A Carpenter and his Wood

...If truth be told John Carpenter hasn't made a decent film for years but thanks to some cult video classics such as The Thing and Big Trouble In Little China his career still keeps on going. Ghosts of Mars is another attempt by Carpenter to remake Rio Bravo with a sci-fi element. It's 200 years into the future and a Martian police unit led by Lt. Melanie Ballard (Natasha Henstridge) is sent to a mining outpost to bring back a dangerous prisoner Desolation Williams (Ice Cube). However what they encounter is a deadly race of martian ghosts who inhabit the bodies of the miners. Cue hell on earth and a fight to escape with all body parts intact. ...Ghosts of Mars(or "John Carpenter's" Ghosts of Mars as he would obviously prefer it titled) is a movie which for me at least hammers home the final nail in the coffin of one of horror's most widely respected directors. This guy has effectively done nothing which could be considered even slightly above B-movie fare since the 80s and in fact, when you think about it, the movies he is still churning out these days still resemble the 80s stuff. Halloween was a great movie, The Thing was a great movie, Escape From New York was watchable but cannibalised ideas from his previous 80s movie Escape From L.A. and these are what established him as a great director - everything he has made since screams otherwise. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. There'll never be another Karen Carpenter

...I think that everyone, if they were honest, would say they like at least one Carpenters song. Even if they are rigid rock/heavy metal/rap fans, they would surely admit to thinking that Karen Carpenter had the most amazing voice ever. It's richness stood out in every song the Carpenters sang, and there will simply never be another to touch the quality in that voice. I only have one CD by the Carpenters and it's their greatest hits, but to listen to it sends me into another world. Karen's voice is so crystal clear, the songs are so catchy. Some of the songs, such as 'Goodbye to love' are said to have personal meanings behind them, and I don't know if this is true, but if so then it's really sad. Carping on about a less than classic album

...Don?t be fooled by the title. With a title like ?The Carpenters?, you could be forgiven for thinking it was a 'best of' or a 'greatest hits' package. It's neither of these. Neither was it the Carpenters' debut album, interestingly enough. "The Carpenters" is actually a very mediocre album, so I would advise anyone but the hardened fan to steer clear. It was the third album release from the brother and sister duo, Karen and Richard Carpenter. They weren?t exactly superstars by this time, in 1971, but a couple of their singles had been hits, and they were definitely gaining in popularity. The first track, ?Rainy days and Mondays? starts ever so quietly. You may wonder whether you?ve got the volume turned up at all until it gets to half a minute in.
