Healthy Cereal Bars???
Advantages: Less than 70 calories
Disadvantages: No good if you're lactose/gluten/soya intolerant
...Whilst perusing the aisles in Asda at weekend I came across these Alpen Light cereal bars on a "2 boxes for £2.50" special offer (they usually retail at around £1.80 per box) so purely for the benefit of Ciao members I popped a couple of boxes in my trolley and skipped off to the checkout. (I would normally buy Special K bars.)

My quest for a cereal bar...
Advantages: Tastes nice
Disadvantages: Quite high fat, not too filling
...I've recently found myself in the routine of buying a chocolate bar when I take the kids to school to eat in front of the computer when I get home, convincing myself it was ok as I don't eat breakfast. Not the healthiest option I know, so I've set myself a challenge to find a tasty but 'better for me' alternative to a Whole Nut. :o(
This morning I've decided to go for an Alpen bar. A strawberry Alpen bar. Upon choosing this tasty looking bar I realise my challenge may well last just a day as in our local shop there are rows and rows of chocolate bars and crisps and the grand total of 3 different cereal bars! Lets just hope this one happens to be the stuff of my dreams....
oOoOo THE WRAPPER oOoOo
This bar comes in a red and blue foil wrapper and the front just tells you this is an Alpen product and the flavour I've gone...

Cereal bars at their finest!
Advantages: delicious, cheap, healthy
Disadvantages: only in Asda
...I adore cereal and cereal bars, it's almost impossible not to. Although I usually prefer the 'chewy' kind, now and again I like the softer, oaty bars. Usually, I'd head for the brands with Kellogg's Nutri-Grain, but when I discovered Asda's own version, Fruit & Grain. They offer a selection of delicious flavours, one of the most appealing being the Apple and Cinnamon.
Inside the cardboard box, you'll find eight individually wrapped cereal bars in a green wrapper with white writing. Okay, so it doesn't look too appealing yet, but its what's inside that counts! Ripping into the wrapper, the first thing you'll notice is how much it takes over your sense of smell. The cereal bar has a very distinctive cinnamon scent to it, not too surprisingly. Its not too strong that it becomes sickening though, which is always good.
When you remove...

Alpen cereal bars with yogurt
Advantages: Great taste, individually wrapped, smell nice
Disadvantages: none that I've found
...I unfortunately like my bed a little too much to get up early enough for breakfast in the morning. But I found a great alternative.
Alpen cereal bars. I tried the Strawberry and Yogurt variety, which came in a box of 6, for the grand price of £1 at Asda. Each bar is individually wrapped in foil (29g) so is great for taking on the move (such as driving into work). They also come in 5 other flavours: fruit and nut; raspberry and yogurt; fruit and nut with chocolate; apple, blackberry and yogurt and Cranberry and Almond with milk chocolate.
INGREDIENTS
The ingredients for the strawberry and yogurt bars are as follows: cereals, glucose syrup, sugar, vegetable oil, fruit juice concentrate, strawberry, milk lactose, milk yogurt powder, dried apple pieces, dextrose, wheat gluten, freeze dried strawberry, malted barley extract, salt...

Wholesome, tasty cereal bar
Advantages: Great taste, and low fat
Disadvantages: price
...I like cereal bars, probably more than biscuits and I always make sure we have some in the house for when I feel a little peckish. I've always preferred the sultana and nut varieties to chocolate or berry flavoured choices but when my favourites where out of stock recently I decided to give these little gems a try. I've had Seeds of Change cereal bars before and enjoyed them, but you don't seem to get the sultana and hazelnut ones anymore so I thought I would try the chocolate ones.
Seeds of Change
Seeds of Change make a range of Organic Foods from cereal bars to sauces, established in 1989 they had a revolutionary mission: 'To make organically grown seeds available to gardeners and farmers, while preserving countless heirloom seed varieties in danger of being lost to the "advances" of modern industrial agriculture.'

Yummy chewy cereal bar!
Advantages: tasty
Disadvantages: none!
...I saw these cereal bars n the aisle of the supermarket and I really fancied giving a healthy snack a go which wasn't stuffed full of unnatural sweetners.
I have now become a big fan of tehse cereal bars and they certainly don't last very long in my house so i thought i had better review them now before there are none left for me to look at the ingredients etc!
The cereal bars come in boxes of 6 and are individually wrapped in plastic wrappers. The wrappers are red and white with a see-through window so you can see the cereal bar inside so you can see exactly what you're going to be eating.
The cereal bar is 30g which is just the right size for a snack although, if you're like me, you'll hacve finished it and still wanting more because they're so yummy! The flavoir- cranberry and apple is really nice and sweet but the flavours...

Alpen strawberry and yoghurt cereal bars.
Advantages: Very tasty, Smells nice, Lovely product!
Disadvantages: None that I can see !
...Last week I started on a diet and exercise routine. I was at the end of my first day when the longing for chocolate set in. I wandered downstairs and scoured the cupboards searching for a healthier alternative.
Fortunately, my dad had been to Morrisons the day before and (him loving special offers) he bought about 20 half price packs of cereal bars. I immediately looked through for the type that appealed to me most.
I eventually spotted these Alpen bars. In a box your get six 29g bars and the variety I had chosen was strawberry with yoghurt. The box appealed to me because it was brightly coloured and nice laid out. The box was bright peach, red and blue majorly and the red was a picture of a mountain. In front it pictured brightly coloured and sumptuous looking strawberries with lush, green leaves and also a picture of wheat...

sweet and sickly cereal bars
Advantages: erm can't think of any
Disadvantages: taste
...My oldest daughter sometimes takes a cereal bar to school for her mid morning snack. I am not necessary a fan of cereal bars as a healthy snack, as I think they have a lot of sugar in. (The school classes them as healthy). Whilst doing the supermarket shop I saw these 'Jammie Dodgers snack bar' I thought they would make a nice change as a treat, so I bought a box of 6.
I can't remember how much I paid but probably over £2.
Each cereal bar is 23g and contains 94 calories which is about average for a cereal bar. One also contains 16.2g of carbohydrate of which 7.8g of that is sugar. (just over a third of the bar). The salt content is ok it only contains a trace of sodium, all other nutrients are minimal - i.e. protein 0.7g, fibre 0.8g etc.
The bar itself has crisped rice which a lot of cereal bars have but, running through...

Fruit and Nutty about Alpen cereal bars
Advantages: Lovely texture and flavour
Disadvantages: Not the cheapest
...Alpen cereal bars do exactly what they say on the box, they are delicious, moist and chewy and paked full of fruit and nut pieces. These are great bars for popping in your bag or pocket for a quick and easy snack through the day - I usually have one to keep me going during lectures at uni, or for between dance classes to keep me going. They really are delicious, and sometimes one just isn't enough! At 110 calories and 2.8g fat per bar - they are a healthier alternative to bag of crisps or a bar of chocolate.
They come in boxes of six, and are also available individually in some shops. They come in a variety of flavours but Fruit and Nut (the only ones I have tried) are lovely! The box is blue and green in colour and have a lovely picture of one of the unwrapped bars, surrounded by the fruit nuts and grains that make up the bar...
