...I must admit that last night l had what must be the most exquisite culinary experience of my life. Janice and Stephen (friends) my partner David and myself treated ourselves to a meal in CAYENNE (formerly Roscoff's). Cayenne is situated at 7 Lesley House Shaftesbury Square, Belfast. Telephone number 028 90 331532. It has a cracker central location on Belfast’s Golden Mile. It was formerly the Roscoff's restaurant. The restaurant has not changed hands simply the owners Paul and Jeanne Rankin decided on a change of direction. Instead of the frumpy clinical dining for the great and the good, with their gold and platinum cards, they opened up their doors to the wider public to let them enjoy their amazing culinary skills. A top Rankin(g) restaurant!

Advantages: Great food, fantastic set meals, excellent service
Disadvantages: I don't live near it!

...As soon as we knew that we were going to spend a few days in Belfast, we started using the internet to seek out some likely places to dine. My first thought was "Cayenne", owned by celebrity chef Paul Rankin and his wife, Jeanne. Shippam's Crab Spread

Advantages: High Crab/Fish content, economical, choice of jar size
Disadvantages: New recipe contains Cayenne extract which can be a problem for some

...I have consumed many jars of Shippam's Crab spread/paste over the year's but have recently discovered that they have altered their recipe and now I do not find it to be as good, especially as I am sensitive to the Cayenne extract which is now one of the listed ingredients. I may have to look at rival brands, if any exist currently. I note that the other spreads in the Shippam's range do not contain Cayenne extract,so I am wondering why it is included in the Crab, along with full fat cheese, neither of which formed part of the previous recipe. Therefore, rating down from Very good to (just) Satisfactory. I realise others who do not share my sensitivity may be just as happy with the new version....
