Christopher Brookmyre's Schooldays

Advantages: Great characters, situations familiar to all of us
Disadvantages: Slightly unsatisfying ending

...I'm not a big fan of crime novels, but with Jasper Fforde and Christopher Brookmyre making such consistently brilliant efforts at subverting the genre, my resistance is being eroded fairly swiftly. Christopher Brookmyre has established a formidable reputation for Scottish crime thrillers. Full of bodily fluids and lurid characters, they're generally hilarious to read, but shot through with such extreme violence that there's no chance of them ever being left in the 'humour' section. A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil is told entirely in the present tense, and follows two linked story strands - the progress through school of a group of Scottish children from their first day right through to their leaving 'dance', and a murder investigation about twenty years later. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Not Christopher Walken's finest hour

Advantages: Some good action scenes / it only cost 97p!!
Disadvantages: some ridiculously laughable moments

...Was in my local Tesco's early one morning, and picked up a DVD copy of 'McBain' i was attracted to it due to the fact that it was an action film which was priced under a quid (97p to be exact!) The film begins during the closing stages of the vietnam war, when Christopher Walken (who plays Robert McBain) and other american POW's are being tortured ny north vietnamese soldiers, an american ranger battalion attack the prison camp and free the POW's, in the ensuing battle McBain's life is saved by one of the american soldiers (by the name of Santos) The film then moves to present day Columbia where freedom fighters (led by Santos) are trying to overthrow a brutal military dictatorship. Santos is caught and executed, and when McBain finds out about this he swears revenge.He tracks down as many of Santos's old vietnam unit...

...of the varden rebels i would reccomend this as a read to anyone and everyone, even if you havnt got the patience to read it then buy the audio books and listen to it in the car on the way to work, or while relaxing in the bath after a long day. Well done Christopher Paolini!...

...Christopher Pike is an absolutely fantastic writer, i have read many of his books and have been sad to finish them. Final friends takes you through 3 books: Final Friends 1- the party Final Friends 2- the dance Final Friends 3- the graduation In the first book of the trilogy, a young girl called Alice dies from an aparant suicide at her own party but her close friend michel thinks otherwise. He thinks she was murdered. The books then follow the lives of Alice's friends including Michel who has taken the role as a detective to find out the truth about his friends death. More people die, others get hurt but eventually the truth is revealed. I loved all three of these books, they kept me hooked all the way through. These are not just your average mystery thrillers, they are much more. Pike does not just focus on the one issue...

Walken's the best baddy

...Christopher Walken laughs, sulks and twitches his way through the part of Max Zorin, the classiest Bond foe in ages, as if he's enjoying every impulse that streams through his evil consciousness. At times, he's reminiscent of Klaus Maria Brandauer's criminal in Never Say Never Again. The madman's masterplan, Project Main Strike, is to destroy Silicon Valley, in California, and its microchip production by causing an earthquake along the San Andreas and Hayward faults. Grace Jones' catwalk villainess cuts a finer figure than the usual Bond heavy. It's a pity she turns out good in the end. But, like Walken, she puts in an exuberant performance. This is the best Bond film that Moore did by far even if he was past his best....
