Cisco IP Phone 7941

Advantages: ease of use, strong, durable, linking into GAL, remote managment and upgrades from call manager.
Disadvantages: Call quality is dependant on quality of the Network. Duplex settings, over utilized network, etc

...In my experience with the Cisco IP phone 7941, which has been for 5 years or so, has been nothing but pleasure. There features to link into AD and the ability to log onto any phone in the building and look up a user on the GAL on AD is very handy indeed. Call Transfer,Conference, Mute are the standard features. The Phones will have to be set up to work with a call manager, Which is a centre point to manage the phones, and has the ability to record conversation for quality control, etc. They have 2 options when it comes to powering these phones, on is to buy a power adapter, the other is to buy a Cisco Switch that can supply power to the phones via Ethernet. They are strong and reliable, they have been used as call centre phones, and we know what kind of abuse they would be put through in that environment. All in all, i would rate...

Basic Cisco Course

Advantages: More money @ work, More Knowledge
Disadvantages: !!!!!!

...I work in the Network Security Industry & work for a company called Equant (Who provide Global Network solutions & own the largest privately owned Network in the World), & was looking for a basic level Cisco course to achieve an acreditation. The ICND course (Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices) is an ideal course to start. Although very Cisco orientated (as you could imagine), it doe sgive you a valuable basic knowledge of how the Cisco products interact with each other & other devices & networks (ie: Novell, which has recently dumped it's own IPX protocol, in favour of IP, this makes things easier as you can now deal with IP addressing & not just MAC addresses). I went on an ICND course provided by a company called Getronics, based in Milton Keynes, I am now planning to take the Cisco CCNA exam, which is the first Certification...

Review of Cisco - ICND Course

Obsolete, but perfect for Cisco exams

Advantages: Very Cheap, with lots of features
Disadvantages: Will help with CCNA, but may stuggle with CCNP

...I bought one of these routers off ebay to help with my upcoming (Cisco) CCNA exam. These are by no means cutting edge routers, and are obsolete now as they only support 10Mbps via their AUI (lan) port and support a limited amount of protocols. The router itself has one AUI port, which when used with a transceiver can connect to either another router or a switch (at 10Mbps); 2 serial ports which can be configured with a routing protocol such as frame relay to connect to another switch or ISP data terminal equipment, a console port to configure the router itself, and an AUX port for modem connection. Though well past it's sell by date, the switch is perfect to get to grips with Ciscos IOS (internetwork Operating System) and set up simple routed networks in conjuction with other routers and switches. One thing to be aware of when buying...

Cisco IP-Phone 7941

Advantages: works well, has all features expected from a modern phone, easy user interface
Disadvantages: head phones are very expensive

...I have this phone on my desk and it is really excellent. I don't have any problems. It looks like new and it is used every working day. The user interface is very easy and intuitive. The phone has a small light which is red when the phone rings. This is great becuase all my colleagues have the same phone and sometimes we don't know which phone rings. In addition it is possible to change the ring tone. The display has big letters, you may see what was the last missed calls. You may forward the call to an other number. Nothing is missing - all functions are there. I didn't manage to create my own phone book but maybe because this is an IP phone. The phone fell on the floor more than one time and it is still working. The speakerphone works well and you may set the volume and save the settings. There are some variants with a colour...

To network or not to network????

Advantages: can get you a very well paid job!, world wide
Disadvantages: alot of info to take in, can get very confusing!

...First of all, What is Cisco? Cisco is a networking course, which is split into four parts, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 1, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 2, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 3, and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 4. In each CCNA, there are around 15 online mini tests which helps you to pass the final exam. In my Cisco class, we aim to do 1 mini test a week, and on the final test for each CCNA part, we must obtain, 70% or more, for a pass. Cisco in general teaches you how to connect two or more personal computers to each other and enable them to communicate, which can be used to share a internet connection, share printers, to send files, or even have a massive game, against all your mates! which is also known as a LAN party! Types of networks There are many types of networks...

catalysts speed up reactions yes ?

Advantages: easy setup ( if know what doing )
Disadvantages: easy to break.

...Another entry onto the cisco scene is the catalyst 4948 switch. 48 ports with four G-bic options for either fiber optics or standard RJ45 cables. setting up: this is made quite simple by the console port on the back. Using a program such as hyperterminal willl allow you to access the flash drive, and change the settings ease of setup: quite an easy switch to setup, it has the usual kind of cisco program, with the easy option to upgrade the firmware/ software on it. To setup a Vlan, you use the configuration terminal within. (conft) Breakabiltity: as it says on the box really: fragile. It can stand the usual bumps and scratches with its metal casing, but if dropped will usually break one of the ports. Flashing: using the console port, you can set it up to flash the firmware, and put either an upgrade or downgrade...

CCNA New Version from March 2002

Advantages: Great starting point for advancement, Certification
Disadvantages: credible in industry, geek like...

...The CCNA changed earlier this year. Not a great deal of problems though. A CCNA is the Cisco Certified Network Administrator which indicates that the holder of the certificate has passed a Cisco exam indicating that they can carry out the operation of an administrator in a Network IT function. The actual exam is taken online via either prometric or VUE which costs about £90... The pass mark is a rather high 85 % give or take 1%... As I said the exam changed recently, it used to be 65 questions and was quite straight forward... Nowadays the Exam also consists of a performance related section on a Cisco router/switch whereby the screen represents an actual screen display from a switch and asks you to type commands etc instead of multiple choice type answers. The exam is now 45 questions which are slightly harder and make...

Review of Cisco Certified Network Associate

A Cisco by any other name.

Advantages: Cheap, instalation, WPA
Disadvantages: Plastic, some config settings, Reliablity

...In the depths of London I had a problem, that being I have one DSL line and three computers all stand alone so the options open to me were either CAT 5 my home or try this new fangled magical technology called Wireless? And so it began. I went on line and found this delightful looking product the WAP54G and being from Linksys meant it was also from Cisco and you can not get a Cisco wireless Access point for under £50 so I went for it. The Specifications of the Linksys Had everything that I needed B+G compatible in the 2.4 frequency category Security includes 256 encryption, WEP, WPA, WPA -RADIUS So with this I went off to work on installing it. Firstly I would like to say what a user friendly set up this Access Point (AP) has all you have to do is connect to your PC network port with a normal network cable run the CD, Run...

Excellent Course

Advantages: Qualification at end
Disadvantages: More work

...I have surrently undetaken the Cisco Certified netowking course and I would like to recomment it to any one else who may find it to be beneficail t there career. The Cisco course is very informative and if you have an interest in netwoking you may enjoy it. You wil learn all the basics in networking such as topologies and ethernet, tcp/ip etc that is very interesting. The course cost £1500 but the offer has been given to me at my college at no extra cost. At the end of the course you are given a certified netwoking qualification that may be useful in the future. The course is very intersting and I recomment it to others....

Review of Cisco Certified Networking Course

Well worth the extra work

Advantages: superb knowledge and end qualification
Disadvantages: extra workload

...As any student taking the new a and AS levels will know, it is a huge workload. The average hours of school work has risen dramatically, so if you were offered a course for 3 hours a week AFTER school or college hours, you may be inclined to object! Cisco systems launched their project last year, and my college is envolved fully. It would cost the average member of the public £1,500 to take this course, but it is free for us. The course is based around computer networking and is split up into semesters that are split up into chapters. After you have read the extensive readings on each chapter, and taking the quiz you are able to take the chapter test. The pass rate for each test is 70%, but tests can be retaken! There are 16 tests in the first semester, and by then you have been through all the stages in developing a network, cabling...
