Cisco IP Phone 7941

Advantages: ease of use, strong, durable, linking into GAL, remote managment and upgrades from call manager.
Disadvantages: Call quality is dependant on quality of the Network. Duplex settings, over utilized network, etc

...In my experience with the Cisco IP phone 7941, which has been for 5 years or so, has been nothing but pleasure. There features to link into AD and the ability to log onto any phone in the building and look up a user on the GAL on AD is very handy indeed. Call Transfer,Conference, Mute are the standard features. The Phones will have to be set up to work with a call manager, Which is a centre point to manage the phones, and has the ability to record conversation for quality control, etc. They have 2 options when it comes to powering these phones, on is to buy a power adapter, the other is to buy a Cisco Switch that can supply power to the phones via Ethernet. Obsolete, but perfect for Cisco exams

Advantages: Very Cheap, with lots of features
Disadvantages: Will help with CCNA, but may stuggle with CCNP

...I bought one of these routers off ebay to help with my upcoming (Cisco) CCNA exam. These are by no means cutting edge routers, and are obsolete now as they only support 10Mbps via their AUI (lan) port and support a limited amount of protocols. The router itself has one AUI port, which when used with a transceiver can connect to either another router or a switch (at 10Mbps); 2 serial ports which can be configured with a routing protocol such as frame relay to connect to another switch or ISP data terminal equipment, a console port to configure the router itself, and an AUX port for modem connection. Though well past it's sell by date, the switch is perfect to get to grips with Ciscos IOS (internetwork Operating System) and set up simple routed networks in conjuction with other routers and switches. Very fast, very impressed.

Advantages: Fast transfer rate, reliable

...The Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Adapter came built in to my pc, and I wouldn't want to replace it. It provides a fast, reliable connection. Was easy to connect to and set up a connection with other pc's, laptop's, etc. Great for gamers or business' that require wired link up between machines, servers or both. Felt like the data transfer was instant, so was perfect for backing up data from one machine onto another Driver's are very easy to get hold of, just download them straight from the manufacturers website. Which also has very good support, if any problems should arise. Very fast if needing updating due to new driver releases. I would highly recommend this ethenet adapter to anyone. Especially gamers or small businesses....

Neat Netgear 5 port gigabit switch

Advantages: Cheap, reliable, simple to use

...about anything other than configuring the devices themselves. I would recommend this switch to anyone who has a few machines on their home or small office network, that way you can upgrade the speed critical machines on your network to gigabit speeds. I bought my two to allow me to use one with my media server and file server, and the other in my living room to connect the laptop, XBOX and so on... By having a gigabit switch, it allowed my machines with gigabit ethernet cards to network at full speed with each other, so that transferring video and large files between them was not constrained to hundred megabit speeds you find with most home and home office networks. I think the 5 port switch is pitched at the right price, and has the right number of ports for the average home user who will usually have one or two computers and a games...

To network or not to network????

Advantages: can get you a very well paid job!, world wide
Disadvantages: alot of info to take in, can get very confusing!

..., but the main two are LANS (local area network) and WANS (wide area network), and they are exactly what the names tell you. LANS, are local area networks, which are used in one organisation, for example a secondary school, like the one i went to! WANS, are wide area networks, which are the same as LANS just on a larger scale, between to buildings, or oganisations. The best example of a WAN, is the internet, as its currently the biggest WAN! In the Cisco course, you will learn all about networks, how to create your own using expert equipment, like routers, switch's and hubs. About me I went to a 6th form where i studied this course! some parts of it are very boring, and alot of information is needed to be taken in! but overall it is worth it for computer lovers! i have completed all CCNA's now! and currently looking for a job in this...

So, how did I end buying this? On a Tom's Hardware review I saw this item, which has the ability of being an ethernet disk and an USB disk at the same time, which at the moment, was an innovation. With such a configuration the disk can be accesible to ethernet users even at [theoric] gigabit speeds and at the same time being accessed by a local user through USB connection. ...I have surrently undetaken the Cisco Certified netowking course and I would like to recomment it to any one else who may find it to be beneficail t there career. The Cisco course is very informative and if you have an interest in netwoking you may enjoy it. You wil learn all the basics in networking such as topologies and ethernet, tcp/ip etc that is very interesting. The course cost £1500 but the offer has been given to me at my college at no extra cost. At the end of the course you are given a certified netwoking qualification that may be useful in the future. The course is very intersting and I recomment it to others....
