This review, I'm afraid, comes four years too late, as the Saxo went out of production in the year 2000. It has since been replaced by a more 21st century, bubble-like car, the C3. There no question that the C3 is the nicer of the two, with its chic French curves, however at £9.000 it's not to everyone's liking. And so we come to the humble Saxo. Weighing in at 805kg the Saxo is very small, so obviously would not be suitable for big families, or indeed for people with big legs which invariably get crushed if they sit in the back seats. ...Myself and my son recently visited our local Citroen dealer because we organised a test drive on a 1.1i Saxo First. This was because my son is currently looking for a new car to replace his very reliable but ageing current motor, a Citroen AX. The Saxo has always attracted my son with its good looks and decent performance, but interestingly enough he was interested in the smallest engine option of the First. There are several reasons for this, all unbelievably and unusually sensible coming form my son!! Firstly the 1124cc engine keeps insurance costs down and also it is very light on the drink when it comes to the petrol pump. Disadvantages: Main dealer prices and customer service

My only other gripe has not been the fault of the car but of the main dealer - avoid them like the plague. £50 to replace a bolt in the sunroof (!) and £120 for a service! And there customer service is poor too. I have since found a small citroen-approved garage which is great and very cheap. My 27,000 mile service only cost £40. Overall, a great car!...

citroen zsara picasso space space space

Advantages: space and easy to drive
Disadvantages: personally haven't got one

...i brought a citroen xsara picasso just after my baby was born as my other car wasnt big enough to get anything else but the pushchair in the boot. i used to have a renault clio which i loved and i was worried about driving a bigger car but there was no need as a picasso is easier to drive and has loads of room in the front and back easy to put the seats down to create more room lots of drinks holders in front and back and i the doors so hopefully no sticky car food trays in the back for the kids easy to use controls and you can view loads of information about how many miles you can do to the petrol already in the tank your average speed how many miles left until a service is due a/c electric windows and mirrors definatley a family car and since purchasing this car i have realised how poular it is and a few of my friends have one too...

I purchased this car in September 2000 (X-reg). I chose the colour Poseidon Blue (Metalic). At the time Citroen were giving a years free insurance away with the car, which as a young male driver this I found was invaluable. The basic on the road cost of the car was around £7200 after the cash back deal. (£800 pounds at the time). With a 1.1i petrol engine (1124cc) you will find the Saxo usually does around 45 miles per gallon even when you give it some stick. Also having such a small engine the car passes for reduced road tax, which is a big bonus! Inside the Forte model you will find a CD player with four speakers (2 in front and 2 in back). Advantages: Spacious, big boot, storage space, has its own shopping trolley
Disadvantages: Reflection from angle of windscreen, digital dashboard.

The Citroen C3...not just an old persons car!

Advantages: Looks good and is easy to drive.
Disadvantages: questionable rear legroom.

...My search for my first car was an interesting journey through a variety of rubbish rovers and bottom of the range fiestas which ended in me and my dad finding a pearl of a car in my Citroen C3 1.1i petrol which had less than 6000 miles on the clock and was only £5500. After test driving fords and rovers the C3 was a breath of fresh air, you didn't feel like you were about to fall apart, or that you were driving a cardboard box, it felt like a well made, if cheaply made car, that would be easy for me to learn to drive in.
