...My first and most helpful piece of advice is that, with so much competition in the market place, take time to shop around! When looking for advice on the net the prices you see could well be recommended retail prices but you should be able to find better prices if you look around. If you're not looking for the fastest drive it may be worth considering some manufacturers earlier models. An 8 x 4 x 24 will still do everything, just a little slower. If you intend doing 'on the fly' copies (that's moving data directly from a CD-ROM to your CD-RW) then make sure your CD-ROM drive is fast enough. For example my source drive is fifty percent faster than the destination drive. Some of the ultra fast CD-ROMS have a habit of only coming up to full speed when you start reading. To be honest I have only written about a few dozen CDs over this period, but hopefully this may be useful to the ardent ?burner? as well as the novice for which this opinion was intended for to reduce the number of wasted CDs they make. ?For the complete novice: Well burning CDs is not as simple as saving to a floppy disk say. There are 2 forms of media, CD-R and CD-RW, with a CD-R you have 650 or 700 megs of storage, you can save data to it, but you cannot edit it, once you have written to it once, you can add to it, but it will be saved under another ?session?, with A CD-RW, you can keep adding like with CD-Rs, but the added benefit is that you can erase the whole CD and start all over again...

Advantages: CD recording drives are fairly inexpensive and provide a very fast and easy way to permanently store the contents of your hard drive or CD-ROMs.
Disadvantages: Some drives will crap out after a short time. You cannot re-record CD-R discs. There are a few limitations, but otherwise it's a great system.
