Celebrating England
Advantages: looks cute
Disadvantages: retired
...Everybody my age had TY beanies, they were adorable! My close circle of friends and I were huge collectors and between us we have most, if not all, of them going! One of these is England the Bear.
England:
The name is pretty self explanatory. This bear represents the country England. Whether it is bought as a souvineer by a tourist in England, or by somebody whose home country is England and they are proud of that, this bear is there to represent it.
Appearance:
To look at, England from a distance seems plain, almost like a basic white bear. Indeed, his fur is white, which goes hand in hand with the whiteness of the England flag. Around his neck there is a little red, white and blue bow - the colours of the Union Jack. This alone is cute, and then on his chest you will notice a little England flag has been stitched on. This adds to...

England Cricket Team Part 1
Advantages: Side hard to beat
Disadvantages: Often wrong team selected
...ORIGINALLY WRITTEN AUGUST 2000
LIFE AS AN ENGLAND SUPPORTER
I first started watching England on TV in 1970 at the age of 8.
In those days the BBC1 commentators were Jim Laker and Richie Benaud. Peter West introduced each test session.
1970
England was due to play South Africa but this tour was cancelled due to the sports wide ban due to South Africa’s apartheid policies.
Instead England played a test series against the Rest of the World. This team was a fantastic side and comprised of players such as Eddie Barlow, Clive Lloyd, Graeme Pollock, Gary Sobers etc.
England lost the series 4-1 but it was no disgrace to lose to such a great side. My main memory is of Geoff Boycott scoring a magnificent 157 against a brilliant bowling attack.
Later in the year England toured Australia and regained the Ashes...

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in the Peak District!
Advantages: Lots of history, good history, nice location
Disadvantages: Small food portions, Soft drinks quite pricey
...There was a time when I was growing up when my family suddenly became a little bit more affluent. My Dad had worked all of his life in the Sheffield Steelworks and had been made unemployed. That was a difficult time but just when things were starting to look grim he got another job.
This job came with a Company Car and he had a good Boss. One of the perks of this job was that was that he was allowed to take his wife and kids (my brother and myself) out for a meal every week, as long as the total bill did not exceed £60. For the next couple of years my Mother never had to cook another Sunday Lunch.
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, located in the Derbyshire Town of Castleton was one of several Pubs/Restaurants where we became regulars.
Castleton is a beautiful little Town in an area of the Peak District National Park known as...

England Football Team Part 1
Advantages: Sven has improved the confidence of the players
Disadvantages: Not enough of the squad play abroad
...ORIGINALLY WRITTEN October 2000
A LIFE AS AN ENGLAND SUPPORTER
Although I cannot remember the match my parents told me that I watched the 1966 World Cup final at the age of 4.
I began watching England matches in 1970. I particularly remember a match at Wembley where England thrashed Belgium 3-1. It was a wonderful performance. Alan Ball and Geoff Hurst got the goals.
In those days the Home International Championships were played at the end of the season. England would easily see off Wales and Northern Ireland. The big game was the final match, which was against Scotland.
I think the score in 1970 was 0-0.
1970 WORLD CUP
Afterwards the World Cup in Mexico began. England was drawn in a group with Rumania, Brazil and Czechoslovakia.
The match with Rumania was a dour affair. I can remember Geoff Hurst scoring...

This is England.... apparently!
Advantages: Dark, gritty & enthrawling
Disadvantages: A bit slow at times
...This Is England is the very successful British drama released 27th April 2007. It?s rated 18 as it contains extremely strong language, violence & racism. This Is England runs for approximately 101 minutes. It had a budget of £1,500,000 & grossed an estimated $8,069,240 at the box office. The film was extremely well received by the critics, infact around 93% of them gave the film a good review. The 18 rating became controversial as this film is mainly aimed at teenagers, however despite the controversy the film remained an 18 rating instead of being overturned to a 15. This Is England won the award for Best British Film at the 2007 British Academy Film Awards & Best Film Category at the 2006 British Independent Film Awards.
This Is England is directed by Shane Meadows who?s considered to be a rising stars & one to look out...

ENGLAND
Advantages: Will win a match one day soon.
Disadvantages: when will that day be?
...The current England cricket team has just started a tour of Zimbabwe after an unsuccessful series against Australia where they found the current world champions far to strong a team and lost the series 1-4 after being completely outplayed in the one-day games.
However, they appear to have learnt from this experience and currently have won all the three games that have been played so far, this despite fielding a team containing new young players. This brought on by the absence of senior player who were unwilling to join the tour party. It does however provide a good opportunity to introduce new players to international cricket and give them valuable experience.
Whilst Zimbabwe are not the sternest opposition England started this tour having lost the last 11 one day games they have played so confidence was not at the highest however...

My England Squad
Advantages: Great crop of young classy players coming through
Disadvantages: Too many false dawns
...Surely if England are going to get a great team going, that time is now, when you look at the ammount of great young English players around nowadays, and I also think Sven Goran Eriksson could be a decent coach despite the negative attitude he has recieved, which has actually been bordering of "Racism" in some newspapers.
Here is just a few of the players, to whom we can choose.
Goalkeepers: Richard Wright (Ipswich) and Paul Robinson (Leeds Utd) are two superb Goalkeepers and very young, as well as David James (yes I actually rate him highly).
Defenders: Wes Brown(looks classy) as well as Gareth Barry, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, Jamie Carragher, Jonathan Woodgate are all solid and classy defenders, to name a few.
Midfielders: Steven Gerrard (future captain), Nick Barmby, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Kieron Dyer, Joe Cole...

This is England
Advantages: Thomas Turgoose, British, nostalga, powerful, thought provoking
Disadvantages: Depressing
...Being a "Skinhead Movie" it is inevitable that This is England gets compared to American History X. Whereas Shane Meadows' epic portrayal of 1980s Britain isn't as much a social commentary about racism and how to overcome it as American History X is, it does, however, provide the perfect mix of nostalgia, individual insecurity, and violent bigotry that makes This is England a personal and powerful experience best approached with your grandmother's old English hanky.
What a weird and wonderful era the 1980s was in Britain. If you're fortunate, or unfortunate, enough to remember a time when Roland Rat and Maggie Thatcher ruled our televisions then you'll find yourself bathing in a mix of nostalgic excitement and/or restraining yourself from smashing the TV to a pulp with the film's opening montage. This sets the menacing air...

One of the finest Elizabethan houses in England
Advantages: Lots of history, plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: Quite expensive for non National Trust members
...If you have ever wondered what an old English country manor house looked like in its heyday then you might want to consider a visit to Hardwick Hall.
Perched on the top of a hill between Chesterfield in North East Derbyshire and Mansfield in North Nottinghamshire this house can be seen from the M1 motorway. If you are travelling southbound between junctions 28 and 29 it can be seen in the distance to your left. Hardwick Hall was the family home of Elizabeth Hardwick, usually referred to as "Bess of Hardwick", who eventually became, through marriage, the Countess of Shrewsbury. Hardwick Hall is now in the care of The National Trust.
Five hundred years ago Elizabeth Hardwick was the second richest woman in England, with a fortune surpassed only by that of Queen Elizabeth 1. With this incredible wealth came an enormous amount...

This WAS England!
Advantages: Very accurate
Disadvantages: The politics might not be everyones cup of tea
...This truly was England of the late 70's and early 80's, having grown up at that time in the Midlands I can confirm that life was like this and people were like this too. This film follows a short period in the life of Shaun whose father had just been killed in the Falklands War. He is bullied at school and befriended by a local Skinhead who takes him under his wing and Shaun is gradually accepted into the Skinhead group, happy to become one of them until their real leader is released from prison and starts to voice his racist views and inflict his National Front style influences which cause a split in the group.
In sections this film is incredibly difficult to watch. And the reason for that is it's so accurate. The guy playing Combat must have known skinheads as a kid and he's right on the mark. All the actors in this are amazing...
