A calculated effort
Advantages: Loads of features, nice programming language, clear screen
Disadvantages: Comms facility doesn't work
...Graphic calculators have come a long way in recent years. I bought one of Casio's earliest efforts in the sector, the fx-7000GA (which I still have), about eight years ago, and thought it was the bee's knees. Putting it side by side with my current workhorse, the CFX-9850G, however, points up just how far things have advanced in that time. The older machine had a whopping 422 bytes(!) of RAM, for example - this one has about 60 times that....
The Casio name in itself is enough to make many people take notice. Casio have an excellent reputation for making good calculators, and I think it's entirely deserved. Their experience with school-level calcs means that their products tend to be robust and well-built, which is the case with the CFX-9850G. Everything is made of hard-wearing plastic, including the keys. At first, their slightly...

The Perfect Calculator
Advantages: Packed with useful features
Disadvantages: Are there any??
...This Casio CFX-9850G Plus calculator is a great little machine. It is stacked with features that are incredibly useful to people such as maths students.
Not only is this a cracking piece of kit, it's robust too. I've had mine for about four years now and its still working perfectly, despite being knocked about a fair bit because of its regular use.
The calculator is quite easy to use once you've messed around on it for a bit; it is easy enough to pick up and use. This is aided by the good graphical interface and the sort of 'cursor' that you move around to navigate the menus. If you are reasonably competent with technology, the controls should pose no problems at all.
Now, on to the features. As well as the bog standard things that all calculators do (addition, multiplication etc.), the ability to do matrix calculations...

If San Miguel could sing...
Advantages: Sounds good, looks good
Disadvantages: I can't use it to bat wasps
.... The TSC-136 CFX (catchy name huh?) is an electro-classical, meaning it can also be plugged into an amplifier and played very loudly and annoyingly if you want (more about that later). The top is solid spruce, and the back and sides are made of mahogany... I think it?s veneer, but it?s a very good veneer. My grampa who knows all about making things from wood said the finish is brilliant, you know it must be when you could probably use the reflection to drive a car (note: that is not a challenge!). A cutaway is provided to make the highest notes available to play, and there is a nice little rosette around the sound hole. The fretboard is rosewood and the machine heads (windy string things) are gold plated... woohoo! According to the Tanglewood site, the RRP is £549, though I had £100 off, probably due to some small marks that are here...

A great introduction to free digital TV
Advantages: Good picture, 2 scarts
Disadvantages: Old OnDigital box, so very slow
...I bought this box about 3 months ago on ebay as something cheap due to concerns about reception and the fact that the digital terrestrial market was still in the early days of regeneration following the collapse of ITV digital.
As reception was quoted as 75% of the population, I wanted to know whether I could get digital terrestrial where I live. So, I went to www.freeview.co.uk and was told that I couldn't receive Freeview at my postcode. This obviously put me off the whole idea, but then I stumbled across www.dtg.org.uk and found that I could get about half the channels so I thought I'd buy a cheap receiver and see what happened. So I bought the 9850T on ebay for £54 including postage. It arrived a few days later and I plugged it in thinking that it wouldn't be that impressive as I'd probably only get half the channels, seeing also...

Free Digital TV at a price!!
Advantages: Cheap Intro to Digital TV, Some good Variation of Channels, Includes lots of radio stations, no need for a dish to be installed.
Disadvantages: Can be weather dependant!, VERY dependant on very strong signal.
...If like me you have wondered what it would be like to view the free to air digital channels then you should definitely read this first.
ITV always advertise ITV2, the BBC advertise BBC3,4,2W and News24,CBBC and Cbeebies. I thought - mmm it would be nice to have all those through my ariel without any monthly subscriptions. I did a little research on the internet to see if the area i live in can receive digital signals. The website i used stated that my area can receive a limited signal. To check your signal first (Strongly recommended) go to http://www.freeview.co.uk/canireceivefreeview/.
I then started looking for a set-top-box and decided to go for the Nokia Mediamaster 9850 T. It was fairly cheap at £60 for a new one. The box itself is nice looking (comes in black or silver). I have a silver one which looks pretty good...

A calculator for all ages
Advantages: Does everything and more than what you could want
Disadvantages: None
...The first calculator I every purchased was for my GCSE?s and it was a few models up from this one, boosting features such as being battery and solar powered. On moving to A-levels I thought it would be worth the investment in buying a colour graphic calculator, again by Casio (model CFX 9850). I was told it would be suitable at university, and the fact it could solve equations and draw graphs had the bonus of saving time while solving mathematical problems.
When I arrived at university to do Mechanical Engineering I thought it would be the perfect tool. To my disappointment and waste of timing learning how to use and master even things such as finding the off button. University regulations said one of the only two calculators suitable to use was the Casio fx-83WA.
Like any one who wanted to comply I purchased my, not as...

You're already paying for it, so get it!
Advantages: Free with your current TV license
Disadvantages: Lacking another few great channels which may come later
...receiver, the Nokia MediaMaster 9850T (see my review of this ITV digital box) on ebay for £54 including postage. It arrived a few days later and I plugged it in thinking that it wouldn't be that impressive as I'd probably only get half the channels, seeing also as apparently I'd need a different aerial to get all of them anyway.
How wrong was the information I found on the internet. After a two minute channel scan, it came up with 54 channels found! That was all of them! Note: many of these are radio channels, there are about 30 TV channels on Freeview.
I was obviously highly deilighted with this, though I wonder why oh why are the people at the Freeview, DTG and BBC websites so negative, I could get all the channels when they said I couldn't because I'm in a poor reception area and apparently I have the wrong aerial. Surely they want...
