature of this brew.
Casablanca Beer is brewed in that city by Brasseries du Maroc. Part of the ?Société Brasseries du Maroc (SBM) it is the leader on the beverage market in Morocco. It offers a wide range of products, either own-brand (Sidi Harazem, Casablanca, etc.) or under franchised brands (Coca-Cola, Schweppes, etc.) through its subsidiary Société Centrale des Boissons Gazeuses. SBM has 7 bottling units and 3 breweries and runs a bottling and distribution network with 21 distribution centres...

Insert your own cliched title here
Advantages: Virtually flawless.
Disadvantages: The flashback scene - Bogart doesn't look right smiling!
...After fifty years of almost continuous referencing and parody, all the great lines in 'Casablanca' seem like a bit of a joke when you witness them in their original form. So, let's get it out of the way from the start, shall we? "I stick my neck out for no-one", "Play it, Sam", "Here's looking at you kid", "Round up the usual suspects", "Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life"...I've missed dozens, but now we've got the quotes out of the way, we can concentrate on Casablanca the movie, rather than Casablanca the grab-bag of pop culture references.
Humphrey Bogart, in perhaps his greatest role, is Rick, an bitter ex-pat American who now runs the imaginatively named 'Rick's' in Casablanca. Here he is kept company by the loyal, piano playing Sam (Dooley Wilson) and sporadically flirts...

Play it again Sam
Advantages: Too many to mention
Disadvantages: none
..., and Best Screenplay.
It could all have been different since the central role was also offered to George Raft, and even Ronald Reagan!
The story is set in Casablanca, Morocco in 1941. The country is nominally under the French Vichy government control but the Nazi Germans also exert a strong Influence. The US hasn't entered the war yet and maintains diplomatic relations with Vichy France. Casablanca is a place full of spies, crime and intrigue. As the gradual Nazi takeover of Europe continued refugees travelled from the major cities to Marseilles in order to go across the Mediterranean to Algeria and then to Casablanca in French Morocco. Here those who could afford it could get exit visas to Lisbon, and from Lisbon to the US. But many were forced to wait in Casablanca and some never left.
THE CAST:
Humphrey Bogart-Richard "Rick" Blaine...

A Classic Romance
Advantages: great acting, brilliant plot,
Disadvantages: impossible to have any disadvantages
...doesn't make things any different. It was made in 1942 and it was directed by Michael Curtiz. This film won many Oscars which was good for it's time but it was also nominated for many acting categories but won more for behind the scenes work.
The story is set in Casablanca in Morocco, it is a place where many French fled and Europeans to get away from the German invasions during the war. The people are also going here to get visa's so they can go to America and be safe since it is World War Two. Casablanca s a very nice place with it's markets and culture and the club owned by Rick (Humphrey Bogart)which is named Rick's. He plays a moody club owner and he never joins anyone at their table to have a drink but then one day when walks in he all of a sudden does join a table and has a drink, everyone is quite in shock.
In the club Rick is...

See This Classic Again, Sam
Advantages: great story, acting, action
Disadvantages: it's in black and white but see review
...This is truly one of the greatest American films which captures wartime adventure and romance elements in this classic film along with a great cast.
The film tells about an ex-freedom fighter named Rick Blaine(Humphrey Bogart) who runs a nightclub in Casalanca during early World War II. Despite pressure from Captain Renault(Claude Rains), Rick's Cafe is a place for refugees seeking passage to escape to America.
Rick is suddenly approached by rebel leader Victor Laszio(Paul Henried) and his wife Ilsa(Ingrid Bergman). Rick loved Ilsa long ago but when the Nazis invaded Paris, she left him. Ilsa wants Victor to escape to America but she seems to have old feelings for Rick.
Ilsa tells Rick she wants to stay in Casablanca with the line "You must decide for the both of us". Rick decides to help Ilsa and Victor escape to America...

I'll Watch This Again...Maybe Not Today...
Advantages: Great Story, Good Performances, Charasmatic in Black & White, Humourous, Emotional - It's Got Everything!
Disadvantages: None That I Can Think Of
...Sorry about the title.....I couldn't resist!
Now I'm not a film critic. This is only my second film review so you'll probably realise Barry Norman hasn't got much to worry about right now.
But I have to write about this film after watching it for the first time last week (August 06). I'd been hearing about it for years so hired it whilst taking part in a free dvd trial with Lovefilm.
Call me dumb but I didn't realise it was made in 1942. But it was. And it was made in the USA too for anyone else who is as shockingly ignorant of the facts as I was.
It's a charasmatic black & white movie set in - unsurprisingly - Casablanca, North Africa during the second world war.
Rick Blaine (a fine, steely performing Humphrey Bogart) runs a bar in Casablanca. A place where people come to do deals, to try and escape Casablanca to...

for all those skeptics of classic movies....
Advantages: true classic, suspense, magical,
Disadvantages: none
...Before watching Casablanca, I (probably like many other young people) had heard of this timeless classic but had never made any effort to watch it. More people have probably referenced the film than have actually seen it, and I was definitely one of them. Like many other young people, I was skeptical and dubious of these older films. Fortunately for me, I took the plunge and watched the film and from then on the tides have turned.
I was very impressed by this film and came to understand why there has been such hype about this timeless classic. Set in Casablanca in North Africa during the Second World War, this film is full of mystery and suspense. The acting is fantastic, full of drama, passion and glamour. The filming is superb, the lighting brilliant and the general ambiance compelling.
So for all of those people out...

Play it, Sam
Advantages: Quotable lines and filmstars the way they used to be
Disadvantages: Quality isn't so good anymore
...Ah, Casablanca. I must be one of very few members of Ciao who can claim to have seen this film when it first came out, back in the dark days of the Second World War. (Yes, I learned to use a computer. Isn't it amazing?)
Over the years, interest in this film has grown and grown. It made icons of its stars, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, and contains not only a memorable title-song in 'As Time Goes By', but also a number of lines that are quoted regularly even today - albeit often they are quoted incorrectly. 'Play it again, Sam', for instance, does not feature anywhere in this film. That's right; that's a misquote; the 'again' is not actually part of the script at all.
Casablanca is a film that is rather hard to put into any specific category. It's a romance, and it's a drama, and it's a war-story. Bogart, as most will...
