...Monte Cassino
by Matthew Parker.
Headline.
Hardback
£20.00
One of the hardest fought, bloodiest, battles of the Second World War, Matthew Parker recounts the tragic events that surrounded, and took place during, the battle for Monte Cassino.
It?s July 1943, Allied forces are landing on the beaches of Italy at Salerno hoping to quickly push on to Naples and Rome. However the Germans are in occupation and aiming to keep the Allies busy, away from the main theatres of battle on mainland Europe, for as long as possible.
German commanders Kesselring, von Vietinghoff and von Senger, having had several months to prepare, are heavily entrenched in the unforgiving Italian countryside and ready to bitterly defend the Gustav line.
Monte Cassino is told through real events and the recollections of the men and women who endured it...

Grim humour on the holy mountain
Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -
...soldiers in the 27th penal battallion, part of 21st Panzer Group, sent there due to thieving or due to their oppostion to the Hitler regime. There is the Old Man, the platoon sergeant Willy Beier; Corporal Josef Porta, the wide boy and scrounger; Sergeant Julius Heide, a fanatical Nazi; Tiny (sometimes referred to as Little John in some books), a huge simple-minded but aggresive bear of a man; Barcelona Blom, who served in the Condor Legion in the Spanish civil war; and Sven Hassel himself. He usually writes in the first person but depending on the translation some books are in the present tense. Other characters crop up in certain books but often get killed by the end!
Monte Cassino is written in the first person as as you probably guessed is about the battle on the slopes of that famous monastery in Italy during 1944...

Hotel La Pace - peace in an area famous for war
Advantages: Position, clean, secure parking
Disadvantages: Old fashioned
...of the Abbey of Montecassino. We did have a balcony overlooking the secure car park (locked around 11pm) to the hills beyond. The car park only has room for approx 8 cars but there is a further area behind, where we parked one night with no problems. There is also access back into the hotel from the car park so you don't have to walk around to the front of the building.
There is plenty of information in the reception area about Cassino and the surrounding areas during the war. This is provided in various languages including English, French and German.
There is shopping nearby and the receptionist was happy to advise people on the best places to buy various things. The town is fairly spread out with wide avenues and open spaces mainly due to the rebuilding that was necessary post-war. As well as the local shopping, there is a large...

INTO HELL AND BACK
Advantages: Informative and absorbing
Disadvantages: Very descriptive, not for the faint hearted.
...Following successful allied landings in Salerno, the Germans consolidated their position north of Naples, forming, under Commander Kesselring's orders, the Gustav Line. It was no surprise the Germans decided to use this naturally strong defensive position. At the centre on the line was Cassino, it was here for a period of 6 months, that the allied forces against insurmountable odds tried to break an impregnable German defence.
Italy, for the soldiers drafted there was supposed to be a holiday of sorts. After boiling hot days and freezing nights training in Africa, the American 36th 'Texas' Division as yet untried in battle and pleased for a change in scenery landed on Italian shores in Salerno.
Parker follows a number of combat units such as the 36th into the lead-up and ensuing battles, switching the focus from the American...

Sven Hassel.
Advantages: a very good read
Disadvantages: author has published better books
...on his way to join the french foreign legion when he met his wife to be.He wrote his first very successful novel based on his personal experiences and the experiences of his comrades. His books are not gospel but are a very realistic experience derived from someone who was there.Monte Cassino along with Liquidate Paris are his only books set outside of russia and are interesting for that reason alone. But if your looking to read your first Sven Hassel, then go for one of his Russian Front stories.I would suggest "reign of hell' or 'SS General'.Sven Hassel lives in Barcelona, last i heard he was still alive but dont Know about now.His book "Wheels of terror' was turned into a film some years back.I hope this has been some help to you....

Battlefield Gets Better!
Advantages: Excellent expansion pack for the original classic game.
Disadvantages: Price
...Road to Rome explodes onto the scene, by making the original Battlefield 1942 even better.
If you have Battlefield, you have to get the expansion pack. With six new battles, and two new armies the Italians and the French. Whether you want to fight your way to victory on the Italian or the French front, new weapons and vehicles are provided for you to attack.
There are eight new vehicles for you to command around some vast maps. Such as:
Battle Of Anzio, Battle of Salerno, Monte Cassino, Monte Santa Croce, Operation Baytown, and Operation Husky. These are all challenging maps with river crossings, steep terrain, church tower hideouts, and gun placements.
This expansion pack is a good buy, however at 20 pounds I feel there could of been more to offer.
There are some great servers online, which support Road to Rome...

Mushroom Madness and Funghi Forays
Advantages: Authentic Italian produce, fantastic restaurant, food tastings and cookery demos, friendly staff, additional online service
Disadvantages: Will cost you a fortune, shop can be a little cramped and busy
...There are only two things I really REALLY miss about living in Edinburgh. Firstly my Sunday morning walk through the Botanic Garden to Stockbridge for coffee and croissants. And secondly, dipping into Valvona & Crolla on Leith Walk to buy, taste, or even just smell what they have to offer.
Valvona & Crolla are something of an institution in Edinburgh: certainly more than just a shop. Mr Valvona himself was an Italian immigrant from the Cassino area in Italy, and began selling Italian food and wine in the "old town" of Edinburgh in the 1890's. Today the shop sells a huge range of Italian wines, Scottish whisky, coffee, biscuits, oils, pasta, cheese, meats, fruit and vegetables (imported direct from the market in Milano), freshly prepared breads baked on the premises, and everything else you would expect to find in an Italian...

Attenzione !!!!
Advantages: New maps, vehicles and weapons and excellent online play.
Disadvantages: Single player still a bit boring
...?Battlefield 1942 - The Road to Rome? is the first expansion pack for the hugely popular World War II game ?Battlefield 1942?. As I have already reviewed ?Battlefield 1942? I will not give much information here concerning the game play, if you are unfamiliar with the Battlefield series then read my review of Battlefield 1942 first to understand what this game is about. This review is aimed at those who have already purchased Battlefield 1942 and know what to expect from the game. This expansion pack, as you have probably guessed by the title, takes the battle to Italy where the American forces fought against the Germans and the Italians for the first time in World War II. It also gives the player the opportunity to play as the Free French forces in the Battle of Monte Cassino and Monte Santa Croce where they must attack German held...

Still the Battle goes on.
Advantages: Keeps up the high standards set by the first.
Disadvantages: None that i can see.
...BattleField 1942 is already one of the most widly played games across the globe. With the add on pack Road to Rome,BattleField 1942 is pushed forward creating a new front line.
It seems that yet again we are heading to the forefront of yet what seems to be another long and vigourous battle to stop good old Adolf in his push for global dominance. This time though it is brought to us with a difference. You can play as the French and the Italians
I feel that the game is at the forefornt of what online gaming is all about and with Road to Rome offering 6 new maps all with there own style and unique challenges it is sure to be a winner.
The add on Road to Rome is mainly based around an assault on Italy and its islands. Some of the maps that are deffinatly worth a mention have to be Monte Cassino and Monte Santa Croce...

Let The Last Post Sound
Advantages: Memories
Disadvantages: Sadness
...?t want to but writing it makes me feel a little better. But I want also to mark the passing of someone who was special to me. I have no other way of saying thank you to him for being who he was.
*** *** *** Early Life *** *** ***
Mick was actually given the name Emanuel by his parents but no one ever called him anything but Mick (or ?Uncle? Mick, when I was younger). I know little about his early life; strangely enough I know little even about my Dad?s early life. I do know that they were both born in Hull, Mick in September 1924.
During World War Two he was in the Army, being one of the survivors of the battle of Monte Cassino, 1944, one of the bloodiest battles in history. Around a quarter of a million died. Mick rarely talked about it ? but he admitted even in recent years to still having nightmares about it. The sixtieth...
