FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Salem Witch Trials: First Hand
Advantages: Historical, Way its written, Characters, etc
Disadvantages: If you don't like history
....
The book is written in diary form by Mary, and can get slightly confusing at times, because the book is meant to make you think as on the surface it has 3 authors. There is Mary, the fictional character who writes a diary. Then there is Alison Ellman who apparently found the diary and made it into a book, at the start of the book there is a short message from Alison Ellman saying that she is looking for more information on Mary. Finally, the most obvious is that Celia Rees is on the front cover.
The diary entries are very frank and honest, Mary is very open and really engages with the reader. We find so much, and it is not just her view, we hear what has happened to other people as well as the actual story. Her opinions do make it better though. There was excellent description, and you could really picture the life she was talking about in...

Review of Witch Child - Celia Rees
|
The Sorceress Is Not Quite As Spellbinding This Time
Advantages: Follows on with Mary's fascinating story, informative, thought provoking and interesting
Disadvantages: Agnes seemed a weak character, lacked some of the magic of the first book
...I recently read a book which blew me away. Witch Child by Celia Rees tells the story of 14 year old Mary, whose only relative, her Grandmother has been hanged for witchcraft in 17th century England. The book, told entirely in diary form tells her story of escape on board a ship full of Puritans crossing the Atlantic, straight to Salem, onto Beulah, and ends with her fleeing the settlement she has made a home within, accused herself now of witchcraft and fearful for her life.
Witch Child is a fictional diary, told from Mary, apart from small fore and after words from a woman called Alison Ellman, who explains that the manuscript was found in a quilt 300 years old, and at the end of the book appeals for information on Mary and the families named within the book. This did have me wondering if the book was based on a true story, however I...

Review of The Sorceress - Celia Rees
|
A Witches Story, 350 years ago, has relevance today.
Advantages: Captivating, educational, just brilliant.
Disadvantages: It ended.
...with small fore and afterwords, from a woman named Alison Ellman. These suggest that the manuscript was found in a quilt, 300 years after it was written and asks for information from any one who knows anything of the families listed. This made me wonder whether the book was actually based on fact. A bit of research shows that it is fiction. The author, Celia Rees studied American History at university, and also at the same time read a book on Matthew Hopkins, witch finder general during the English civil war and was inspired to write a book about a girl who travelled between the two worlds of the Puritan pilgrims and native Americans.
There is a sequel to Witch Child, titled The sorceress which I am about to seek out. Celia Rees has also written other historical fiction books aimed at the teenage market which received rave reviews. Although...

FREE DVDS
Advantages: up to date dvds, four weeks free hire with 3 dvds at a time,
Disadvantages: see review
...My recent quest for FREE DVD hire I visited and many DVD web sites that offered a free trial. Now call me tight (no that wasn?t an invite), but I like bargains and freebies and am not ashamed to say so.
My quest took me to enough sites to hire DVDs for about four months so far (with plenty to come too). My latest free DVD site also happens to be the best I have tried for several reasons (see rest of op); the site in question is Blockbuster.co.uk.
Other sites that I have had free rentals from and then cancelled have all been similar, two weeks free trial with two DVD?s per time ? which in effect gives you about four free DVD?s. With Blockbuster?s things are different slightly ? which add a great deal of benefit to us the customer. Firstly, you get FOUR whole weeks free rental, which equates to at double the length of time most...

DVDs, DIVX, and looks fantastic.
Advantages: DVDs, DIVX, and looks fantastic.
Disadvantages: none
...Before I bought this DVD player Id never really owned a DVD player before. I had however had and still do have a ps2 on which I used to play my DVDs.
I never really went and still don’t go on this so much so I was going to sell it and buy a DVD player.
In the end I decided to just keep the ps2 and to get a cheaper DVD player than I was looking for in the first place.
The main reason why I wanted a new DVD instead of the one in the ps2 was so I could play divx format DVDs on it. The DVD player in a ps2 doesn’t recognise this format and scene as I have several divx movies already on disk and on my laptop to put onto disk then I wanted a DVD player that would recognise and play this format.
Another plus to this format is that it saves space on disks as it compresses movies into smaller file sizes without compromising...

DVDs for a fixed monthly fee...
Advantages: Simple, easy to use, quick delivery, good customer service
Disadvantages: May not have all the titles you are after
...I was using one of those sites that offer you points or a few cents for trying out free offers (don't recall which one exactly, may have been 'IPoints'...) and it had Lovefilm's FREE two week trial.
I signed up free for the minimal membership which allows you to keep one DVD at a time for as long as you want (with no late fees!) and although I had to give my credit card information, the agreement states that you will not be charged anything if you cancel within the two week period..
The membership ranges from £9 to £15 per month now; I do not recall how much it cost mid last year to be honest.. The other memberships get you 2 and 3 DVDs at a go.
I added the films I was interested in to some sort of 'wishlist'. The idea is that they send you one DVD, you keep it for as long as you want, then they send you the next one on your list...
