I don't do Sprouts but I do do Brussels

Advantages: Brilliant location, inexpensive, good concept
Disadvantages: Slightly under-equipped

...This year, ditching the sprouts and instead opting for Brussels alone, we headed to Belgium for Christmas. Since (a) there were 3 of us, and (b) we feared that restaurants and bars would be closed over the festive period, it was decided that an apartment would be preferable to a hotel room, and so in about September we booked to stay at the Citadines Aparthotel Sainte Catherine in the centre of Brussels. ~~ The concept ~~ I have stayed in other aparthotels before, but only in beach resorts on Spanish islands, so the Citadines approach was something new for me. LOCATION AND GETTING THERE The Citadines Holborn is literally a stone’s throw from Holborn Tube station. Leave the station via the High Holborn exit, and you can see the hotel across the road, next door to the Pizza Express restaurant. I actually made the trip from Euston by taxi and this cost me about £6. There are plenty of bus routes which pass close by, and if you travel by car, the hotel has its own car park – although this will cost you £13 per day. However, we did realize we were in a tourist area, and things might be more expensive here than in the local stores in smaller towns. Besides, the fashions were new and fresh - and if our budget and suitcase space had permitted, I might have plunged right in. ...should be luggage space is taken up by vending machines. Coridors are constantly blocked by trolleys, making trips to the toilet difficult if not impossible. So traveling first class does make an appreciable difference. Unfortunately there was no food on the four and a half hour journey on the TGV on the outward journey. But apart from that the journey was fine. Once I arrived in Marseille, it was easy and stress free getting onto the metro and making my way to the hotel, even though it was rush hour. Try saying the same thing about London Underground. I stayed at Citadines at Prado Castillane. They call it an Aparthotel, because it is self catering. They have two types of apartments.   Luxury Pads At Luverly Prices

...with white linen (continental quilt not sheets), a chest of drawers and a big wardrobe. The bathroom featured a full-sized bath (very rare) and a good power shower, complete with a glass screen rather than a nasty curtain. The only problem with the glass screen was that it made a horrendous squeaking noise, which would have awoken the dead, let alone the people next door or upstairs. LIKES AND DISLIKES The main drawback with this hotel is the isolation. It?s quite likely that you won?t meet any staff upon arrival, and there is no bar to go and lounge in, nor is there any room service. This was a bit of a nuisance for me because I didn?t have time to get anything to drink or eat in the apartment.
