Canterbury Christ Church College, best time of my life....
Advantages: Good courses, good tutors, great social scene, friendly and welcoming
Disadvantages: Accomodation limited
...I studied a combined honours degree in Business Studies & Sport Science and I'd do it again without hesitation.
Initially Canterbury Christ Church wasn't top of my list, yet with an unexpected set of grades it was Canterbury that were the first to offer me a place and the chance to visit the campus. I visited for the first time on a snowy December day just a few days before Christmas. As I disembarked the train from London and walked up the High Street toward the campus it was almost picture perfect for the time of year with the old tudor shops and the smell of roasted chestnuts in the air.
On arriving at the campus it struck me that the majority of students there are reasonably local or from London and its suburbs. There are also a small number of foreign students from all corners of the globe. The atmosphere is very welcoming...

St Brides the Wedding Cake Church
Advantages: free, interesting crypt, peaceful
Disadvantages: not so many memorials to look at
...Have you ever wondered how the tiered wedding cake came about? Look no further than the distinctive spire of St Brides just off Fleet Street. An 18th century baker William rich used the three tired spire as inspiration in a range of wedding cakes and it has became the standard ever since. However there is so much more to this delightful little church which I often visit to get away from it all.
Saint Bride's has a long and interesting history. Named after Saint Bridget, a 5th century Irish saint who turned well water into beer (a nice party trick me thinks and always a welcome guest) there has been at least been seven church buildings on the site since Saxon times. Being on Fleet Street it is known as the Journalist's church and it is associated with a number of literary figures such as Boswell, Dryden, Lovelace, the diarist Evelyn...

Temple Church: A Curious Congregation of Knights and Lawyers
Advantages: Excellent original features. Beautiful interior restoration.
Disadvantages: Variable opening hours
...?, and all of a sudden, a whole cottage industry sprang up tracing the fictional Robert Langdon?s breathless dash across London on so-called Da Vinci Tours. One of the most popular stops on that tour is Temple Church, and for a short time after the release of the film, it was a virtual no-go area for regular visitors, having been swamped by oversized Americans in daft clothing and breathless snap-happy Japanese. If it sounds like I am lazily reverting to national stereotype it?s because I speak from personal experience. I?ve lost count of the times that my quiet contemplation was interrupted by squeals of delight from ?Marty? and ?Mabel? as they discovered something they?d seen in ?that movie?. Sigh.
If I am taking a little while to come to the business end of this review, it?s because I am not a ?Grail tourist? and felt it imperative to...

Time after time...
Advantages: Interesting, easy to read, useful information
Disadvantages: -
...Laurence Hull Stookey?s book, Calendar: Christ?s Time for the Church, seems to be written for a primarily Protestant readership. There are many clues to this, but perhaps none more telling than the Appendix subtitled This Book in a Nutshell. As I go through each of the pairs of ideas, I find that my upbringing and training has concentrated more on the right column (the column Stookey invites readers to consider as an alternative) rather than the ?assumed teaching? column. Thus, one of my tasks was to think about how the ?assumed teaching? came about in some traditions, but not my own. Certainly there are historical, developmental reasons for this. As evidenced in class discussions, there can still be a great deal of resistance to ideas such as lectionary cycles or liturgical years. These things seem natural to me, however, and would be...

Church of the Poisoned Mind?
Advantages: A few fairly decent pop songs
Disadvantages: A few not so decent pop songs
...'t mean you'll be any good at actually being one, as the winners of "Fame Academy" will be able to tell you. The only way to judge for sure if the transition is to be a successful one is on the music she produces.
There's a very Girls Aloud influence to "Call My Name", with the same sassy attitude as they had on their "What Will the Neighbours Say?" album and a heavy synth use giving the song a slight funk edge in parts, not too dissimilar to some of Rachel Stevens' solo work. It's got a decent groove to it, and it's a nice up-tempo pop tune to introduce the new Charlotte Church to the world.
Not being someone who keeps up with chart music all that closely, it was a while after release before I heard the first single, "Crazy Chick". Indeed, the first time I heard it, on the radio of a coach, I thought it was a new Girls Aloud song...

"GET ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME!"
Advantages: Shows & Tells Directions; Helps you find your way if you miss a turn; gives detours
Disadvantages: Big brother knows where you are - tracks you while it gives directions.
...;≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡
In July 1981, we went to a wedding in Bristol on the way to our Youth Hostel at Poppit Sands in Wales. We had never been to the church before, and were unaware of the exact direction in Bristol we were heading for. After spending an hour travelling a few miles down the motorway, we decided to come off the M5 "carpark" an exit early, and attempt to find the church by back routes. Every time we asked directions of a passerby, we were given inane (or even "insane") directions, such as, "turn right at the lights, proceed about a mile, and ask someone else" - and this was even at service stations . . .
Eventually, we found the church, about an hour late - just in time for the reception.
The StreetPilot i3 would have gotten us to...

The Sacred Heart Church, Tibidabo, Barcelona
Advantages: Beautiful church, great views of Barcelona below.
Disadvantages: None
...On a recent trip to Barcelona, I went on a city tour to take in some of the sights that we had missed on our last visit.
A place I was really looking forward to visiting was Tibidabo Mountain, which is the highest peak in Barcelona at over 500m above sea level.
Anyone who visits Barcelona will not fail to notice Tibidabo, and this is due to the imposing church of Sagrat Cor (Sacred Heart) which stands at the top of the mountain, and the impressive statue of Jesus Christ on the highest spire of the church.
On travelling in and out of Barcelona, seeing this church and statue on top of the mountain is a fantastic sight.
The church is the work of architect Enrique Sagnier, and building commenced in 1902 and took 60 years to build, so it is actually not that old!
The church is unusual in that it is built as a church on top of a church...

Small church big history
Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Not good for wheelchair users
...St Paul's Church
On a recent visit to Bede's World in Jarrow, we also went to St Pauls church, which is a short walk through a park from Bedes World. Visitors wanting to visit the church should follow signs for Bede's World, and parking is available either just outside the church or in Bede's World
The church is actually the parish church of Jarrow, and so sometimes there are services on, but when nothing is happening, visitors are welcome to have a look around.
The church can be accessed from an open gate at the front, with a path leading to the door of the church or from the side, which is the entrance which leads from the park. At the time we went to the church, it was undergoing some restoration work to the roof, so there was lots of scaffolding, and once inside the church, there was also evidence of building work in the form...

Halifax Parish Church
Advantages: Lots of history, friendly staff
Disadvantages: None for me
...involved within a feud between two local families called the Savilles and the Tempests. The feud ended with the Vicar being murdered in the church in 1556.The Holdsworth Chapel contains some lovely examples of carved woodwork although the altar which was a gift to the chapel in 1634 in my opinion is rather modest looking and to me just looked rather like my kitchen table draped with a white linen cloth.
Opposite to The Holdsworth Chapel on the north side of the church there is another small chapel called the The Rokeby Chapel. In 1502 William Rokeby, a former vicar of the church left a sum of money in his will for a chapel to be built in his memory on the south side of the church. However his successor Vicar Holdsworth decided to build his own chapel first in the same spot so the Rokeby Chapel had to be built elsewhere. At the time of his...

Another church called St Mary's
Advantages: Lots of history, free to visit
Disadvantages: None for me
...this was replaced in the 1820's with a new steeple, which was again struck by lightning in 1978. They say lightening never strikes twice but it did here. In more recent times part of the church was restored in 2002 with the help of National Lottery funding.
There are a couple of interesting facts about St Mary's, one of which relates to the Quaker movement, which I will come to in a moment whilst the other involves the church house.
The church house was built around 1250 and stands directly in front of the church. Today the original building has been extended but it is now the Cross keys public house and a part of the former graveyard is now its beer garden. Much of the original building has been retained and there are low ceilings and miniature doors that would indicate that no one grew taller than 5 feet all those years ago. The interior...
