Discover the best of European cinema

Advantages: A fantastic collection of shorts.
Disadvantages: None.

...Cinema16 is a fantastic compilation of European short films, giving you a glimpse at some of the most undervalued cinematographic handiworks, many who were crafted by some of the leading voices of modern cinema, such as Danish director Lars Von Trier, the controversial English comedian Chris Morris, and even the madcap French director, behind the infamous Dobermann (1999-2000), Jan Kounen. The funny thing about the Cinema16 DVD is that there is no rating to be found on the box; especially funny when you consider the strictness of the BBFC, and also, it's occasionally ridiculous ratings (for example, Rosemary's Baby being rated 18 - pathetic). Cinema16 could be considered a "certified 15" in my opinion. Individually, the short lengths vary between 8 and 20 minutes, frequently between 10 and 15 minutes, bringing the whole 16 shorts...

Review of Cinema 16 - European Short Films (DVD)

Cinema Paradiso is film paradise!

Advantages: Moving and heartwarming story, one of the most beautiful film endings ever.
Disadvantages: That the version for UK and US release cuts out key scenes.

...This has to be one of my favourite ever films and will be a sheer delight to those who love the cinema. Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, the film was originally released in Italy in 1988, was reworked following critics reaction and was re-released in 1989. The edited version went on to win the Jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (it is in Italian with subtitles). The recent DVD release (2003) comprises both the 1989 original theatrical version and the director?s cut, with original and extra scenes added, and is a real treat! The film begins in the present day, where we are introduced to Salvatore, a film director, as he learns that an old friend from his hometown has died. As he prepares to return for the funeral, flashbacks take us back to the small town in Sicily, then coming to...

Review of Cinema Paradiso (The Director's Cut) (DVD)

Credo - I believe in cinema

Advantages: Beautiful, artistic, accessible
Disadvantages: Some may be put off by the subtitling

...FILM ONLY (with brief reference to the Director's Cut) Foreign language films are rarely top of my watch list although I have seen some cracking examples. Invariably those that I like tend to the arty side of cinema. Occasionally there'll be a foreign language breakthrough like Amelié which brings this genre to the attention of a wider audience whereas films such as Tous les Matins du Monde will remain forever in the background. Cinema Paradiso is, however, a film that is both accessible and beautiful and cannot fail to be appreciated by anyone with a love of cinema. That it is subtitled is far from distracting, the photography taking care of the story for the most part and one is quickly subsumed into a world that is all encompassing. Post-war Italy was a very different place to the society in which we live...

Love cinema? Cineworld Unlimited Card

Advantages: Great value if you use it
Disadvantages: Can be cheaper to pay as you go

...'. The upshot of this was that seeing a film at a 'proper' cinema meant an hour's drive each way to either Braintree or Ipswich. So when I moved to Northamptonshire, the lure of not one but TWO multiplexes in spitting distance was too strong to resist. At that time, the UGC cinema was on my route home from the office and I found it very difficult to drive past and not drop in especially as I was in temporary 'digs' waiting for a house purchase to go through. The UGC became my second home. The first time I visited I discovered the Unlimited scheme. How it works *********** For just £10.99 a month (it was £9.99 when I joined nearly 2 years ago) you can go to the cinema as often as you want. It really is that simple. You can use your local cinema or any other Cineworld cinema, anywhere in the country - with the exception of the 4 West End...

Better than the cinemas! Fresher too!

Advantages: Real cinema sweet taste.
Disadvantages: No re-seal option on the bag.

...After a busy week of looking after children, house and husband I don't mind admitting to looking forward to Sunday evening, Sunday is my other halves day off and once 6.30 hits it's just us, peace and quiet! We usually like to sit in front of a film or play the ps2 with a varied selection of snacks spread out in front of us. I discovered Butterkist cinema sweet popcorn just before Christmas; we do a huge shop every year and buy in tonnes of naughty things to see us through the Christmas period. Normal toffee popcorn can sometimes be a bit too sweet so I thought I'd give the new cinema sweet variety a try, i've not had toffee popcorn since. Produced in Pontefract, West Yorkshire Butterkist is the UK's leading popcorn brand, it is made by Monkhill Confectionery which is part of the Cadbury Schweppes group. Butterkist popcorn was...

Maidenhead Odeon Cinema - stay away!!

Advantages: there wasn't any!
Disadvantages: no food or drink, dirty, screens didn't work, didn't show any of the top movies

...I don't know anything about Maidenhead to be honest, but I'm pretty sure this is the only cinema there. I was away staying at me girlfriends Nan's last week, and we wanted to go to the cinema. We went swimming first, which is why we were at Maidenhead in the first place. Anyway, we got there at about midday, and couldn't wait to sit down and enjoy our movie... At the time we weren't one hundred percent sure what we wanted to see... I wanted to see the new Batman film, however my girlfriend hadn't seen any of the other Batman films and wanted to see them before spending £7 on seeing the newest one. So we decided we'd see that another time. We both wanted see Wall-E, and had both heard pretty good things about it - and we'd both been laughing at the films trailer the night before when we saw it on TV! So we'd finally decided what film...

Europes tallest cinema

Advantages: price, location, choice
Disadvantages: lack of parking

...[Updated 01/01/03, details at bottom] Opened on 21 September 2000, as Europes tallest cinema at 12 storeys high, with 18 screens. Typically showing 22 films this is by far the biggest choice in Central Scotland. Located next to Cambridge Street carpark, Buchanan Bus Station, Queen Street Railway Station and Buchanan underground these are the best ways to travel to the venue, as parking in Glasgow is severely restrcited and pricey. (If driving into Glasgow the Odeon at The Quay will be cheaper, but not as good) The cinema opens at 10:45 (unless there are early screenings for new releases). "Early bird" tickets are available for all screenings before 12:00, currently £3. Sign postings to the screens is amazingly poor, but I think they assume you know you have to go upstairs! Access is via escalator or lifts. The screens...

If you like shorts this is where to go.

Advantages: Everything about this DVD is an advantage!!!!
Disadvantages: Only if you don't like foreign cinema, and even then you should find something to like in these shorts!

...and a drug addict around to help him. ?The Opening Day of Close-Up? (1996) by Nanni Moretti An amusing little short about the owner of an independent cinema whose new film, an Iranian political drama, is opening while the rest of Italy are all going to see ?The Lion King? ?Gisèlle Kérozène? (1999) by Jan Kounen (Doberman, Blueberry) uses stop motion camera work to tell the story of modern day witches chasing each other on their broomsticks. Flying at full speed through concrete pathways. Very funny. ?Härlig Är Jorden (World of Glory)? (1991) by Roy Andersson (Songs From the Second Floor). This is very odd and the first one that didn?t really impress me, strange little film. ?L?Homme Sans Tete? (2003) by Juan Solanas (Unknown) gives us a short day in the life of a man without a head as he plans a night out. ?Koncert Zyczen...

Odeon cinema - The Quay

Advantages: modern, clean
Disadvantages: access by road only

...Although located about 2 miles from the city centre, The Quay is in a retail park based around the Odeon cinema, making ideal for city centre visitors without having to pay parking charges. Ideally located for access from the M8 (eastbound Kinning Park exit), and from the M77. 12 screens, from 89 to 279. Normally showing between 14 and 18 films, at various times. Adult tickets are £5, students/children are £3.50. No further discounts are currently offered (as at 01/06/02). After entering the foyer, a rather vast servery is available in the centre of the floor. You are permitted to bring your own food/drinks onto premises. No alcohol is permitted, and there are no bars/licence. I have made several visits to this cinema and been in most of the screens, from the small cosy 89 seater to the massive 279 seater. All films...
