...there (even staff working for nonCDG airlines eg. a BA checkin person) to be rude, unhelpful and extremely band-mannered. On explaining my confusion with not knowing which desk 54 to go to, I was greeted with exasperation and shouted at.
There is also a bizarre system (never seen this before) where you have to go through security with all your luggage (on a trolley fully loaded queueing around those ropes and posts) before checking in, which is a horrendous bottleneck.
I have found the terminals to be filthy and sometimes even smelly!
The best aspect of this airport is the shuttle bus which takes you straight to the train station for connections. It's very efficient (as long as you can find it in the first place) and announcements are in several languages. In addition, the RER connection to Paris is frequent and reliable.
I...
Advantages: Great transport links Disadvantages: Poor facilities in terminals
...I have been considering writing a review of Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) for some time but have refrained; worried that it may be biased by factors outside of the airports hands. However, having had an 'unforgettable' trip through the airport on a day trip a couple of weeks ago, I felt it was time to put down my opinions!
CDG is one of a group of airports around the capital city of France, along with Orly, Le Bourget and Beavaus, but is the most likely point of origin for travellers from the UK. It was opened in 1972 as Le Bourget could not cope with the demands of modern aviation and has quickly become one of the busiest and most diverse airports in the world.
I first visited the airport a couple of years ago when my girlfriend and I decided to visit the city for a few days holiday. We were flying from London Heathrow...
Advantages: Good connections to many destinations Disadvantages: Too difficult to navigate, not suitable for disabled, badly signposted, filthy toilets.
...Paris CDG is honestly the WORST airport I have ever visited. Getting around is a nightmare, security takes too long, the signage is bad, facilities are poor, prices are expensive and the staff surly and unhelpful.
I have transferred on and off flights via Paris CDG many times whilst flying to and from the USA from Scotland. Here is a typical experience:
We arrive by plane from Edinburgh and are taken by bus to the terminal. We then stand in a huge queue on a stairwell waiting for a bus to another terminal. Nearby TV screens don't appear to be working so nobody is sure which terminal they need. My husband asks a member of the Air France staff who is standing around nearby with a walkie-talkie. She shrugs and says something rapidly in French which we don't understand.
After 25 minutes the bus arrives but it is still not clear...
Advantages: Planes can land there. Planes can leave again. Disadvantages: Total chaos trying to navigate the airport. The moving walkways are a real danger to your health. Lack of information. Not enough multi-language speakers working there. The place is in need of some real modernising. The check-in desks need some real
...Having never been in Charles de Gaulle airport before & expecting it to be like most other airports, my family & I looked forward to our new experience.
We flew from Belfast International Airport ? Aldergrove, to London Heathrow & then transferred to our flight to Charles de Gaulle. Our flights with British Midlands International were all on time & rather uneventful, which was nice & we arrived at Charles de Gaulle on time. Things were looking good & we were looking forward to getting a taxi to our hotel.
(I had visited the CDG Airport website to familiarise myself with the layout, which would speed up our journey to the hotel once we located our luggage. The website was great & I was pretty confident that I could navigate the airport easily! .. Once there, things can quickly change!)
Once the BMI flight landed & we...
Advantages: Plays DVD, DVD-R, MP3, Kodak picture disc AND KARAOKE CDG's Disadvantages: only comes with one microphone, component cable not supplied
...Where to begin..well, my girlfriend and i decided to hold a party for my 27th birthday and we thought " Hey lets get a Karaoke machine " so, on to google to search for one, loads of results so lets narrow it down. " CDG player " (CDG or CD+G = Compact Disc + Graphics) still loads of results " Right, we've only got a budget of about £50 " Jackpot. Goodmans GDVD200CDGM from Argos for £49.99p. After getting it home and ripping it from it's packaging we realised our mistake, only one microphone, but not to worry a quick trip back to Argos and we got one for under £10. So, we try to hook it up, it comes supplied with a scart cable but i wanted it to go through my surround sound system and fortunately the player supports 2 channel dolby so i can use a component cable ( thats the one with a red, white and yellow plug on each end ). It comes...
Advantages: Horrible place - none. Disadvantages: Smoker's paradise
.... However, smoking is a right and the French exercise it where they please. The 'espace fumeur' downstairs simply has a higher concentration of smokers than the rest of the "non-smoking" part.
Food was highly priced. 20FF for 500ml Pepsi. 13.50FF for a plastic cup of coffee, 26FF for a slice of pizza in terminal F.
Navigation (as pointed out by someone else) is difficult. A bus runs around the outside of the terminal to transfer between terminals. They are however readily connected on foot, but you need to pass out of passport control and back through security to transfer on foot.
Avoid CDG & CDG2 if at all possible, that is, unless you smoke....
Advantages: Can get to just about anywhere from here. Loads of shops. Disadvantages: Big, busy and looking a little dated
...I have read a few of the previous ops about this Airport and I feel they are a little harsh. Yes the airport is unfeasibly large - it's really like a town - and yes, it's busy, but I don't agree that it's difficult to find your way around there. AS LONG AS YOU PAY ATTENTION AND HAVE A REASONABLY IDEA OF WHERE YOU WANT TO GET TO.
We experienced Charles de Gaulle in Oct 2002. We are a family of 5 and had flown into CDG from Luton and we were taking the TGV train out of CDG to Poitiers to visit my parents. As I had only been to this airport as a child before, I was a little apprehensive about guiding my 'don't speak a word of French' partner and our 3 children aged 10, 8 and 1 1/2 round one of the world's busiest airports. I have a working knowledge of French, but felt that I would feel better if I had some kind of idea what CDG was...
Advantages: Erm....it's in Paris? Disadvantages: Just a chaotic mess - and unfriendly check-in staff
...Nightmares are made of this. I had the dubious pleasure of going through Paris Charles de Gaulle twice and I hope never to have to repeat the experience. I travelled from Munich to CDG, got off the plane and looked for somewhere to change my money to francs. Found one ATM machine with a queue of about 20 people. I decided to walk on further to see if there was a Bureau de Change with a smaller queue. It too had a long queue, and just one teller. Then trying to find the bus to the train station was also a lengthy experience.
On the return leg, my friend and I arrived in CDG, thankfully with about an hour and a half to spare. We were travelling Lufthansa but there were NO signs up telling us in which direction any particular check-in desk was!! Unbelievable! So, we just had to wander along until we chanced upon it. We headed...
