Sheffield's Largest Cemetery
Advantages: Haven For Wildlife, Tranquil, Lots Of History
Disadvantages: Some May Consider A Little Bit Morbid
...The City Road Cemetery in Sheffield may seem like an odd place to call an attraction but as the largest of the City?s Public Cemeteries it offers a vast area of open, recreation land, within an otherwise Urban area.
This Cemetery first opened in 1881 and it was originally known as Intake Cemetery since City Road, where it is located, was at that time known as Intake Road. Just to confuse things slightly there is now a different, much smaller Cemetery called Intake Cemetery, which can be found about a mile further out from the City Centre.
Initially the Cemetery was used only for Burials, but on the 24th April 1905 the first Cremation take place here, at the newly completed Crematorium. As the first Crematorium to be built in the City this created a lot of interest and those remembering the deceased did not only attend it, it was...

Highgate Cemetery - a different afternoon out
Advantages: Tranquility, atmosphere
Disadvantages: No facilities
...Most people think it strange when I say that Highgate Cemetery is an afternoon out worth doing. After all it is just a graveyard isn't it?!
The cemetery was opened in 1839 and currently has over 150,000 people buried in over 50,000 graves. It is divided into two parts - the older West Cemetery and the newer East cemetery. In its Victorian heyday up to 29 gardeners were employed to keep the grounds neat. However, as it filled up and the money dried up the cemetery became overgrown and in disrepair. In the 1970s the Friends of Highgate Cemetery became involved and as volunteers, preserved the cemetery and opened it for visitors. Their policy is not one of restoration but of preservation and conservation or, as my guide told me, "managed neglect"!
Tours run during the week at 2pm and at weekends on the hour from 10-4pm in...

House By The Cemetery, Night Behind A Cushion
Advantages: A welcome entry to the world of Italian Horror.
Disadvantages: Poor Dubbing.
...The House By The Cemetery or Quella villa accanto al cimitero
Back in the early 1990's I stayed up to watch Mariella Frostrop's movie review programme. In this episode she reviewed the release of both this and The Burning; I immediately went out the following day and purchased House by the cemetery. I had never even heard of Lucio Fulci nor had I heard of any of his films.
THE MOVIE
-----------------
Dr. Norman Boyle has to move to a small New England town from New York to carry out some important research. In one of the opening scenes a scary child called Bob whilst looking at a picture of a house says "Mommy why is that girl talking to me" Of course there is no girl in the picture, well none that the boys mother Lucy can see. In typical Lucio Fulci style the house in the picture just happens to be the house they end up moving...

The funereal splendour of Victorian London
Advantages: Peaceful and scenic location, chock full of beauty and social history!
Disadvantages: Not the easiest place to get to, surrounding area a little run down
...London lying in state
While a cemetery might not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a fun day out, London's historic cemeteries are full of beauty, steeped in history and ripe for re-discovery. As well as these very good reasons for paying a visit to your local necropolis, they're typically very peaceful, chock full of interesting architecture and most of the residents are long dead, so there's little risk of appearing to be an insensitive tourist interrupting the solemnity of any grieving families.
Nunhead Cemetery (originally 'All Saints'') first opened in 1840 as part of the ongoing need for an expansion of London's burial grounds. It was originally ran by a private company and continued to be used throughout both the first and second World Wars, suffering damage from Luftwaffe bombs during the London blitz...

Resting Place of the Rich and Famous
Advantages: Beautiful and Interesting
Disadvantages: Lots of walking involved
...Unlike the British way, cemeteries in France are places where life is celebrated rather than places of mourning as such. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Père Lachaise cemetery located in the 20th arrondisment, in Paris. This cemetery is thought to be the most visited cemetery in the world and with good reason - it is now the residence of some of the world's most famous politicians, inventors, thinkers and icons. In fact, almost 300,000 bodies have been laid to rest at Père Lachaise and the list reads like a 'who's who' of French people and those with links to the city of Paris.
It was first established by Napoleon at the start of the 19th Century when cemeteries were banned from the centre of the city due to health and safety hazards. It was originally an unpopular choice compared to its counterparts on the other sides...

Come once again to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books
Advantages: Great once it gets going
Disadvantages: Takes too long to get going
...A couple of years ago I was lent a copy of Carlos Ruiz Zafon's Shadow of the Wind. Taking up the advice, I read it, and was immediately drawn into the author's portrayal of Barcelona across the 20th Century, as his lead character pursued a literary quest among the dark and sinister streets, and discovered the mysterious Cemetery of Forgotten Books.
Entranced, it was with bated breath that I awaited the translation of the prequel, The Angel's Game, and my wife treated me to it as a a birthday present earlier this year. I have recently finished reading it, and whereas Shadow of the Wind was a slow and relaxing book to read, Angels' Game took ages to get going and was more a laborious effort that ended up taking a lot longer than it should have done.
We start off being taken on a scene setting few chapters where Zafon introduces us to...

An alive cemetery
Advantages: Excellent story, for all ages
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too philisophical for anyone under 9
...I brought this book after seeing the stage production of it, which I thought seemed the wrong order in which to do things.
The basic plot is there?s a boy called John Maxwell, who?s 12 years old. He?s a normal guy, except that when he goes down to the local cemetery, he can see all the dead, out of their coffins wondering about. He is the only one who can do this.
And already you?re thinking what a cheesy book this sounds, but it seriously is a good one. He has many interesting conversations with the dead, as it turns out, the reason they are in the cemetery is because they are waiting for judgement day, though they don?t say it in so many words. They seem to sort of know what they?re waiting for but then again they don?t. The dead want to have a look at life after seeing a newspaper, and venture out into the street, much to...

Time To Pull That Sofa Out!
Advantages: Scary, disturbing, thought provoking
Disadvantages: Bad dubbing and poor acting
...There are few movies that have been affected quite as badly as a result of the UK?s video nasty furore than The House By The Cemetery. In 1984 when certification kicked in and movies started to become banned when our government was trying to yurn us into a nanny state House By The Cemetery was one of the first to go. Ironically in 1993 after nearly ten years in the wilderness it was one of the first of the former video nasties to get a release, then by the now defunct S. Gold & Sons sub label Vipco (S. Gold & Sons are also now defunct but were former pioneers in the home entertainment industry). While it secured its release there was a considerable amount of time edited from the movie. As DVD took off and Vipco planned a DVD release of the movie they then presented it before the BBFC (British Board Of Film Classification) again where...

Another must see in Washington
Advantages: Historical, interesting, moving
Disadvantages: None
...Another stop on my tour of Washington DC beckons! This time it is the turn of Arlington National Cemetery. This is America's national cemetery for military personnel and I think it is another one of those places which is a must see for anyone visiting DC.
GETTING THERE:
The cemetery is based just outside DC itself, on the other side of the Potomac River. There is plenty of public transportation which goes there, including the metro (get off at Arlington National Cemetery - I know - logical for America!!). There is also a car park, which seemed to have plenty of parking. The parking costs $1.75 for the first 3 hours and $2 per hour after that which is reasonable when you think of how much parking costs over here. We left our car in the car park and then picked up a tour for the rest of DC from the cemetery which is a good idea...

A peaceful reminder of a turbulent past
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...When you visit Iran there's one thing you can't fail to spot - it is a country with a fixation on death and martyrdom; a country where no matter where you go, you are never very far from reminders of the Iran-Iraq war - or as the Iranians call it, 'the Imposed War'. The war ran for just short of eight years - from September 1980 to August 1988 and is recognised as the longest 'conventional' war of the 20th Century. Nearly twenty years after it ended, the memories are still very fresh in Iran.
I'll admit I was a little taken aback after an overnight flight to Tehran that the 'highlights' of day one were to be a tad fixated on death and destruction - a trip firstly to the tomb of Ayatollah Khomeini before we popped round the corner to the Behesht-e-Zahra Cemetery to see the memorials to the martyrs of the Iran-Iraq war as well as those...
