China - Unforgettable

Advantages: Great Sights, Changing Culture.
Disadvantages: Difficult Language

...much effect China will have on the world when you meet girls like her and realise there are millions and millions more ready to bring their skills out. On the whole people were curious but polite and even on my own I did not feel unsafe in the cities. The Cuisine = On the tour all meals were provided and generally of a reasonable standard. They were what you would expect of a chinese takeout in the UK, sweet and sour, black bean dishes and lots of rice and dumplings. Breakfasts were western style. If I have a complaint on the tour it is that we got served the same thing over and over for lunch and dinner. Even though there was a large range of dishes, this was repetative. Chopsticks are a must here as no forks are around. Eating out is an option but I am unsure on the health implications. Drinks were usually beer, wine, tea...

Diamond review  Not a Minger

Advantages: interesting food, ancient culture, stunning scenery
Disadvantages: interesting food, air pollution, traffic in Beijing

...In July 2007 I went on holiday to China. I wanted to see it before the Olympic Games, although I had perhaps left it a bit late to see Beijing before the massive construction activity had begun. We used Audley Travel (www.audleytravel.co.uk) to arrange accommodation, flights and some other transport and guides where needed, but otherwise we were on our own. Total cost of the two-week trip including international and internal flights was a little over Ł2,000 each. We flew from London Heathrow to Beijing with British Airways, departing at1635 and arriving at 0935 ten hours later, the next day. A fairly long flight, but bearable and direct. We had already arranged with Audley Travel, for a car to pick us up to make the arrival less traumatic. Beijing Hotels We stayed at the Peace Hotel which is hardly luxurious but comfortable...

Go easy on the eye liner, China!

Advantages: cute
Disadvantages: retired

...From about the age of ten, my friends and I were addicted to collecting TY beanies. For those of you who do not know for some strange reason, TY Beanies are a collection of little teddies in all forms, from animals and teddy bears. Once you start a collection they are quite addictive. Their cute little faces draw you in and indeed they are all adorable! One of the Beanies is a Panda, named China. China sits on his fours, and looks so adorable! His fur is black and white, as you would expect, with the arms and paws black alond with his ears and patches over his eyes, the rest of him white. He looks quite sad, his mouth upside down with his beady little eyes hidden in the blackness of the patches. Though he looks adorable all the same. If you give China a stroke, you will find that he is very soft indeed. His fur is so warm and fuzzy...

China Lake

Advantages: Witty, fast paced, full of suspense
Disadvantages: Maybe a little bit hard to get into

...The story unfolds in Santa Barbara, home of our heroine, Evan Delaney. Evan's six year old nephew currently lives with her, his Dad being posted to the Naval Air Warfare Centre in China Lake and his mum's whereabouts unknown. Unfortunately, events turn sour when a funeral of a family friend gathers some unwanted attention from a religious cult called the Remnant. Sassy Evan, definately no shrinking violet, has a few choice words for the groups leader, Wyoming and from here, her adventures begin. Why does she get involved? Well, here comes the crunch (and I promise you this does not give away too much of the book!) - guess who has joined the Remnants? - Luke's Mum Tabitha! Guess what else? - They want Luke back! Now, who would trust an evil, gunweilding religious cult with a six year old? Not Evan! Unfortunatley, the Remnant are...

Review of China Lake - Meg Gardiner

Way off the Beaten Track.

Advantages: An insight into a totally different culture and way of life.
Disadvantages: Language barriers, Staring, Queuing, Cold.

.... ********************************************************************* The food is very interesting. It could be good and by the same token it could also be terrible... It stands to reason that your average Chinese take-away from down the road is very different to what you are actually going to get to eat in China. Sharing several dishes is the norm in China, which I really enjoy and you must know how to use chop sticks. Rice comes with everything, including breakfast, noodles were surprisingly uncommon. The food is generally good, cooked fresh, usually including large quantities of chilli and garlic and often very oily. Sometimes though we would just have to grin and bear it, after all we had to eat. We had some appalling food. There is one meal in particular that springs to mind here. We paid for it and left, hardly touching a thing.... I don't know what it was and I never want to, tasteless congealed mush...

My life in Yunnan

Advantages: A nice place to visit with tons to see
Disadvantages: Language barrier for some people

...I've been living in Kunming city the capital of Yunnan province for around one and half year so far, studying Chinese language and also doing some traveling on the surrounding area, and still hasn't covered the whole province. Yunnan is one of the most southern part of China bordered with Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos. There are 25 minority groups in Yunnan province, each has their own culture, live style, food and many more, making Yunnan province to be one of the culture rich province in China. The weather in Yunnan province varies from place to place, the most southern part which is Xishuangbanna is very tropical. The biggest tropical rain forest of China is located in the valley area here. In this tropical rain forest, many unique, ancient, peculiar and endangered kinds of tropic animals and plants live, structuring many...

Great Things

Advantages: Great Wall, history, unique experience
Disadvantages: Enormous language and cultural barriers

...Back in 2004, I decided to take a six month career break and further decided that I would occupy most of this time by taking a four month trip around Asia. I also toyed with the idea of South America, as just like Asia, there are several countries there I would like to visit one day. But in the end Asia won on account of the higher number of places on "my list" and also because I had not done a trip like this before and I though Asia would be a bit easier, possibly safer for a lone female traveller. I didn't write reviews back in those days, however I recently stumbled upon the journal I kept at the time and with the help of that plus my ever failing memory, hopefully I have enough to put my experiences down in some kind of a useful manner. China has always fascinated me and as the northernmost country included in my plans, it was...

Bone China by Roma Tearne

Advantages: Interesting easy to read novel
Disadvantages: None

...The author, Roma Tearne, was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Britain when ten years old. Before becoming a writer she trained as a painter and her work has been widely exhibited. Bone China is her second book and is a very enjoyable and moving story, following four generations of the de Silva family, from the 1930's onwards. The de Silva's are a Tamil family living in Ceylon, or Sri Lanka as it was. Grace is the family matriarch to a somewhat dysfunctional family and is the link that bonds all the characters of the book. Grace was born into a rich land owning family but she marries Aloysius for love and watches with great dignity as, over the years, he drinks and gambles away her family's fortune. Always trying to maintain the traditions and customs of her time, in a country every increasingly torn apart by political and civil...

China China Swansea

Advantages: All you can eat at a reasonable price
Disadvantages: It's so tasty you'll probably eat too much

...In my humble opinion China China offers an exceptionally varied, delicious buffet menu at a reasonable price. The freshly cooked food is constantly being added to the hot serving tables, the 'Seafood' in particular is delicious and it's a real treat to have such a well prepared aray of tasty Mussels, King Prawns, and Squid. If you'd rather the more conventional meat dishes there are plenty of Chicken, Beef, Spare Ribs etc. and all sorts of side dishes, from Special Fried Rice or Spring Rolls to plain old boring Chips for the less experimental of you. Even lots of pretty average but tasty Cheese Cakes. Ice Creams or Fruit Salads for afters (if you can fit them in). My only criticism is of me not China China, and that is I keep confusing 'All you would like to eat' with 'All you can eat' and as it's so tasty I made a right pig of myself...

Imperial China - Excellent Value and Well Worth the Visit

Advantages: Great Location. Good Food. Excellent Value. Great Service.
Disadvantages: Minor compaint about Beef Satay starter, but otherwise no issues at all.

...INTRODUCTION The plethora of eating establishments concentrated around the streets of Chinatown can be bewildering for the casual diner. Eating out for most of us these days is a luxury, and when you are ready to splash out your hard-earned cash, you want to know you are getting value for money. We were looking for a pre-theatre dinner close to Shaftesbury Avenue, and whilst most of Chinatown?s restaurants don?t do a special ?threatre menu? per se, Chinese food is generally quickly made and served, simply prepared and as such, ideal for a quick get away in time for curtain up. The event was my wife?s 30th birthday, so I was determined to ensure (as much as one can ensure these things) that we were not disappointed. After a little on-line research and a quick call to a Chinese friend who is a veteran of dining the area, I settled...
