...I fancied going away for the weekend but didn't want to go far or spend a fortune, I didn't even want to spend £100 a night for a basic hotel so I searched for guest houses in the lake district as we don't live far from there and the countryside is lovely. I couldn't find any vacancies so I suggested a caravan to my husband, he agreed as we both think it's great for children to be outside and they love it. I search the Hoseasons website and we decided to go on Friday after school and work etc and stay until Monday as the children were off school then. We wanted a fairly basic site as we were going to take games to play at night and the netball post and maybe the swingball. After looking I came across Chapel Farm Caravan Park in Little Asby. The Hoseasons site had a caravan available for 3 nights at a cost of £165, fairly cheap...

A beautiful chapel with lots of history

Advantages: Wonderful architecture, views and a decent cup of tea!
Disadvantages: Pricey

...At the moment I am staying with Dave in Edinburgh to keep him company whilst he is currently working there. This weekend we have been out for a ride and on the way back to the house at Swanston that we are renting (review already written!) Dave decided to take me somewhere as a surprise. The place in question was Rosslyn Chapel. He knows that I love to visit churches, chapels and cathedrals in any state of repair so he was on to a winner with this place. Where is it? To get there by car you just need to take the A701 travelling south from Edinburgh and then turn left onto the B7006 and follow the signs to Roslin and the chapel. The cute little chapel on Rotherham Bridge

Advantages: Looks lovely, lots of history

...I find that there is something very cute about Chantry Bridge Chapels and if you have not yet been fortunate to see one it is difficult to explain exactly where their charm lies. Firstly, I suppose that I ought to explain just exactly what a Chantry Bridge Chapel is and more importantly I ought to tell you whereabouts you can find one, just in case by the end of this review I have stirred your curiosity just enough to try and seek one out or better still, if I have convinced you also that Chantry Bridge Chapels are indeed very cute and charming. Chantry Bridge Chapels are miniature medieval churches. During the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th centuries several of these small places of worship were built but sadly only four of them have survived into the 21st century. cracking chapel!!!

Advantages: family orientated
Disadvantages: none!

...The only dilemma i have had so far with this review is how to start it!!! If you only knew how passionate i am about this place you would understand. I will start by saying since my birth ( a few years ago!!!!), i have only missed out on three years of my beloved holiday of choice, Chapel st Leonards. Twice in my teens, when it was soooo uncool to go any where with your mum and dad, let alone leave your friends for a whole week and go to the boring seaside, and once because i gave birth to my daughter at the time we normally go and i felt fat and not really in the mood for seaside antics!!! I now,(as i'm racing towards my thirtys), go once a year with my own family (my husband adores the place as much as me, and my kids are not quite old enough for teenage tantrums!!!),and after refusing to go with my mum and dad all those years ago...

Sistine Chapel

Advantages: Gorgeous
Disadvantages: Can't spend long enough in there

...The Sistine Chapel is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to. It is said that Michelangelo spent several years lying on his back painting the frescoes which cover the ceiling and I can well believe it. It is a real shame that we cannot get close enough to the ceiling to see the mastery of his brushstrokes although the view we do get is breathtaking. I had to content myself with buying lots of postcards from the Vatican shop and a book on the Sistine Chapel when I got home as it really is something that you want to hold to you and keep. Unfortunately no one is allowed to take photographs in there and you are also restricted in how long you are permitted to stay in there. Savour it while you can ? it is a memory that will remain with you always....

Review of Vatican

A riotous explosion of carved images.

Advantages: Exquisite carvings. The apprentice pillar. Surrounding landscape.
Disadvantages: Metal cover. The cost. Large number of tourists.

The novel was of course Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code and the chapel the magnificant Rosslyn Chapel. Just in case you're one of the very few people who haven't experienced the story or you just need a bit of a recap, Rosslyn Chapel was thought to hold the holy grail; built by the Knights Templar, and to contain a six-pointed Star of David worn into the stone floor...

Gibside

Advantages: Lovely day out
Disadvantages: Some areas difficult for disabled visitors

...Another National Trust property and one which I visit quite often because this is really close to my house...about 5 minutes in the car. WHAT TO SEE... There's plenty to see and do if you enjoy country estates. There is a chapel which was built in the mid 1700s as a mausoleum for George Bowes, and this was apparantly in the Palladium style. If this means lots of pillars and something quite out of character based on where it is, and the other buildings round it, then I'll go with that. Leading from the chapel is a long wide grassy area, great for children to run about on , and this, not surprisingly is the Long walk which passes the walled Garden Green House, Gibside Hall and The Stables (these stables incorporate meeting rooms, anm can accommodate school visits). Continue along the walk and you arrive at the Column to Liberty...

Advantages: A very different kind of church building from the rest in Prague

British Rail Food Was Never Like This

Advantages: Great food, interesting service, exceptional waiter
Disadvantages: NOISY, really noisy until our lovely waiter turned the music off

.... The bill came to just a shade under £100. Starters had been £5-6, mains were in the range £9 to 12 with desserts each clocking up about another £5. Drinks on top brought us to a about £97. Not cheap for a pub meal but completely in line with expectations for this sort of 'Gastro-pub' in our part of the country. I'm fairly certain that we'll be back again soon.
