...This year my company increased the size of the list of cars which we are allowed to choose from. In addition to the usual Fords and Vauxhalls, we were able to get Peugeots, VW’s and Citroens. I decided to go for the Citroen C5, 2.0 SX estate as I do like a decent sized car with enough load space to get all the kids toys, bikes etc. in. I’ve had it for about 12 weeks now and have covered just over 1500 miles so I think I can make a reasonable assessment of it. OVERALL LOOK OF THE CAR It is very streamlined and looks good in the silver colour I opted for. It has aluminium roof bars which are, for the silver version, as near as makes no odds to being body coloured. Most people comment on how large it is when they first see it (stop it) but at 4756 mm long it is an inch shorter than the equivalent Mondeo estate. It also gives...

Citroen Xsara 2.0HDi estate

Advantages: Great engine for power and economy, massive boot, bargain 2nd-hand.
Disadvantages: Dull interior, dull image.

Contrary to Citroen's reputation this car has been extremely reliable over the last 5+ years I have owned it, and the dealer's been fair too. Generally underrated, I have driven far newer cars that don't appear to have progressed much at all. Dirt cheap 2nd hand. The best bits are: The strong and economical engine. It shows a clean pair of heels to plenty of surprised Audi/Merc/BMW drivers and I get 40mpg around town, and over 60mpg on motorways. The nice smooth ride, far better than more modern hard-riding cars. It handles well despite the softer ride and the steering has some feel to it. We decide that the Mondeo was a big car but was ageing rapidly. The dumpy looks put my Dad off so he didn't bother with the test drive. He never really thought of buying a Mazda and the bland 626 was the pinnacle of boredom. Unforunately, my Dad can be a bit car-predjudice - you know he'd buy a VW not a Skoda or buy a European car not a little known but just as good Korean car. This meant the Vauxhall, and their image which has been flushed down the toilet more times than Vanessa Feltz TV career, was never going to be on top of the list. It was the same with the Citroen. Amazing family estate car

It is a group 6 insurance, making the insurance costs nice and low. It has a 5 star NCAP rating (which is fairly standard nowadays, but nice to know anyway) The tyres on our club model are 205 55 R 16 so for a budget tyre expect to pay around £50 each, for a medium to high range tyre between £65 and £70 is average, my personal fave a Yokohama S306 is about £63 each fitted, so in my books reasonably cheap. The published combined fuel consumption is about 56MPG and in my experience so far,I would say that is about right. Looks - The Astra comes in...

This was because my son is currently looking for a new car to replace his very reliable but ageing current motor, a Citroen AX. The Saxo has always attracted my son with its good looks and decent performance, but interestingly enough he was interested in the smallest engine option of the First. There are several reasons for this, all unbelievably and unusually sensible coming form my son!!
