To harden a router is to render it more heavily defended and more difficult to attack. Because routers (by definition) serve as points of entry into your network, it makes sense to devote extra effort to their security. Hardening Cisco Routers shows how to make adjustments to the configurations of routers from Cisco Systems to improve their resistance to attack, particularly external attack. This is essentially a book of specialised Internetwork Operating System (IOS) commands, as well as explanations of their behaviour. It'll appeal to the router administrator--employed either by an organisation's internal network staff, an outside consultancy, or a service provider--who wants to know which IOS commands he or she should add to routers' configuration files to tighten their security without a lot of hassle. The great thing about this book is that you can approach it in either of two ways. If you just want to clamp down on your routers' security weaknesses as soon as possible, you can begin with the checklists at the end of each chapter (each of which focuses on a particular area, such as SMTP) or the big one in an appendix, which is comprehensive. These checklists include both "how" and "why" information, as exemplified by "Disable ICMP broadcasts with the no ip directed-broadcast command". If you want more information on the big picture, or want to prepare for a specific kind of attack, read the individual chapters for detailed advice on how to set IOS to behave as you want. --David WallTopics covered: Internetwork Operating System (IOS) commands you can use to protect Cisco Systems routers from a variety of attacks. Specialised sections deal with security assessment, auditing, access control, privileges, optional services and the legal importance of your login banners' contents. ... less

CASTING A LITTLE LIGHT ON THE MATTER-CISCO CEILING LIGHT
Advantages: Reasonably priced. Provides good light.Look good for the price.
Disadvantages: Lots of bulbs to replace
...on my daughter's return from school, left on my table. (I am not pleased!) And I need decent lighting for using the P.C.
Our previous lights with the three bulbs weren't adequate, even before one of the bulb surrounds broke on the light fitting in the living room area, and so we were down to two lights on one, and then the same thing recently happened to the light in the dining area. This made the room, even with lamps and display cabinet lighting, very dismal indeed. I thought I had better choose new lights quickly.
I looked online at various sites including B & Q, British Homes Stores, a couple of Mill shops, and then dear old Argos. After a good look I decided that I was most likely to get what I wanted from Argos. I shortlisted a few from there, and then finally decided that the Cisco five light ceiling fitting would best suit...

Basic Cisco Course
Advantages: More money @ work, More Knowledge
Disadvantages: !!!!!!
...I work in the Network Security Industry & work for a company called Equant (Who provide Global Network solutions & own the largest privately owned Network in the World), & was looking for a basic level Cisco course to achieve an acreditation.
The ICND course (Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices) is an ideal course to start. Although very Cisco orientated (as you could imagine), it doe sgive you a valuable basic knowledge of how the Cisco products interact with each other & other devices & networks (ie: Novell, which has recently dumped it's own IPX protocol, in favour of IP, this makes things easier as you can now deal with IP addressing & not just MAC addresses).
I went on an ICND course provided by a company called Getronics, based in Milton Keynes, I am now planning to take the Cisco CCNA exam, which is the first Certification...

Obsolete, but perfect for Cisco exams
Advantages: Very Cheap, with lots of features
Disadvantages: Will help with CCNA, but may stuggle with CCNP
...I bought one of these routers off ebay to help with my upcoming (Cisco) CCNA exam.
These are by no means cutting edge routers, and are obsolete now as they only support 10Mbps via their AUI (lan) port and support a limited amount of protocols.
The router itself has one AUI port, which when used with a transceiver can connect to either another router or a switch (at 10Mbps); 2 serial ports which can be configured with a routing protocol such as frame relay to connect to another switch or ISP data terminal equipment, a console port to configure the router itself, and an AUX port for modem connection.
Though well past it's sell by date, the switch is perfect to get to grips with Ciscos IOS (internetwork Operating System) and set up simple routed networks in conjuction with other routers and switches.
One thing to be aware of when buying...
