A Cestrian's View of Chester

Advantages: Rich in history, lots to do rain or shine
Disadvantages: Expensive parking, busy in high season

..., Alexanders Jazz Bar, Slug & Lettuce, Wetherspoons and many more. GUIDED TOURS = Chester Tourism offer many guided tours around the town. These include general city wall excursions, and around Halloween time, there are speciality ghost walks. Chester is allegedly second in line to York for being the most haunted place in England. AND A LITTLE OUT OF TOWN? = There are many attractions situated just a short drive out of the city centre. These include The Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port, Ellesmere Port Boat Museum, Beeston Castle (obviously in Beeston), The Catalyst Museum in Widnes, Jodrell Bank Planetarium in Macclesfield and Wirral Country Park. **So What Are The Advantages Of Visiting Chester?** Chester is extremely easy to reach wherever you are travelling from. It is connected...

Chester

Advantages: Great Torist Attraction
Disadvantages: Isnt One

...Chester was founded By the romans many years ago (I can't find exactly when, in either books or on the net). From what started off a small market place, gathered over the years to become a hugely visited city. Located in the north West of england, just on the welsh Border. Shopping ~~~~~~~~ The main shops are located in or around the city Centre. It has a vast range of stores as well as well known high street brands, such as HMV, boots etc. One shop i would reccomend, is the old sweetshop, located opposite Chester Cathedral. One thing, you'll notice about chester is, most companies have atleast two shops in the city, so your never far away from the shop you need. While on your shopping spree, visit the little shops, such as corner shops etc, as you'll find some of the cheaper products in them. Restaurants...

Charming Chester

Advantages: Great shopping. Lovely architecture. Great pubs.
Disadvantages: A bit pricey

...One of the nicest medium sized provincial cities in England is Chester. It is a basically prosperous place in a strategic position-a fact recognised by the Romans centuries ago-and has a strong local economy. It is a major centre for aircraft manufacturing including the European Airbus and has a strong service sector, including a flourishing tourism industry. It has many beautiful buildings including a lovely colonnaded shopping area. Indeed for its size it is an outstanding shopping centre. It has a number of excellent, elegant, high quality hotels both in the town centre and on the outskirts, and numerous homely bed and breakfast places. The city has some first rate restaurants, bistros, coffee houses and cafes and in the city some of the hostelries are real gems. Chester is also home to a very good zoo and near this attractive city is some...

Chester Zoo

Advantages: Family fun day out!
Disadvantages: Pricey

...I've been to Chester Zoo about 6 times now and each and every time I've visited it's looked totally different. I remember when I was five, This Morning had a competition on. If your name was Emma you could ring up leave your details and you could win tickets to Chester Zoo to see the new baby Rhino, who was also called Emma. Unfortunately I didnt win, but did get to see baby Emma a couple of years later and actually I think she's still there now. 2004 is Chester Zoo's 70th Anniversary and has change so much since George Mottershead first realised his dream. Now they care for 7,000 animals which represent 500 different species and about half of which are endangered. On entering Chester Zoo there is a massive car park and overflow, coach packing area and Enterance Booths. It costs £13 per adult and I assume under 2's are free...

Chester Zoo

Advantages: A great day out for all the Family
Disadvantages: none,(apart from the weather)

...and covering over 400 acres of land. Totally fenced around in 1986 under the Zoo Licensing Act of 1981 The zoo is now run by North of England Zoological Society, (a registered charity which needs much more support as no funding comes from the government). *GETTING AROUND? You can walk steadily around the park at your own pace, or take the Monorail via the two 'stations' around the park, (tickets are valid for a return type journey and can be bought at the machines). Then there is also the Waterbus which runs from the East Zoo Jetty from Easter until Autumn. This 15 minute journey allows a more relaxed way to view the animals of the zoo. *WHAT TO SEE? Once you've paid the entrance fee and walked through the little hut like entrance you are presented with a vast open space, almost bewildering. There are shops to the right...

Chester Zoo

Advantages: Great day out
Disadvantages: None

...This past weekend I also had the opportunity to go to Chester Zoo and what a great day out we had. I haven't been to the zoo in years but my best friend moved up here a few years a ago and has a season ticket so she suggested going and I though it was a great idea. Funnily enough Chester zoo is located in Chester in the north west of England. Chester is not a very big place and the zoo is located fairly near the centre of town so it is very easy to find and very well sign posted. The zoo was opened in 1931 by George Mottershead and is the biggest zoo in the UK. According to their brochure hand out that you receive with your tickets, the park covers 110 acres of gardens, has 7,000 animals and over 400 different species. When we arrived at the zoo it was nice to find that they had free parking. We went on a Sunday and it was quite...

When in Chester, do what the locals do

Advantages: Lovely place
Disadvantages: Does there need to be one

...and Victorian periods was seen as a place of escape from the more industrial cities of Manchester and Liverpool Present Day A considerable amount of land in Chester is owned by Duke of Westminster who owns an estate - Eaton Hall - near the village of Eccleston. Grosvenor is the Duke's family name, which explains such features in the City such as the Grosvenor Bridge, the Grosvenor Hotel, and Grosvenor Park. Much of Chester's architecture dates from the Victorian era, with many of the buildings modelled on the Jacobean half timbered style of the medieval times being designed by John Douglas, who was employed by the Duke as his principal architect. He had a trademark of twisted chimneystacks, many of which can be seen on the buildings in the City centre. Douglas designed amongst other buildings the Grosvenor Hotel and the City Baths. In 1911...

Chester's Chinese Culture

Advantages: great food, good service
Disadvantages: pricey

...As I mentioned on my previous review, I recently took a small trip to Chester to experience the town properly. While there I did many things but one of my most memorable parts was the places I ate in. I fancied a Chinese one night and instead of having a takeaway I wanted to go to a restaurant to get the real experience. I had asked a few locals and the majority all pointed me in the direction of a restaurant called the Slow Boat. It was pouring rain and I didn't really know where I was going but after asking more locals I found myself outside the building. It is sort of out of the way down a side street from the main town you come to a tall brick building with the letters Slow Boat glinting at you from the streetlight reflecting. I went in but realised they didn't actually open until 5.30pm I proceeded up the stairs as sometimes they...

Diamond review  Visiting Chester zoo

Advantages: Fantastic day out with lots to do
Disadvantages: Cannot do everything in one visit

...Firstly let me tell you a bit about Chester Zoo. Chester Zoo is run by the North of England Zoological Society which was founded in 1934. The North of England Zoological Society is a registered charity that operates Chester Zoo and also receives Government funding. Chester Zoo is now one of the largest zoos in the UK and employs about 250 permanent staff with about another 150 seasonal workers. Today Chester is more than a Zoo as they are heavily into conservation rather the just having the animals for us to stare at. Chester Zoo covers an area of about 100 acres and was founded in 1930 by George Mottershead. George kept the zoo going during the 2nd World War which was followed by a rapid expansion and the foundations of what Chester zoo is today where laid. Initially the Zoo was well know for the designs of their...
