Great sounding cassette recorder

Advantages: Great sound quality, good set of features, three heads
Disadvantages: No remote control

...Many people seem to think that cassette tapes, and analogue audio in general, have had their day. For me though, I have so many cassettes that converting them to a digital format is impractical, and buying CD copies or paying to download them, too expensive. Unfortunately, the quality of cassette decks in most mini-hifi systems these days is very poor - the cynic in me wonders if this is a deliberate ploy to stimulate sales of CD recorders and other more "hi-tech" gadgetry. Sony TCM-200DV Dictaphone

Advantages: Takes regular sized audio cassettes, double-time recording, inexpensive model
Disadvantages: Needs to be used close to sound-source, a bit bulky for some tastes

...I always wanted a dictaphone as a child. Largely, I admit, for slightly dubious reasons (i.e. I wanted to plant it in my big sister's bedroom and find out if she was talking about me.) Many years on, as a student, I finally received one as a birthday gift so that I could record important lectures. This certainly did come in handy during those classes that, however hard I tried to stay alert, had me head down and drooling on the desk within minutes. The Sony TCM-200DV Cassette-Corder (or 'dictaphone' to you and me) is a fairly basic model compared to some products on the market - but it does what it says on the tin and it does it to a perfectly acceptable standard. The machine is silver (with a charcoal grey back panel and battery compartment) and weighs in at 171g - it's roughly the same size as a cassette-playing personal stereo...

Radio 1's Live Lounge C.D! Worth the wait?

Advantages: Fun covers you perhaps wouldn't expect.
Disadvantages: I can't think of any

Along with these covers there are brilliant live versions of the artist's own songs, Basment Jaxx' chilled out Romeo, Queen's of The Stoneage do a fantastic acoustic version of no-one knows with brilliant cockiness during 'the hard part'. A simply wonderful C.D. to own which many Radio 1 listeners snapped up as soon as it hit the stores. It also has a personal feel to it, like you're in the room with the artists, sharing their jokes and giggling along with them. If you like popular music this is definately a CD for your christmas lists. good, cheap CD/MD recorder

...The Hitachi RMD 100 neatly combines a CD player and an MD recorder into a single hifi seperate. I bought it principly because I wanted an easy way of recording my MDs, and in this function it has been marvelous. I have also found that the sound quality is perhaps unsurprisingly much better than using a portable MD recorder plugged into your amp. Whilst the RMD 100 is not a top of the range model, the whole idea of mixing together CD and MD players is to be compact and functional for people just starting to build up a hifi system, or with limited amounts of cash to do so. If you fit into these categories then you can't go far wrong. Recording MDs is incredible easy, just two buttons to touch; you can enter the track names as it records, and of course you have all the usual functions of MD recorders - move, erase, link tracks, etc. You can...

(They also fitted it for me which was pretty good.) ...very surprised to hear the sound coming out of both ears!!!! People thinking that it could therefore be used as a Walkman should be wary; the sound quality is not as good and I only listen to spoken word on it. The VOR slide switch is also on the top, featuring OFF/LOW/HIGH options. The built-in speaker is an obvious feature, situated at the front. It has a 'Clear Voice' noise reduction. It's fine for spoken word but only has 0.2 Watt as power. If you listen to things like Radio Plays or Audio books, this is fine if you're in a quiet room and the player is relatively near. The cassette recorder is mechanical and there's no button to press to open the tape compartment. This suites me and isn't a problem. The buttons have a slight plasticy feel to them but the machine is robust enough, surviving frequent trips to work in rucksack...
