Hotel and Casino Movenpick, Tangier, Morocco

Advantages: Looks lovely and decor great
Disadvantages: poor food and service in restaurant

...About Movenpic hotels: The Movenpic hotels are part of a multi national group of exclusive 5* hotels which began in Swizerland that state their aim as: "Thirteen thousand people, over one hundred professions, and one shared goal: to pamper guests and to live authentic hospitality. Each and every day. " The Movenpic Tangier: From the outside this hotel is quite modern and looks very imposing . It is on the outskirts of Tangier right down the beachfront it is about 10 minutes drive from the main town so it is not really handy for getting to the town for awalk, you would need a taxi. However the setting offers lovely views of the coast, harbour and out to sea.I would think that the way the hotel is built that there would ot be many rooms without a good view. Inside the hotel; It is a very luxurious and expensive hotel...

hotel Le Tivoli, Agadir, Morocco

Advantages: lovely clean hotel, friendly, english speaking
Disadvantages: none

...After a relatiely short transfer from the airport, we were greeted by friendly reception staff and porters. Arrived in a huge family suite with a queen sized bed and two singles for the children, the room was clean with a lovely balcony, however the air conditioing wasn't great! Food was buffet style, great breakfasts, but were fairly repetitive, the scrambled eggs were to die for! Dinners were always great, something for everyone, even my fussy 4 and 7 year olds found plenty to eat with the large choice of dishes available, we stayed for a week and it was different every night. Buy water outside the hotel as it is quite expensive from the bar. Pool and surrounding area was always spotless, but I can imagine that it gets quite busy at the height of summer. No entertainment in the evenings meant that we were usually in bed before 10...

Two weeks in Central Morocco

Advantages: It's cheap, fascinating, beautiful and not even that far.
Disadvantages: The hassle.....

...the whole if Northern Africa; baguette bread, pastries, fries, omelettes and wonderful coffee are everywhere. What's more it is very cheap. Western food is also easy to come by, at least in the cities anyway. There are pizzeria's galore in Marrakech. Vegetarians also won't have a hard time despite what the guide book might tell you. Be aware that Morocco is a dry country; alcohol is forbidden to Muslims. That doesn't mean it isn't available but you can't just have a glass of wine or a beer with your meal. Many of the large hotels in Marrakech will have a bar, accessible to all, but you can expect to pay a similar price to that in the UK. The merchandise available in Morocco is wonderful and it is extremely cheap in comparison to Western prices. Cast iron lamps, jewellery, carpets (really rugs), fantastic ceramics, spices...

Review of General: Morocco

Morocco: Unique and fascinating country

Advantages: cheap and so many fascinating things to see
Disadvantages: can get alot of hassel of stall owners in marrakesh

...I went backpacking in June 2007 with a freind and the first place we started was in Morocco, which is in North Africa and it very different to anywhere else I visited on the trip. Every city had something unique about it and the people changed alot between each city. For example In Cassablance the dress code for women is much more relaxed than in Marrakesh. The first place we went to was Marrakesh. We landed here on a flight from Luton with Ryanir. The flight went smoothly and ran on time, but as soon as we enetered the airport you could tell that you were no longer in Western Europe where everything had to run smoothly and quickly! We waited for about 30 minutes to get through passport control, got our bags only to join another que for about 45 minutes to get some money changed over. They had no money exchange open and everyone from...

Essouira Morocco

Advantages: Small, chilled-out, friendly, pretty,place
Disadvantages: Not exactly the party capital of the world, if you do manage to find a bar serving alcohol, as a woman you will feel pretty uncomfortable in there.

...Having lived in Essouira for two months, I may be biased, but I can't recommend visiting Essouira enough. Having spent 5 months in Morocco as part of my gap year, I travelled extensively and didn't find anywhere in Morocco I liked as much as Essouira. As a young blonde white girl I had grown used to being hassled in the street, it's part of Morocco's charm, but if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of places like Fez and Marrakesh, Essouira is definately the place to head for. It is a small white-washed chilled out market town on Morocco's West coast. It's definately a tourist town, but somehow it doesn't feel that way. In contrast to the built up concrete tourist trap that is Agadir, staying in Essouira will give you a taste of the real Morocco. Cafe culture is strong and the ancient walls and the fortress overlooking...

MOROCCO FOR ME

Advantages: friendly hot cheap
Disadvantages: none

...Up to now I can honestly say I enjoyed my holiday in Morocco more than any other, I have been twice now. The first time we went was in September 2001,it wasn?t a direct choice we where just looking for a cheap deal to somewhere hot, we found our holiday on teletext it cost us £200 half board for one week We stayed at the hotel Kamal, which although one of the cheapest off the tourist hotels , was clean, warm and friendly, our room had twin beds a nice spacious sitting area with a sofa coffee table and small dining table and a small balcony overlooking the pool. The pool is not very big but seemed ample for the hotel as it never got overcrowded, it had a poolside snack bar and the chips from there are really nice and made a good lunchtime snack. All in all the food was pretty good. Breakfast was a croissant and a selection...

Review of Agadir (Morocco)

As time goes by Casablanca just gets better

Advantages: Classic film given the treatment it deserves
Disadvantages: none

...This is an indisputable classic, constantly near the top of polls on the best and most loved movies of all time. I got hooked in my early teens and before long a six-foot poster of Bogart in classic snappy suit and cigarette in hand looked down on me from my bedroom wall. Watching the film now and looking back (one or two years later!) it's still easy to see how the mixture of humour, style and heroism won me over then and hopefully this features-laden disc will help introduce the film to a new audience. The story is set in Casablanca, Morocco in 1941 when the city is a vital point in the escape route for refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe. From here planes departed for Lisbon and then the United States but official exit visas were needed to embark the plane. Casablanca itself is allegedly under French control but with the Vichy...

Review of Casablanca (Special Edition) (DVD)

Hotel International

Advantages: Location, breakfasts
Disadvantages: Poor rooms

...I recently went on a cultural girlie trip with a friend to Paris. I was left to do all the booking. I was looking for a reasonable hotel, near a metro stop, which included breakfast. I came across the Hotel International on various travel sites and it seemed fairly highly rated so I booked us in for three nights. LOCATION: The hotel is located 6 Rue Auguste Barbier in the 11th Arrondissement. The nearest Metro stop is Garcourt which was a two minute walk away and it was a five minute walk to Republique which gives good links to other lines. It's not really central enough to avoid the Metro and walk to the attractions but it was located so close to a stop that it seemed ideal. PRICE: Prices vary depending on size of room and season. There are singles, doubles and triples available. We paid Euro254 for the whole time...

Review of Hotel International, Paris

A holiday resort built on a great human tragedy

Advantages: A different type of holiday destintation
Disadvantages: None for me

...not really a place for excursions -- there are too many of Agadir's inhabitants who have many memories buried in the soil. The town of Agadir is very modern and clean. The stretch along the sea is filled with high-rise resorts and restaurants. The town has all the banks, travel agents, shops and more restaurants. This makes the town seem sterile and unpleasant, and while it is completely different from Casablanca or Marrakech, you still get the feel that you are somewhere completely different. Many of the modern buildings and hotels are built in Moroccan fashion, and the flowers and trees that surround the city are all very exotic. The beach is simply spectacular, and reached by a short walk through sand dunes. The beach is clean, long, wide and there is a continuous breeze coming in from the Atlantic, which makes it...

The New Moroccan Role

Advantages: "Colored cottons hang in the air?"
Disadvantages: "?Charming cobras in the square." (Crosby, Stills and Nash)

...and history Rather fortuitously, Morocco as a whole derives its name from Marrakech, which in turn derives its name from a Berber expression meaning ?Land of God?. Fortuitously because for only short periods in its history has Morocco been ruled from the Berber south rather than the Arab north. To be strictly geographical, Marrakech is located in the middle of Morocco, but not much happens inland further south or east. Fifty miles away in either direction one reaches the daunting High Atlas mountains, beyond which lies the desert. So in effect it is the main city of the south. Marrakech had its heyday in the 11th-13th centuries as the intermittent capital of a domain that stretched from northern Spain to Senegal in the south and as far to the east as Libya. In those days it was also the nexus of trade routes along which were carried...
