Worlds Collide
Review of Worlds Collide (Deluxe Edition/+DVD) - Apocalyptica by  Jeeves42

Advantages: Alters original sound and still remains great throughout
Disadvantages: None

...was that the box is a rather nice shade of purple, which is a pleasant change, since most of the CD's I buy have very dark colours on their boxes, so can be difficult to find. There is a picture of a cello on the front, surprisingly enough, with a face and wings. Above this is the word "Apocalyptica" and below the words "Worlds Collide" which are all in silver, including the picture. Upon opening the box, which folds out into three sections, you are greeted with a book with lyrics, a CD and bonus DVD. On the back of the box is a list of the songs on the CD and features on the DVD. These are as follows: CD 1. Worlds Collide- Great start to the album. For about the first minute, they stick to their trademark cellos, then drums come into the song, completely altering their sound. 5/5 2. Grace- Tense drumming layered with melodic cellos, makes... Apocalyptica- Masters in their own right?
Review of Apocalyptica - The Life Burns Tour DVD by  Azran

Advantages: Fantastic, frenetic, creative, unique
Disadvantages: none, stands up to repeat viewings and is in all ways perfect!

...Apocalyptica are always going to be compared to Mettalica. Their name isn't a coincidence. this quartet of Classically trained musicians cut their names into the metal history books with their interpretations of Mettallica classics. This is no mere covers band however, here all "traditional" instruments from the metal spectrum go out the window, replaced instead with 4 Cellos (complemented live by an incredible session drummer). Vocals are gone as well, the haunting string work at times though tempting the listener into creating lyrics. This Live DVD is an excellent package. Featuring a two hour, twenty song, live concert (recorded in Germany). Both the classic 'Tallica tunes the band became famous for are featured, as well as their own, more classical inspired output. (and the last track is the well known "Hall of the Mountain King", 5... Read review

Nupen's Wasted Opportunity
Review of Jacqueline Du Pre - Remembering Jacqueline Du Pre DVD by  zerbine28

Advantages: Shows joyful side of tragic Du Pré; invaluable performances; entertaining spots.
Disadvantages: Too short, unfocused, worshipful; expensive for 1 hour film.

...and surprise. Backstage just before a performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1969, the camera catches five young musicians (whose powerhouse combined talent could easily launch a spaceship) all horsing around--they exchange instruments and Du Pré plays a little violin 'cello-style--with hilarious results. Du Pré is joined here by Barenboim, Pinchas Zukerman and Itzhak Perlman. Shortly afterwards, the film shows them onstage, performing Schubert's Quintet (aka 'The Trout'). Rehearsing duos with her beloved 'cello teacher, William Pleeth, Du Pré exudes a natural joyfulness in her playing. That they shared a mutual admiration and warm friendship is in abundant evidence. Pleeth reminisces about his interesting first meetings with the teen cellist. He also recalls how she played from memory a couple of new, difficult pieces after studying them... Read review

The Violoncello
Review of Cello by  heydiddle

Advantages: fun, social opportunity, stimulating, rewarding
Disadvantages: big, difficult, not suited to the tone deaf

...the age of 8, I took Associated Board exams 2,3,5,6 and 8 and I have taught the cello since passing grade 8 in 1994 and still practice regularly. I have taken on pupils of different ages and abilities including a child with special needs who loves his cello lessons. It has also inspired me to learn more instruments myself such as the bassoon and clarinet. Best cello recording has to be J. Du Pre with the Elgar cello concerto - timeless! I have two cello's one is called Charlie and the other is Pablo, although I don't have a favourite, Pablo is used more for public performance as he has a brighter sound. Cellos range from around £500 to £K's so if the bank balance is suffering this may not be the right instrument for you, yet. Strings can be expensive (for decent ones) but most city libraries will have an abundance of cello music available so... Read review

Cheap no nonsense dvd recorder
Review of Cello DR 810 by  gazman1511

Advantages: Easy set up and cheap
Disadvantages: No hard drive and poor quality remote control

...I'd have to rate this product as good for those who want a cheap and simple to use DVD recorder (mine was under £70). Although it doesn't have a hard drive for recording programmes there are options to record for 120, 240 or 360 minutes on DVD depending on the length of program you wish to record. Personally, as a regular TV watcher I don't really see any difference in the quality of sound and picture whether using the 120 minute or 360 minute standard long play option. It is also possible to record a number of separate programs to the same DVD (for example, if recording on the standard long play option, twelve separate 30 minute episodes of Only Fools and Horses can be recorded onto one DVD.) Set up is extremely easy and all you need is a blank dvd to start recording. Once a program has been viewed and you want to record again... Read review

Discover ELO
Review of Discovery - ELO by  Newfloridian

Advantages: Brilliant rock classical sounds, great songs
Disadvantages: None

...ballad, the vocal range and harmonies. ‘Discovery’ has some great songs with good lyrics, beautiful melodies and superb arrangements. All compositions were by Jeff Lynne. The songs are (with my own rating out of five): Shine A Little Love **** Quiet, ethereal tinkling sounds usher in the driving upbeat of this opening number. There are good examples of Lynne and Groucutt in vocal harmony together. The lush strings and pounding bass and cellos are also in evidence. On the DVD the band are arranged across a barren landscape. It’s interesting to be reminded of the late 70s hair and dress styles. Evident are also the white cellos and blue violin. Confusion ***** A glorious romantic melancholic ballad with a great tune. There are full orchestral sounds in the choruses and gentle pizzicato strings accompanying in the verses. Beautiful – one... LOTS OF USES, NOT SO EASY TO USE
Review of Cello TP-1510 F by  ShellyQ1975

Advantages: Takes up less space, Value, Style, Use it with everything
Disadvantages: Difficult to operate, cables get in the way a bit.

...I had wanted to upgrade my small TV in the Bedroom for a while now, and with a wide range available it took some time to get the type we wanted for the price we could afford. After all we have just had Christmas, and didn't have a lot of money to splash out. We had been to Curry's but hadn't really seen the right one for us, so we headed off to Comet. They had similar tv's to Curry's but a few new ones. We wanted a Digital TV, with a built-in DVD Player, and the screen size had to be about 15", not too much bigger, as we wanted to save space (Hence the built-in DVD player and Freeview.) We came across the Cello TP-1510F, and for the price felt that it had everything we needed. We had never heard of the Brand Cello before, but felt it was worth the risk. After all, someones got to buy them. The Cello TP-1510F was a 15" Wide Screen LCD... Read review

Wish I Was There......
Review of David Gilmour - In Concert DVD by  n13roy

Advantages: Brilliant Songs played Solo.....sort of...
Disadvantages: No Flying Pigs...

...Itself..... So, we see David Gilmour strumming a few practice chords, and then playing the unmistakeable introduction to Shine on you Crazy Diamond, a tune just about all Pink Floyd fans will know well, and have in their collection, its also a very moody piece of music too, played like this, it also shows how versatile Gilmour is as a musician as he skillfully moves from one chord sequence to another with ease, when the vocals do come in we are in full flow of the song and its so refreshing to hear it played like this, and it sets the mood for the whole DVD really, all very laid back, atmospheric and beautifully played...No special effects needed here.........Not a Flying Pig in Sight..... So I shall now brielfy review the rest of the songs on the DVD. Terrapin..... is next, which is a very old Syd Barrett song, and once again Gilmour does... Read review

Mine has grown with me
Review of Cello by  LonelyBeauty

Advantages: I love it
Disadvantages: size and cost of lessons music extra

...I remember to this day how I took up the 'cello, I was at a junior school in Staffordshire and I was asked if I wanted to take up the 'cello, this seemed like an excellent idea to a 6 year old, my sister played the violin so why not out do her!! For anyone who doesn't know what a 'cello is I am sickened by you but still I will explain; it is the second largest member of the string family, often described as a big violin. To me it is a gorgeous wooden instrument, it has 4 strings (A, D, G and C) and is played with a bow (long stick with horse hair attached at both ends, used for sword fighting with in the early days of playing) In the early days it was a bit of a pain, as a six year old I had to get my mum to move it everywhere for me, (fear of breaking and due to the size) I hated playing it, practise would end with hours of rows... Crime doesn't pay
Review of Take The Money And Run DVD by  PaulL_UK

Advantages: One of Woody's early funny movies!
Disadvantages: The name Woody Allen may be enough to put many off

...Take the Money and Run, released in 1969 was Woody Allen's first film as writer, director and star. It is also probably the first of Woody's films that I ever saw back when I was about 17 (ten years or so ago). The film concerns itself with the story of Virgil Starkwell (Woody Allen) an incredibly inept criminal. It begins with a pre-credit sequence in documentary style (perhaps a slight nod towards Citizen Kane?) with voice over, charting his growth from a young child (complete with ginger hair and those trademark glasses) to adulthood and finally incarceration for a failed armed robbery with a gun shaped cigarette lighter. Like the rest of the film this section is filled with many visual jokes, such as the repeated smashing of his glasses and him attempting to play cello in a marching band. Interviews with people and stock black... Read review
