...Yankee Candles: On a recent trip to York, (truly the most terrifying experience of my life due to my agoraphobia and spaghetti junction ? boy is that thing evil), I saw some Yankee candles on half price offer in a little gift shop. I thought ?ooh I could get a few as Christmas/Birthday presents? but things didn?t work out quite like that. I took one of the candles off the shelf to sniff at it and the lid, (which wasn?t secured properly), fell off. The shop keeper was over in seconds and quickly found a broken jewellery stand and informed me that all breakages must be paid for before having a go at me and accusing me of picking up the candle by the lid. Needless to say I was peeved and so instead of spending a small fortune I paid the £5.00 for the broken tat and only purchased one candle. The candle I chose was a Canary Island Banana...

...Have you ever wondered how the tiered wedding cake came about? Look no further than the distinctive spire of St Brides just off Fleet Street. An 18th century baker William rich used the three tired spire as inspiration in a range of wedding cakes and it has became the standard ever since. However there is so much more to this delightful little church which I often visit to get away from it all. Saint Bride's has a long and interesting history. Temple Church: A Curious Congregation of Knights and Lawyers

Advantages: Excellent original features. Beautiful interior restoration.

The Sacred Heart Church, Tibidabo, Barcelona

Advantages: Beautiful church, great views of Barcelona below.

.... The first tier is brown stone and the top tier is white stone. Steps lead up to the entrance of the church, and standing outside looking up, it looks just as impressive as it does when viewed from a distance anywhere in Barcelona. There is a paved 'square' area, which also serves as a viewing platform, giving breathtaking panoramic views of the city below. We went inside the church (admission is free) and although it is small inside, it is absolutely beautiful, with its stained windows and detailed stone work. The altar has three parts with statues above, one of which being a copy of the Black Madonna. The original of this statue can be seen at Monserrat. Their founder, Michael Kittredge, did not have much money and decided to make a gift for his mum for Christmas. He melted down some wax crayons and made a candle and after some interest from the locals the business grew and grew. It is now the largest US manufacturer of scented candles. ...I found this whole procedure a little shall we say "odd" and perhaps "unbelievable". However I decided that as a friend was now qualified in the practice I would pay for the service. I am a sceptic when it comes to things like this and could not understand how burning a candle held into my ear hole would remove the wax and leave me feeling better. Described as "Quite different from conventional wax candles, a Hopi ear candle is actually a cotton tube, impregnated with beeswax, honey and therapeutic oils, that is painlessly inserted into the ear to draw out impurities, relieve pressure in the head and sinuses, and aid hearing problems." I was advised before the treatment started that I may not visibly see any wax in the candle when it was unravelled but that the treatment would have dislodged earwax even if it hadn't removed...

...the building you have a choice of directions to go and we always go to the left 1st and follow the same pattern as we move through the workshops. The main feature as you enter the building are the candles and there are lots of them. Moving through there are candles of every shape and colour that you could imagine along with matching holders, beads, bowls, lanterns and the range is enormous. Don't worry you can still buy plain church candles also in various sizes along with a plain candle holder if you wish. Following the room around we come to the candle making part of the showroom and there is always somebody making candles for you to watch. They are not making candles from scratch but actually engraving a fancy design into a candles and gently teasing the coloured layer of wax away from the white centre to form shapes just using a knife. I would never even have considered buying her "Voice of an Angel" style CDs, purely because classical and operatic style music isn't my thing.
