This review, I'm afraid, comes four years too late, as the Saxo went out of production in the year 2000. It has since been replaced by a more 21st century, bubble-like car, the C3. There no question that the C3 is the nicer of the two, with its chic French curves, however at £9.000 it's not to everyone's liking. And so we come to the humble Saxo. Weighing in at 805kg the Saxo is very small, so obviously would not be suitable for big families, or indeed for people with big legs which invariably get crushed if they sit in the back seats. ...Myself and my son recently visited our local Citroen dealer because we organised a test drive on a 1.1i Saxo First. This was because my son is currently looking for a new car to replace his very reliable but ageing current motor, a Citroen AX. The Saxo has always attracted my son with its good looks and decent performance, but interestingly enough he was interested in the smallest engine option of the First. There are several reasons for this, all unbelievably and unusually sensible coming form my son!! Firstly the 1124cc engine keeps insurance costs down and also it is very light on the drink when it comes to the petrol pump. Citroen Saxo 1.1i SX

Advantages: good looking, decent spec, nice to drive, nippy

...This is a great little car which I highly recommend. Yes, it's got a few faults (which car hasn't) but so far it's given me 2 years of pretty much trouble free motoring. It's nice looking (MUST have foglights or it looks incomplete!), stereo is adequate, has central locking, sunroof, keypad immobiliser, economical (450 miles of town driving on a tank), electric windows. Mine has been nicknamed Saxo-van due to its great carrying capacity. The back seats are quick and easy to fold down, and we managed to get a large sideboard in it (with the boot closed too!) which wouldn't fit in a new golf! It's very nippy, and smooth and quiet to drive. Even when travelling at 70 - 80 mph it's still got some oomph! Two little niggles:- 1) the pedals are too close together - takes a while to stop hitting the accelerator when you want...

I purchased this car in September 2000 (X-reg). I chose the colour Poseidon Blue (Metalic). At the time Citroen were giving a years free insurance away with the car, which as a young male driver this I found was invaluable. The basic on the road cost of the car was around £7200 after the cash back deal. (£800 pounds at the time). With a 1.1i petrol engine (1124cc) you will find the Saxo usually does around 45 miles per gallon even when you give it some stick. Citoren Saxo VTR

...I have had a Citroen Saxo VTR now for 9 months, which I have enjoyed every minute of. The car itself on looks, in my view is amazing, the Mark 2 version which I own has more curved headlights than the Mark 1 version with more rectangular shaped lights, personally I prefer the former. The poseidon blue paintwork shines very well in sunlight, and is very eye catching. The interior is a bit tacky and very rattly at times, especially driving along uneven roads. The rattle does get annoying at times, but with the car's sound system at a moderate volume you do not notice it at all! The seats of the Saxo look like they've come straight out of the 80's, the Peugeot 106 leather seats would have been a lot better option for the car. Saxo VTR pocket rocket that kept stalling!

It also had two rear headrests which others do not come with. Citroen saxo 1.0i

Advantages: Cheap to run, no problems with them.
Disadvantages: not much space in the back.

...The Citroen saxo 1.0i is a great little car for a young person who has just pass their test, i have always loved this car when they first come out in 1996. The little 1.0i engine is a small engine but is still a nippy car around town. It is good for petrol it don't drink that much but the style of the standed one looks abit boring. The boot is big enough to get a good lot of shopping in there or your speakers if you like them in there. The saxo has power steering but thats it, it don't have a ^ sunroof ^ front spot lights ^ allow wheels ^ cd player just a tape/cassette player ^ body kits stuff like that but that don't matter because its still a good little car and cheap and Reliable. they hold their price well, but if you want something better like faster and better looking then go for the VTR OR VTS....

Saxo VTR - Nippy Little Hatchback

Advantages: Cheap to buy, low insurane, quite nippy
Disadvantages: Not as quick as the VTS, No electric Mirrors

...I have a 1.4 and a VTS model of saxo but did recently testdrive the later 98bhp model The Good Points Its has a brilliant insurance group think its a 6 or 7 compared to the 16v VTS which is a group 14, ideal for younger drivers. More econimical than the VTS so won't be at all bad if they are thrashed. Styling is up to date with a phase lift model after 1999/2000, has the good looking body kit that the sports models have. Nice subtle alloy wheels. Handling is brilliant, the perfect car for having a play down the country lane twisty roads, will grip the road really well with the right tyres on. The Bad Points All the usual saxo problems such as, brake aren't brilliant, sunroof leaks, steering knocking and over sensitive alarms although all these can be fixed quite cheaply and upgrade brakes make a hell of a lot...

Citroen Saxo Forte 1.1 W-reg (2000)

Advantages: Great town car, economical to run and have managed to fit an amazing amount of stuff in (including a 6 ft tree out of the sunroof, a complete patio set and a full-on Ikea buy-out - not bad!). Cheap to service and is quite nippy when it isn't full!
Disadvantages: Can't adjust rake of driver seat so my husband has to stand on the clutch pedal to get in! Also, very low braking on the pedal - this is a design issue & technically safe but can feel v last minute.

...I bought a metallic green Citroen Saxo Forte 1.1 3dr in April 2000 for the princely sum of £6k which was £1200 off the list price at the time because no-one seemed to want metallic Woodland Green. It has been a very reliable car - now done 45K miles and apart from one warranty niggle (airbag light faulty) and the stepper motor having just had to be replaced it has been fine. The positives are it is cheap to run, rarely needs oil / water etc topped up and we have only just had to replace two of the Michelin tyres it came with. Great for town driving - a bit Fiat Punto on the motorway - feels a bit tinny for passengers, but handles fine. Easy to park, cheap to service (and car tax) and surprisingly spacious for carrying loads (back seat folds to 45 degrees, or flat if you remove the seat pad. On the negative front, the airbag...
