Obsolete, but perfect for Cisco exams
Advantages: Very Cheap, with lots of features
Disadvantages: Will help with CCNA, but may stuggle with CCNP
...I bought one of these routers off ebay to help with my upcoming (Cisco) CCNA exam.
These are by no means cutting edge routers, and are obsolete now as they only support 10Mbps via their AUI (lan) port and support a limited amount of protocols.
The router itself has one AUI port, which when used with a transceiver can connect to either another router or a switch (at 10Mbps); 2 serial ports which can be configured with a routing protocol such as frame relay to connect to another switch or ISP data terminal equipment, a console port to configure the router itself, and an AUX port for modem connection.
Though well past it's sell by date, the switch is perfect to get to grips with Ciscos IOS (internetwork Operating System) and set up simple routed networks in conjuction with other routers and switches.
One thing to be aware of when buying...

Cisco IP Phone 7941
Advantages: ease of use, strong, durable, linking into GAL, remote managment and upgrades from call manager.
Disadvantages: Call quality is dependant on quality of the Network. Duplex settings, over utilized network, etc
...In my experience with the Cisco IP phone 7941, which has been for 5 years or so, has been nothing but pleasure. There features to link into AD and the ability to log onto any phone in the building and look up a user on the GAL on AD is very handy indeed. Call Transfer,Conference, Mute are the standard features.
The Phones will have to be set up to work with a call manager, Which is a centre point to manage the phones, and has the ability to record conversation for quality control, etc.
They have 2 options when it comes to powering these phones, on is to buy a power adapter, the other is to buy a Cisco Switch that can supply power to the phones via Ethernet.
They are strong and reliable, they have been used as call centre phones, and we know what kind of abuse they would be put through in that environment.
All in all, i would rate...

Basic Cisco Course
Advantages: More money @ work, More Knowledge
Disadvantages: !!!!!!
...on the Cisco ladder.
The course contained relavant material & labs to last 5 days & was very informative.
Anyone who is working or looking to work in the ISP, Internet area, should consider this course, as Cisco hold a large chunk of the Router business....

Linksys's Lightning fast wireless router
Advantages: Fast speeds, Reliable, Stylish
Disadvantages: I had wireless problems, Gets a bit warm, no restart router option in config
...more due to Windows or the USB dongle as just unplugging and plugging it back in or disconnecting the wireless and reconnecting resolved connection issues.
SUPPORT
User Manual and firmware upgrades can be downloaded from the Linksys website. There weren?t any upgrades available for me when I last checked but Linksys are a big company so I would imagine they would release upgrades if they discover problems with the router or if they just want to add new functionality in the future.
SUMMARY
PROS
- Easy to configure
- Supports ADSL2 and provides good speeds
- Fast wireless speeds
- Good brand
- Generally quite reliable
- Good range
CONS
- Gets a bit warm
- No restart router option in router configuration
- Picks up dust
- Wireless was unreliable for PCs
VERDICT
Linksys is now a division of Cisco so one can expect...

Router minefield!!!
Advantages: ease of setup,reliable connection
Disadvantages: not the fastest on the market
...When looking to go wireless in the computer world it is an absolute minefield when it comes to wireless routers/modems. I sat at my latop(tethered to the telephone socket with wires) scouring google for write ups about this router and that router when i came across this one. Now this is rated as being the best selling router/modem in the UK and has been for some time. I think i paid around £40 from ebuyer.com. I chose it because of the fact its reasonably priced. Its a good trustworthy brand and it seemed to come up to scratch on speed.
Upon opening the box the installation was very simple indeed. I just followed the instructions that came with the router and hey prsto i was wireless on my laptop.Software is easy to install and self explanatory. Its not the fastest band of router on the market but for what i needed it was ample...

Belting Belkin Router!
Advantages: Fairly easy to set up, easy to use, reliable, looks good.
Disadvantages: Bandwidth Innacurate.
...We'd wanted to upgrade our router for a while to cope with Rich playing on his Xbox online mainly as we kept getting lag, which was especially apparent if I was also browsing the net (which I generally was) even to the point of Rich being disconnected mid game. He was getting annoyed with it so when we saw this router on offer at ebuyer.com for £69.99 (but has since gone back up to its previous price of £89.99); I jumped at the chance to get it and now we have it, I thought it was worth writing a review about, so here we are!
My review will be based on my experience of the router, and not a full technological break down of what it is capable of etc as that is readily available online from the manufacturer and would probably bore most people to tears anyway.
The first thing I notice when opening the box is how big the router is...

Low Cost Enterprise Security Firewall Router
Advantages: Powerful, Easy to configure, Good support, Low cost
Disadvantages: Needs extra 'modem' for each broadband Connection, Occasional reboots required
...upgrade
- Requires a Draytek Vigor 100/110 or other router set up in a non-NAT configuration
VERDICT
I do not like the fact that you need to purchase a non-NAT router in conjunction with the 2950 for the setup and I could have done without the occasional problems but overall, I feel the 2950 is a very good router/firewall. It?s quite cheap for an Enterprise level router, especially when compared to CISCO products in the same price range, which would probably not even have the VPN function as that would most likely require an extra box to be purchased just for the VPN functionality. Otherwise, a much more expensive CISCO router with the function would be required, which would probably cost £1,000+, making the £320 for the 2950 and the £100 for the two Vigor 100s (for use with two ADSL broadband lines) seem like peanuts. However, I see...

Great Multimedia Wireless Router from Belkin
Advantages: Reliable, Fast, Easy to configure, Lots of features, USB for sharing drives
Disadvantages: Bit expensive, Not full speed with every machine
...INTRO
The Belkin N+ router is one of the higher end (consumer) wireless modem router offerings from Belkin. It cost me £85 from PC World, but can probably be found for a bit less if you shop online. The Cable version costs a little less. Reason I bought this one was because two PCs in the house with wireless cards kept losing the wireless connection when I was using a Linksys router (my own PCs / laptops were fine though!). I replaced that with a second hand Belkin, which worked fine but unfortunately, a power cut killed the wireless on it. Liking the performance of that cheaper Belkin router, I decided to stick with Belkin and get this one!
DESIGN
The router looks very stylish and stands up tall rather than laid down flat. It doesn?t appear to have been designed to be laid down flat like many other routers, which may...

Super router
Advantages: A great way to network up your house and share the internet
Disadvantages: A pain to set up with cabling
...For a family to own a PC at home is almost second nature today. To own 2 or 3 different computers is nothing unusual. But powering all 3 with its own Modem and internet connection can prove costly and much congestion on the phone line.
But now the answer to your problems is here. A router and modem all in one that can distribute internett access to all parts of the house from one box. The Netgear router.
Ideal for both home and small office use, the Netgear ADSL modem router allows broadband speed internet access for up to 4 people.
OK, so what is it?
Basically it is a switch that splits one Internet connection between 4 computers. Imagine The router to act like a glass of milk with 4 straws coming out of it. 4 people are sharing the same glass of milk. The same as 4 people are sharing one internet connection but each one is...
