Charlotte Church Dream A Dream disappointment

Advantages: Her voice is sublime, and improving all the time
Disadvantages: Album full of Christmas songs does not encourage replaying

...Charlotte Church, the fourteen year old Welsh soprano with, apparently, the "voice of an angel" has released this album (as she did her previous two albums) to coincide nicely with the Christmas rush. Therefore I'm sure lots of people, like me, will have found them playing the CD over the days following Christmas. Unfortunately for those who find this stretching their Christmas stocking, the CD is full of Christmas songs and carols. Now, I might be a bit mean-spirited, but don't you just hate CDs full of Christmas songs - let's face it - the next time I'll be playing this album will be in 50 weeks from now! Still, there is an impressive songlist on the CD, 20 tracks in total, every one Christmas orientated (tedious to the extreme), and I'm afraid after listening to half of them, I had to have a break before I could listen to...

Prelude – Charlotte Church comes of age

Advantages: Beautifully Sung

...One Saturday evening towards the end of 2002, I was making a cup of coffee in the kitchen, when I heard this amazing voice coming from the TV next door. The voice belonged to a woman who was singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, and it sounded fantastic! I rushed next door to see who it was, and found that it was Charlotte Church, who was being interviewed by Michael Parkinson! This was the first song I had ever heard her sing which was not operatic or classical, and I was really impressed. Advantages: excellent arrangements/great audio quality

...his is Charlotte Church's most mature album, she sings hits from musicals a couple of classical pieces and folk pieces. I can't consider Charlotte Church a real soprano like Kathleen Battle for example. Her voice has some some technical problems but still Charlotte Church's voice is very beautiful!This album brings up some of her non-classical abilities which I think should be more explored. Tonight - An emotive opening song, from the famous musical by Leonard Bernstein, it's very strong with a lot of horns in the orchestra. Carrickfergus - A very very sweet folkloric piece about love, it's got some poppy beats along with the orchestra but it's still very beautiful, there's a videoclip for this music. Church of the Poisoned Mind?

Advantages: A few fairly decent pop songs

...I'm quite possibly the kind of person that Charlotte Church was aiming at when she decided to take a change of direction into pop music. I would never even have considered buying her "Voice of an Angel" style CDs, purely because classical and operatic style music isn't my thing. I do, however, have a liking for well crafted pop music, so I'd always be likely to give her pop debut a chance, if it seemed worth it. Church certainly seemed to have all the attributes to have a decent career in pop music. After all, she had the sports star boyfriend like Posh Spice and Cheryl from Girls Aloud. ...Charlotte Church has clocked up an excessive amount of media coverage over the last year. Sadly, none of this coverage has been about her latest album release, or a new music project she is embarking upon. It has all been about a relationship she has formed with a local Cardiff lad, who depending on the day of the week is a DJ/producer/general layabout. Why the media are so focused on rubbishing her is beyond me, and I said in my recent Daniel Bedingfield review, it infuriates me that our media love to build up new talent to the highest heights, and set expectations which are so hard to meet, and then take the greatest of pleasure watching them crash and burn. ...Well this is another of the CD's that having returned home seem to have become a fixture on my CD player. Everyone knows who Charlotte Church is, shes the little girl who sang classical/opera music discovered by Richard and Judy, but she has grown up and as this happen it was somewhat inevtiable that she would choose to aim an album at the popular music market, her vocal talent in undeniable but how well does it cross to pop music? Not because its really peculiar, but because it’s a bit like sitting in a welsh kitchen for a couple of hours and listening to some of your neighbours discuss their family trouble. Maybe it’s the whole British film thing: it’s not so very far removed from the completely possible, everyday sort of thing, unlike the complete escapism from reality offered by the bigger budget movies.
