Cisco IP Phone 7941
Advantages: ease of use, strong, durable, linking into GAL, remote managment and upgrades from call manager.
Disadvantages: Call quality is dependant on quality of the Network. Duplex settings, over utilized network, etc
...In my experience with the Cisco IP phone 7941, which has been for 5 years or so, has been nothing but pleasure. There features to link into AD and the ability to log onto any phone in the building and look up a user on the GAL on AD is very handy indeed. Call Transfer,Conference, Mute are the standard features.
The Phones will have to be set up to work with a call manager, Which is a centre point to manage the phones, and has the ability to record conversation for quality control, etc.
They have 2 options when it comes to powering these phones, on is to buy a power adapter, the other is to buy a Cisco Switch that can supply power to the phones via Ethernet.
They are strong and reliable, they have been used as call centre phones, and we know what kind of abuse they would be put through in that environment.
All in all, i would rate...

Basic Cisco Course
Advantages: More money @ work, More Knowledge
Disadvantages: !!!!!!
...I work in the Network Security Industry & work for a company called Equant (Who provide Global Network solutions & own the largest privately owned Network in the World), & was looking for a basic level Cisco course to achieve an acreditation.
The ICND course (Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices) is an ideal course to start. Although very Cisco orientated (as you could imagine), it doe sgive you a valuable basic knowledge of how the Cisco products interact with each other & other devices & networks (ie: Novell, which has recently dumped it's own IPX protocol, in favour of IP, this makes things easier as you can now deal with IP addressing & not just MAC addresses).
I went on an ICND course provided by a company called Getronics, based in Milton Keynes, I am now planning to take the Cisco CCNA exam, which is the first Certification...

Neat Netgear 5 port gigabit switch
Advantages: Cheap, reliable, simple to use
Disadvantages: None.
...I liked this switch so much, I bought two of them.
Netgear have a reputation for cheap and reliable networking equipment, and this 5 port unmanaged switch is no exception.
When I bought my two, they were retailing online for approx £35 each - but these days you should be able to get one for approx £25 (inc VAT.)
The switch is more or less the size of my hand (yes, I have big hands). With 5 ports on the back - all are auto-sensing, as is the gigabit standard, so you don't have to worry about crossover cables if you're daisy-chaining switches... The only other port on the back is for power, which is the usual "wall-wart" plug in transformer you get with most home networking equipment.
Given the switch is unmanaged, you can just plug desktop computers, laptops, XBOXes, network printers straight into the switch, and not worry...

Obsolete, but perfect for Cisco exams
Advantages: Very Cheap, with lots of features
Disadvantages: Will help with CCNA, but may stuggle with CCNP
...I bought one of these routers off ebay to help with my upcoming (Cisco) CCNA exam.
These are by no means cutting edge routers, and are obsolete now as they only support 10Mbps via their AUI (lan) port and support a limited amount of protocols.
The router itself has one AUI port, which when used with a transceiver can connect to either another router or a switch (at 10Mbps); 2 serial ports which can be configured with a routing protocol such as frame relay to connect to another switch or ISP data terminal equipment, a console port to configure the router itself, and an AUX port for modem connection.
Though well past it's sell by date, the switch is perfect to get to grips with Ciscos IOS (internetwork Operating System) and set up simple routed networks in conjuction with other routers and switches.
One thing to be aware of when buying...

To network or not to network????
Advantages: can get you a very well paid job!, world wide
Disadvantages: alot of info to take in, can get very confusing!
...First of all, What is Cisco?
Cisco is a networking course, which is split into four parts, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 1, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 2, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 3, and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 4. In each CCNA, there are around 15 online mini tests which helps you to pass the final exam. In my Cisco class, we aim to do 1 mini test a week, and on the final test for each CCNA part, we must obtain, 70% or more, for a pass.
Cisco in general teaches you how to connect two or more personal computers to each other and enable them to communicate, which can be used to share a internet connection, share printers, to send files, or even have a massive game, against all your mates! which is also known as a LAN party!
Types of networks
There are many types of networks...

CCNA New Version from March 2002
Advantages: Great starting point for advancement, Certification
Disadvantages: credible in industry, geek like...
...The CCNA changed earlier this year. Not a great deal of problems though.
A CCNA is the Cisco Certified Network Administrator which indicates that the holder of the certificate has passed a Cisco exam indicating that they can carry out the operation of an administrator in a Network IT function.
The actual exam is taken online via either prometric or VUE which costs about £90... The pass mark is a rather high 85 % give or take 1%...
As I said the exam changed recently, it used to be 65 questions and was quite straight forward...
Nowadays the Exam also consists of a performance related section on a Cisco router/switch whereby the screen represents an actual screen display from a switch and asks you to type commands etc instead of multiple choice type answers.
The exam is now 45 questions which are slightly harder and make...

Netgear GS105 5 Port Gigabit Switch
Advantages: Easy installation, small, sturdy, quiet, auto uplink
Disadvantages: Runs quite hot
...cables.
Operation
Compatibility: Most recent PC's have at least a single gigabit Ethernet port on them now. Now you can make use of it. Tested fine with Intel Pro/1000 MT cards and nVidia nForce cards
Noise
It contains no fans so operation is completely silent, however, as with all other Netgear switches, this unit gets quite hot. For peace of mind it would be best to keep it away from sources of heat (I tend to lay an old PII heatsink on the unit just to help with the cooling!)
Troubleshooting
The LED indicators provide you with all the information you could possibly need to help diagnose any connectivity problems - not that you should have any
Conclusion
Very fast, reliable equipment.
With prices for gigabit equipment coming down, now is a great time to upgrade...

A Cisco by any other name.
Advantages: Cheap, instalation, WPA
Disadvantages: Plastic, some config settings, Reliablity
...In the depths of London I had a problem, that being I have one DSL line and three computers all stand alone so the options open to me were either CAT 5 my home or try this new fangled magical technology called Wireless? And so it began.
I went on line and found this delightful looking product the WAP54G and being from Linksys meant it was also from Cisco and you can not get a Cisco wireless Access point for under £50 so I went for it.
The Specifications of the Linksys Had everything that I needed
B+G compatible in the 2.4 frequency category
Security includes 256 encryption, WEP, WPA, WPA -RADIUS
So with this I went off to work on installing it.
Firstly I would like to say what a user friendly set up this Access Point (AP) has all you have to do is connect to your PC network port with a normal network cable run the CD, Run...

The speedy GS605
Advantages: Looks great, performs well, easily installed
Disadvantages: Gigabit networking is unavoidably expensive
...Netgears GS605 offers a stylish alternative to having gigabit Ethernet in the home. I spent a lot of time looking for a retailer who stocked this item and eventually I ended up shopping with MicroDirect after Misco sent me a GS105 (the GS605's business brother) in error. I'm quite fond of Netgears home networking equipment and my entire home network currently uses solely Netgear products.
The GS605 is the same size as all Netgears current line of home products that feature the platinum white casing. The product I obtained was silently different than advertised in that it had a silver reflective lining around the front panel instead of the traditional white used on all of the other platinum white products. The GS605 is also considerably heavier than both the DG834 router and the WG602 access point, most likely due to a greater...
