My Name Is Still Michael Caine

Advantages: Excellent book, Learn about film making, practical book
Disadvantages: Doesn't teach you how to act

...Currently I'm studying musical theatre at college so when I heard about the book, Acting in Film by Michael Caine I wanted to purchase it. I love Michael Caine and admire his work I have been following him for many years. He is an amazing actor who has starred in many films and is more than qualified to discuss the viewpoint he has when it comes to producing movies. As an expert of film and acting I very enjoyed reading his viewpoint and felt that I learned a lot from reading his book. This new revised and expanded edition includes wonderful photographs throughout the book. It is very well presented with clear photographs that are relevant to the book's subject. The chapters include Preparation, In Front of the Camera - Before You Shoot, The Take, Characters, Directors, On Being a Star, and more besides. Each chapter takes you from Caine...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Christopher Brookmyre's Schooldays

Advantages: Great characters, situations familiar to all of us
Disadvantages: Slightly unsatisfying ending

...I'm not a big fan of crime novels, but with Jasper Fforde and Christopher Brookmyre making such consistently brilliant efforts at subverting the genre, my resistance is being eroded fairly swiftly. Christopher Brookmyre has established a formidable reputation for Scottish crime thrillers. Full of bodily fluids and lurid characters, they're generally hilarious to read, but shot through with such extreme violence that there's no chance of them ever being left in the 'humour' section. A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil is told entirely in the present tense, and follows two linked story strands - the progress through school of a group of Scottish children from their first day right through to their leaving 'dance', and a murder investigation about twenty years later. Brookmyre's previous works have often made a big deal...

McCain Micro Chips

Advantages: Convenient and kids love em!
Disadvantages: Dry and bland tasting

...I took my 6 year old son on the weekly food shop with me in the half term holidays - big mistake! His little eyes lit up at the sight of all the goodies on Tescos shelves. When walking through the freezer section he noticed some McCain Micro Chips in the freezer and asked if he could have some as his best friend liked them! I'm not a fan of frozen chips as a whole but to keep him happy I threw a packet in the trolley. Each packet of Micro Chips is a small, black, rectangular cardboard box. The box has a perforated front which you rip open before you microwave them. When I opened the front up the chips looked quite cheap in appearence. The chips themselves are quite long and thinly cut. You get 4 packs of Micro chips packaged together within a clear cellophane wrapper. These are priced at £1.41 for the pack of 4. Sometimes you can...

McCain Smiles - Perfect for a Fussy Eater

Advantages: quick to cook
Disadvantages: none

...My son at the moment is a very fussy eater and refuses to eat any sort of potato, but the one thing he does love is McCain Smiles. Packaging On the front of the red plastic packaging is a picture of a sunflower, when you look closely you can see that it is actually sunflower petals and in the middle is a smile which I think is very clever! When I took the smiles out of the bag they looked very pale in colour, they are round with of course a smiley face, there are holes for the eyes and a big smiley mouth. Cooking Instructions You can either grill or oven cook the smiles, I use the oven at gas mark 7 and they usually take 12- 15 minutes to cook. Once the smiles come out of the oven they will look golden in colour and look very inviting to eat! Ingredients Potatoes, Dehydrated Potato (contains...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Christopher Robin Goes to Skull

Advantages: nice litle adventure with Pooh and friends
Disadvantages: not quite up to the standrard one associates with the franchise

...Poor Pooh! It's the last day of summer, and wanting to have a another grand day of summer playtime with all his friends, he discovers that Christopher Robin cannot come to play. Christopher Robin has left him a note instead, which Pooh and his friends read with great alarm. he has gone to Skull! Oh no! They must save him from the dangers of Skull before something dreadful happens! What follows is a story of friendship and bravery as Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and the gang set out to save their best friend, Christopher Robin. But just where is Skull, and what dangers might this scary sounding place have? They don't know, but they decide to face it all anyway, out of love. This is a feature length film for young fans of Winnie the Pooh, and it's one of the better ones though by no means the best. The animation doesn't have the look...

Cometh the film, cometh the man

Advantages: Great Caine filmography
Disadvantages: You need to like Caine

...THE AUTHOR Christopher Bray graduated in Film and Literature at Warwick University. He's written about films and books for the Observer, Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Times, Independant, New Statesman, Spectator, etc. This is his first book. BIOGRAPHY OR FILM BUFF'S CRITIQUE? A critical filmography and biography. The personal biography takes second stage to the analysis - nay deconstruction - of Caine's performances in every film he appeared in, up to publication date. Your favourite Caine film/s will be here, from his earliest to 'Mona Lisa' (which arguably heralded his 'comeback'), to 'Last Orders', the 'Quiet American' etc, as well as many you may never have heard of. It's a film buff's book, but also a Caine buff's book. Bray interleaves biography with social history, showing how Caine's initial circumstances, his escape from...

McCain smiles

Advantages: taste nice, good for kids
Disadvantages: a bit expensive

...What are they? McCain smiles are a frozen potato product aimed at children. They are basically mashed poato made into the shape of a smiley face, and I think they are meant to be a fun alternative to chips. The description the packet gives is as follows 'McCain smiles are bite sized fun faces made from fresh mashed poato. You're guaranteed smiles all round!' Price These cost £1.09 for a 454g bag at my local Bell's store. Personally I think that's expensive, but I got them on a buy one get one free offer, which I think makes them slightly better value for money. I have since seen them in ASDA for around 89 pence. Appearence As I said above, these are in the shape of smiley faces. They are round and approximatley 3 inches (7.5 cm) in diameter, although I must admit I've never actually measured one! They have two round holes...

McCains Home Fries - a Chip off the Old Block

Advantages: Quite filling. Goes nicely with almost any meal. Rather moreish.
Disadvantages: Quite fattening. Take a longer time to cook than your standard chip.

...McCain is a name that is synonymous with teatime dinners. For decades they have been producing chips, vegetables and other potato based products, and have developed a reputation for high quality food. Having tasted their brand of Home Fries (which are considerably thicker than your standard chip), I can safely say that they uphold their reputation. The price may be a negative factor, at around £2 for a 1.5kg bag (although I have seen them around on special offers where the price has been £1). However, for the price, you do get good quality potatoes. The packaging is appealing. A royal blue bag with "Home Fries" written in bold red letters, above an appetising bowl of golden chips. The sunflowers that appear behind the McCain logo go to show that they can be cooked with a healthy alternative to the more fattening cooking oils...
