Chester? Winning trophies? Are you sure?

Advantages: Mark Wright, Stephen Vaughan, The ISA (Independent Supporters Association)
Disadvantages: Smallish ground, Little money, Conference status

...Chester, or Chester City as they are now known, were founded in 1885 due to the amalgamation of Chester Rovers and Kings School Old Boys, the secondary school I attended, coincidentally. 1902 saw Chester turn professional. During the early years, Chester played their home games at Faulkner Street in Hoole. Hard to imagine a football ground there now, it is a mini shopping village, entwined in a grid of convenience stores, pubs and takeaways. I believe the stadium was situated behind the Bromfield Arms, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Chester moved in 1898 to the Old Showground, again in Hoole. Presumably this was where there had previously been a fairground, but despite living in Chester myself , I have been unable to locate it. Chester remained at this ground between 1898 and 1899. Whipcord lane became Chester's new home in 1901...

Chilly Chester city sightseeing

Advantages: good live guided talk
Disadvantages: can be chilly or bad in wet weather in open top bus

...NAME OF LOCATION: City Sightseeing Bus Tour, at Chester. There are 18 stops around the city including one outside the train station. BACKGROUND: Whilst on a weekend trip to Chester, my boyfriend Robert and I decided to try the open top tour. Unfortunately we bought our tickets on the Sunday and lost some of the benefits of having 24hours worth, as we went home Sunday evening but learn from our experience! TRANSPORT We visited Chester by coach and walked from outside the walled city to the Cathedral, where the nearest sightseeing bus stop was from our coach drop off point. There was another company doing a ½ hour bus tour from this point on an old fashioned tram like bus but this did not offer the benefits this tour did so we didn't try it. Chester has a railway station but looks on the map to be some distance from the town so...

Chester Zoo

Advantages: A great day out for all the Family
Disadvantages: none,(apart from the weather)

Chester's Chinese Culture

Advantages: great food, good service
Disadvantages: pricey

...As I mentioned on my previous review, I recently took a small trip to Chester to experience the town properly. While there I did many things but one of my most memorable parts was the places I ate in. I fancied a Chinese one night and instead of having a takeaway I wanted to go to a restaurant to get the real experience. I had asked a few locals and the majority all pointed me in the direction of a restaurant called the Slow Boat. It was pouring rain and I didn't really know where I was going but after asking more locals I found myself outside the building. It is sort of out of the way down a side street from the main town you come to a tall brick building with the letters Slow Boat glinting at you from the streetlight reflecting. I went in but realised they didn't actually open until 5.30pm I proceeded up the stairs as sometimes they...

Chester Zoo

Advantages: Great day out
Disadvantages: None

...This past weekend I also had the opportunity to go to Chester Zoo and what a great day out we had. I haven't been to the zoo in years but my best friend moved up here a few years a ago and has a season ticket so she suggested going and I though it was a great idea. Funnily enough Chester zoo is located in Chester in the north west of England. Chester is not a very big place and the zoo is located fairly near the centre of town so it is very easy to find and very well sign posted. The zoo was opened in 1931 by George Mottershead and is the biggest zoo in the UK. According to their brochure hand out that you receive with your tickets, the park covers 110 acres of gardens, has 7,000 animals and over 400 different species. When we arrived at the zoo it was nice to find that they had free parking. We went on a Sunday and it was quite...

CHESTER THE WALLED CITY TO ATTRACT ALL

Advantages: Historical interest, atmospheric, plenty of shops
Disadvantages: threatening of a night time

...memories of that day are of hot sunshine and again eating a packed lunch, but this time on the banks of the River Dee. Since then I have visited Chester many many times. It is easily accessible from my home and in addition members of my family now live there. No matter how many times I visit this city I never tire of it and I have outlined my memories above to show in some way how this city appeals to young, middle aged and old alike. The city itself is always bustling no matter what time of year, throughout the day and at night. It is full of history from the tudor styled houses, to the roman ruins and walls. It is possible to spend a couple of hours walking along the walls and this walk will take you over the shops and the roman ruins, near the racecourse, by the river, alongside the cathedral and eventually back to the shops again...

Adopt an animal at Chester Zoo

Advantages: cheap, plenty to do, entertainment for everyone.
Disadvantages: a very long day.

...Chester Zoo is an exciting experience that you will always remember, the zoo is the UKs number one Zoo and is situated close to the historic city of Chester. This zoo set in 110 acres of gardens, in this stunning setting of over 7000 animals, more than 400 of these species of rare, exotic and endangered wildlife. Chester Zoo's gardens are famous with different garden areas representing different regions and plants. They provide a glorious surrounding to the animals and reflect the natural habitats of some of our most exotic species. That averaged that every year at Chester Zoo's animals eat their way through over £200,000 worth of food, so the zoo run special programs to help raise this money to feed the animals. LOCATION The zoo itself is very easy to get to, as it is in easy reach of the major motorway networks in...

poor old Chester

Advantages: No one to hate
Disadvantages: We give them a good stuffing and it does not feel as good!!!

...AS a Wrexham fan I should sit here singing "we 'ate Chester and we 'ate Chester" I wont. I think its sad that they have gone out of the league. The rivalry between the teams has somewhat diminished since their demise at the end of last season. Its not as much fun looking forward to a derby game against a non league team. When big clubs fall so far down, everyone is suprised . I know Chester are not big but look at Brighton. Playing in the FA cup in the early 80's and now rumbling around the 3rd div. One success story of pulling yourself back form the brink is Man City. Falling from Premiership to playing my beloved Wrexham in Div 2, to back to the premiership. All in 5 years!!!! Cool. WEll done Man City, go to the top of the class....

Diamond review  Visiting Chester zoo

Advantages: Fantastic day out with lots to do
Disadvantages: Cannot do everything in one visit

...Firstly let me tell you a bit about Chester Zoo. Chester Zoo is run by the North of England Zoological Society which was founded in 1934. The North of England Zoological Society is a registered charity that operates Chester Zoo and also receives Government funding. Chester Zoo is now one of the largest zoos in the UK and employs about 250 permanent staff with about another 150 seasonal workers. Today Chester is more than a Zoo as they are heavily into conservation rather the just having the animals for us to stare at. Chester Zoo covers an area of about 100 acres and was founded in 1930 by George Mottershead. George kept the zoo going during the 2nd World War which was followed by a rapid expansion and the foundations of what Chester zoo is today where laid. Initially the Zoo was well know for the designs of their...

The Grosvenor Museum, Chester

Advantages: Free admission, plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: Not fully accessible to disabled visitors

...Chester is a city steeped in history that dates back to the Roman times and beyond so it is not surprising to learn that it has a large museum to serve the purpose of showing off its rich heritage. In fact Chester has several different specialised museums like DEWA the Roman museum and the Military Museum but the Grosvenor Museum is by far its largest museum. I suppose that it would be fair to describe the Grosvenor Museum as Chester's general museum. It is housed within an impressive Grade 2 listed building right in the heart of the city centre and since admission is free it's a great starting point for any visitor to the city to learn about its past. It opened in 1886 with its full title that it still holds today, which is rather a mouthful; The Grosvenor Museum of Natural History and Archaeology, with Schools of Science and Art...
