A review on my 1995 1.9TD Citroen ZX Mephis
Advantages: Economical to run and cheap to buy. Fairly fast. Good engine. Reliable. "Biodiesel ready".
Disadvantages: A little noisy. Not fashionable.
...~ Why I bought the 1.9TD Citroen ZX ~
I bought this car because I do over 20,000 miles a year, and thought that I could save a fair bit of money by switching from a Petrol to a Diesel. I posted on a forum of car enthusiasts, asking what I should go for. I said I had £750 to spend on a Diesel and wanted reliability and economy above all else.
The responses were all on the same lines: buy a Peugeot 306 with an XUD9 engine, or a Citroen ZX with the same engine.
I bought a Citroen ZX in the end because it was cheaper than buying a Peugeot - the Citroens don't look anywhere near as good, and are therefore less sought after.
~ How much did I pay? ~
I paid about £700 for my Citroen ZX with 100k on the clock. This was a bit over the going rate, but I'd called up several other adverts for cheaper cars first, and they had all gone...

Skoda Fabia 1.9tdi estate
Advantages: Price, economical, comfortable, fast acceleration, vast storage space
Disadvantages: None
...I bought my first Skoda 5 years ago when I retired from my full time occupation. I had intended to buy a decent second hand model but on visiting the dealer, I was so impressed with the estate version of the 1.9tdi Fabia, that I took the plunge.
Having since had 100% reliability, economical fuel consumption , the added bonus of quick off the mark acceleration for an exceptionally value for money price, I am glad I took the plunge as I have not regretted my choice of car.
Capacious boot space that takes all my golf clubs, trolley and more without having to lower the rear seats is also something to appreciate.
I traded that in 3 years ago for the same model but with added extras such as cd player, air con, alloy wheels at what appeared to be very little price difference from the first one I bought.
The ability to gain quick...

2002 VW Passat 1.9TDi 130bhp
Advantages: Spacious, frugal, good performance.
Disadvantages: Looks aren't very exciting.
...I drive a 2002 (52 plate) VW Passat 1.9 TDi 130bhp for work and it has been very reliable and dependable. The engine is by far the best bit about this car - over 40mpg even when driving swiftly and very quiet whether cruising on the motorway or driving around town.
The model i drive is reasonably well equipped - it has a good air conditioning system, electric mirrors, windows, sunroof etc. The only extra i would have added is a factory CD player.
The seats are comfortable on long motorway drives and the road holding is good for a car of this size and weight.
Interior is spacious enough to accomodate 4 adults comfortably - 5 at a push. The boot is also very spacious.
I have also driven the 115bhp model and would thoroughly recommend buying the 130bhp model insead. The fuel economy isn't noticably different yet the 130bhp model is far...

Laguna 1.9dCi Hatchback
Advantages: Safe
Disadvantages: Uncomfortable
...I drive a reasonable number of miles in my work (around 3000/month) and have recently had the opportunity to sample several cars in this class. The Laguna has been my least favourite for a number of reasons.
Firstly, I have been driving this particular vehicle for around 5 months. It is a hire car, and I am unsure of the trim level - there are no other markings on the car other than 1.9dCi. It is an up to date model - 05 plate.
My main issue is comfort. I am just over 6ft & I find that the door handle is constantly rubbing my knee. This sounds minor, but when you are in a car for a couple of hours it becomes a huge annoyance. I have tried every adjustment but have yet to find a comfortable seating position. Also note that boot space is less than I expected.
Another area worth mentioning is the sun visor. When this is down, it...

Alfa Romeo 147 1.9 JTD
Advantages: Engine, Looks, Leather, Options on my car
Disadvantages: Safety, Reliability Record, Dealership Record
...Alfa Romeo 147 1.9 JTD 3dr Lusso
You probably just don?t understand Alfa's and until you sit in one-you never will?
Just bought an Alfa Romeo 147 1.9 JTD 3dr Lusso and on first impressions I?m delighted. It?s Navy Blue in Colour which sets the car off great against the Cream Leather, its a top of the range model and comes with SAT NAV, Cruise Control, Telephone, full heated Leather Upholstery, trip computer, 16inch Alloy wheels etc. The options are great, although not a requirement for everyone-however I would recommend the leather upholstery as a MUST its fantastic.
I test drove many cars before buying, yet decided on the Alfa 147, because it put the biggest smile on my face, it was the nicest car to sit in and felt the best to drive by a long way. The Golf mk4 GTi felt its age, and although the Golf mk5 1.6s that I...

1994 1.9TD SX Hatchback
Advantages: Economical, spacious, comfy cruiser
Disadvantages: Expensive to repair, noisy
...with improvements being made all the time, the new C5 has the latest version so Citroen must still think its a good thing! Keep an eye on the fluid level, I check mine once a week. You should also run the car through its 3 different ride heights once a week to keep the seals lubricated to stop them cracking and having fluid leak away. I keep a supply of this fluid (it's a special mineral based hydraulic fluid - available from halfords and the like) in the car for emergencies.
If looked after they will go on and on for ever, my Xantia has done a lot of miles, (I like to use equivalents) currently 9 times round the equator. in another 10,000 miles it will have travelled to the moon. so for a car built in 1994 with 228,000 miles on the clock and still going strong it can't have been a bad buy.
To summarise,
large comfy car, cruises easily at motorway...

The Citroen Saxo.
Advantages: Quirky. Fun. French.
Disadvantages: Creaks and shakes. Slow. Unsafe.
..."AAAhhh, it's a little Citroen Saxo."
Yes, for about a year now I have been driving around in my little Saxo, and I now feel qualified to tell you something about it. This review, I'm afraid, comes four years too late, as the Saxo went out of production in the year 2000. It has since been replaced by a more 21st century, bubble-like car, the C3. There no question that the C3 is the nicer of the two, with its chic French curves, however at £9.000 it's not to everyone's liking.
And so we come to the humble Saxo. Weighing in at 805kg the Saxo is very small, so obviously would not be suitable for big families, or indeed for people with big legs which invariably get crushed if they sit in the back seats. An avid Saxo-spotter, I have found they come in a spectrum of colours, the most offensive and most striking being bright yellow. It...

MY CITROEN SYNERGIE
Advantages: spacious, easy seat removal, good view
Disadvantages: expensive french parts, large 'blind spots'
...electric windows all round. It has remote locking and alarm setting.
The power steering is effortless.
The only disadvantages are the high cost of some spare parts and the fact that the side vision is not too good i.e. there are large blind spots which necessitate looking over your shoulder sometimes to check before manoevering.
These cars hold their price quite well.
The new model which replaced this is the Citroen C8. I would love to be able to afford on of those!...

Citroen Xantia 1.9 diesel N reg
Advantages: comfort, economy, style
Disadvantages: none
...I am surprised to read the poor review by Degsy. I have owned a Xantia 1.9D N reg for nearly 2 years now which I bought from a friend who had run it for about 2 years himself. During the time my friend had it he twice drove to Italy and back, the second time towing a medium sized caravan. There were no problems. Since I have had it, I drove all round the south of England and through all Wales and back to Manchester on just over one tank of diesel and the car just went nicely all the way. Last year it sailed through its MoT test requiring only one rear bulb to be replaced. It is about to go for this year's test and I am only aware of one low tyre to replace and flexi brake hoses at the front, and wiper blades. Very cheap and reliable is what I would call that car. It has never failed to start first time and has never let me down. I use...
