...I am fortunate to live right next to a large Shopping Centre, that not only contains many good stores but is itself surrounded by many other retailers, restaurants, cinemas, etc. My favourite attraction: the Cineworld multiplex. Cineworld is Britain's second largest multiplex cinema operator in the United Kingdom, with 74 cinemas and over 800 screens. It also has one cinema in Jersey and another in the Republic of Ireland. Its first cinema opened in 1996, and the company has since integrated the UGC cinema chain. I like the "ambiance" at my local Cineworld. There is another huge cinema complex down the road, and even though everything in it is more spacious (lobby, screen rooms, washrooms) and boasts a slicker, more sophisticated decor, it feels colder and less welcoming. Credo - I believe in cinema

Advantages: Beautiful, artistic, accessible
Disadvantages: Some may be put off by the subtitling

...now. Cinema was true escapism and heavily censored by the church. The act of going to the cinema was akin to going to church with the same sense of occasion and importance. Through a series of flashbacks we follow the life journey of a young boy (Salvatore aka Toto) obsessed by the movies and the life that they breathe into the town. Cinema Paradiso is romantic without being soppy and manipulates the audience's emotion with complete disregard to decorum. There's a warmth to the film despite the audience's emotions going though the whole gamut of feelings; funny, sad, anger and love are all experienced and leave one feeling that this was indeed a clever film. The plot is simplicity itself - a fly on the wall style reminiscence of a man who, as a boy, would abscond with the milk money in the hope of catching a moment on the screen...

Better than the cinemas! Fresher too!

Advantages: Real cinema sweet taste.

Maidenhead Odeon Cinema - stay away!!

Advantages: there wasn't any!
Disadvantages: no food or drink, dirty, screens didn't work, didn't show any of the top movies

...we wanted to see. From the outside, the cinema doesn't seem as impressive or big compared to the Vue cinema I usually go to in Cambridge. We walked through the doors, to find a large, virtually empty room. There was a really old arcade machine to the right, and to the left a small counter where you're meant to buy your tickets. There was no food or drink to be seen, and at the far end of the room was a few doors with numbers above them - obviously being the screen numbers. So at this point, we were both pretty unimpressed by what we saw. However, both wanting to see a movie after our morning swim, we looked up at the two plasma screens above the counter to find out what time our movie was being shown. Guess what? They weren't on! Europes tallest cinema

Advantages: price, location, choice
Disadvantages: lack of parking

...[Updated 01/01/03, details at bottom] Opened on 21 September 2000, as Europes tallest cinema at 12 storeys high, with 18 screens. Typically showing 22 films this is by far the biggest choice in Central Scotland. Located next to Cambridge Street carpark, Buchanan Bus Station, Queen Street Railway Station and Buchanan underground these are the best ways to travel to the venue, as parking in Glasgow is severely restrcited and pricey. (If driving into Glasgow the Odeon at The Quay will be cheaper, but not as good) The cinema opens at 10:45 (unless there are early screenings for new releases). "Early bird" tickets are available for all screenings before 12:00, currently £3. Sign postings to the screens is amazingly poor, but I think they assume you know you have to go upstairs! Odeon cinema - The Quay

Advantages: modern, clean
Disadvantages: access by road only

...Although located about 2 miles from the city centre, The Quay is in a retail park based around the Odeon cinema, making ideal for city centre visitors without having to pay parking charges. Ideally located for access from the M8 (eastbound Kinning Park exit), and from the M77. 12 screens, from 89 to 279. Normally showing between 14 and 18 films, at various times. Adult tickets are £5, students/children are £3.50. No further discounts are currently offered (as at 01/06/02). After entering the foyer, a rather vast servery is available in the centre of the floor. You are permitted to bring your own food/drinks onto premises. UGC: Unbelievably Great Cinema

Advantages: 19 screens means loads of films to choose from!
Disadvantages: Sweets are rather expensive.

There is boards outside informing you of showings, but you're best to go inside into the warmth and have a look at the screens inside with the cinema times on them. There is barriers to keep the queue under control, but on busy days and times the queue can sometimes end up right out the door and up the street. I tend to go during the day when it is quieter. If you go to see a screening before 12 noon you can get your ticket for the reduced rate of £3.50. Student tickets are £3 at some times and days, £3.50 at others. I'm not sure about other ticket prices as it's just student tickets I buy. I had a quick look on their website but couldn't see anything about ticket prices, but I'd imagine they'll be reasonable. It?s a very handy facility to have but notorious for not working properly & being a little restrictive. All settled in at Uni now, so I decided it was time to post another of my fantastic reviews! :p LOCATION The UGC cinema stands in the trendy CornerHouse complex in Nottingham City Centre, where it took over the site from Warner Bros. There are plenty of trendy clubs, pubs, restaurants and bars surrounding the area, including Foreman's, potentially the smallest bar I have ever seen! As result, it is quite easy to include the UGC in any plans for a night out, which is quite convenient. PRICE Acceptable. About £4.80 for a regular adult admission, £3.10 with a student card. They also have "early bird specials" at the weekend, where any film before 12 midday on a Saturday/Sunday is at a hugely discounted rate, about £2.70 if I rememeber rightly, which is pretty good value for money in my opinion.
