A review on my 1995 1.9TD Citroen ZX Mephis

Advantages: Economical to run and cheap to buy. Fairly fast. Good engine. Reliable. "Biodiesel ready".
Disadvantages: A little noisy. Not fashionable.

...~ Why I bought the 1.9TD Citroen ZX ~ I bought this car because I do over 20,000 miles a year, and thought that I could save a fair bit of money by switching from a Petrol to a Diesel. I posted on a forum of car enthusiasts, asking what I should go for. I said I had £750 to spend on a Diesel and wanted reliability and economy above all else. The responses were all on the same lines: buy a Peugeot 306 with an XUD9 engine, or a Citroen ZX with the same engine. I bought a Citroen ZX in the end because it was cheaper than buying a Peugeot - the Citroens don't look anywhere near as good, and are therefore less sought after. ~ How much did I pay? ~ I paid about £700 for my Citroen ZX with 100k on the clock. This was a bit over the going rate, but I'd called up several other adverts for cheaper cars first, and they had all gone...

Review of Citroen ZX

The Citroen Saxo.

Advantages: Quirky. Fun. French.
Disadvantages: Creaks and shakes. Slow. Unsafe.

..."AAAhhh, it's a little Citroen Saxo." Yes, for about a year now I have been driving around in my little Saxo, and I now feel qualified to tell you something about it. This review, I'm afraid, comes four years too late, as the Saxo went out of production in the year 2000. It has since been replaced by a more 21st century, bubble-like car, the C3. There no question that the C3 is the nicer of the two, with its chic French curves, however at £9.000 it's not to everyone's liking. And so we come to the humble Saxo. Weighing in at 805kg the Saxo is very small, so obviously would not be suitable for big families, or indeed for people with big legs which invariably get crushed if they sit in the back seats. An avid Saxo-spotter, I have found they come in a spectrum of colours, the most offensive and most striking being bright yellow. It...

TD4 S

Advantages: Good engine performance
Disadvantages: a few rattles on the trim & road noise

...I went for the TD4S, it's the lowest specification model, no air con, steel wheels, one driver side air bag, basic radio/casette. The plus side to this is it's less attractive to potential thieves than a TD4 with all the "bells" The car drives very well as the 1951cc diesel engine is excellent. I have not found any great problems with acceleration it moves off quite well and while not a sports car it copes when there is a need to pull away a bit sharpish in to moving traffic. The gearing is excellent, very positive and quite forgiving if you are over geared for the speed, takes a lot to stall it. It has a hill descent control device on the gear stick, designed for descending steep slippery off road hills. I don't think I will ever use this facility and maybe should have been an optional extra. The car handles very well and is nice to...

Land rover Discovery TD5

Advantages: 4 wheel drive with lowering prices
Disadvantages: A little soft on cornering

...If you have the money to spare and are looking for a car that has Looks - Style - Comfort - Reliability and a real name that's had a good following over the years, I would highly recommend the Land rover Discovery. The biggest asset at the moment is that the price throughout the range has been reduced dramatically due to the recent changes in importation and dealership, and if you shop around you really can pick up an excellent deal, Even Secondhand. With the TD5 ( Turbo Diesel ), you get real quality even with the earlier models. The only drawback with the earlier ones is that the ride tends to be a bit bumpy, but having said that the early models are more economical to run in general averaging 30 - 35 MPG. The more recent models ( I.E 1997 Onward ) usually run at around 25 - 30 MPG, But obviously they are much more luxurious...

Reg Vardy Citroen - A Fine Dealership

Advantages: Excellent Service, Good Stock of Cars
Disadvantages: None at present

...*Reg Vardy ? Citroen Dealership* *Background* My Old-Faithful Seat Ibiza recently failed its MOT and the garage in question wanted a very large sum of money to carry out any further repairs. Considering my bank balance is not exactly worth of a lottery winner, I thought I?d venture out and buy a replacement vehicle. Scary thought. Being female, and wanting to enter a male dominated environment does not exactly instil me with feelings of joy! To begin this journey, I bought the local newspapers to search for a roadworthy car of reasonable value. The choice was overwhelming. Everywhere I looked was another dealership; offering yet more deals, for what were reported to be excellent cars. Not to prove a point, but I know nothing about cars, so didn?t really know what was a good bargain and what wasn?t. So where better place...

MY CITROEN SYNERGIE

Advantages: spacious, easy seat removal, good view
Disadvantages: expensive french parts, large 'blind spots'

...electric windows all round. It has remote locking and alarm setting. The power steering is effortless. The only disadvantages are the high cost of some spare parts and the fact that the side vision is not too good i.e. there are large blind spots which necessitate looking over your shoulder sometimes to check before manoevering. These cars hold their price quite well. The new model which replaced this is the Citroen C8. I would love to be able to afford on of those!...

Land Rover Discovery 2.5 TD5 GS 5 seat

Advantages: Excellent traction, driving good, bullet-proof, good residual values
Disadvantages: Heavy in town, fuel consumption, minor niggles

...My Land Rover Discovery 2.5 TD5 GS is the 5-seat model, first registered in December 1999. It was bought in June 2000 for £20,000, having cost approximately £27,500 new. It had nearly 5000 miles on the clock. Bodywork was and is immaculate and the previous owner (a rural chemist) buys a new one quite frequently (every 6 months!). This car had also had lamp protectors and fog lamps fitted over the standard spec, with floor mats and mudflaps also fitted. The point at which bought it was just after the start of the drop in new and used prices and appeared to be priced to keep cash flow going as it has only depreciated by £2000 over 1 year. Main off-road use has been up rough tracks (to go hillwalking or visiting relatives). Otherwise its main off-road use has been up our gravel drive or mounting a pavement to turn or park. Needless to...

1994 1.9TD SX Hatchback

Advantages: Economical, spacious, comfy cruiser
Disadvantages: Expensive to repair, noisy

..., steering wheel mounted audio controls. A lot of extras for it's year... I have a few niggles though.... I'm quite tall (6ft4) and it's a bit of a squeeze getting behind the wheel, once there though it's fine. A few of the electric gadgets are starting to fail, which is common with citroens i'm told. Hydraulics!!!! what can i say. when its working properly its amazing, the term "magic carpet ride" is spot on. However when they go wrong they go WRONG. The Xantia's hydarulic pump runs the suspension, steering and brakes. If it fails you are really stranded. The system is self levelling running off "spheres" 2 in the front, 3 in the back. These are expensive, about £60 each! I've had to have the 2 in the front replaced. Finding a local garage who knows anything about them is also quite difficult. Mine is an early version of the system...

Citroen Saxo First 1.1i

Advantages: stylish, economical, reliable, good value
Disadvantages: none

...Myself and my son recently visited our local Citroen dealer because we organised a test drive on a 1.1i Saxo First. This was because my son is currently looking for a new car to replace his very reliable but ageing current motor, a Citroen AX. The Saxo has always attracted my son with its good looks and decent performance, but interestingly enough he was interested in the smallest engine option of the First. There are several reasons for this, all unbelievably and unusually sensible coming form my son!! Firstly the 1124cc engine keeps insurance costs down and also it is very light on the drink when it comes to the petrol pump. Despite this you musn't get me wrong because it is certainly no slouch, the lightweight of the body ensures that. It can accelerate very nippy around town and from traffic lights, a suprise for such a small...

Citroen Saxo 1.1i SX

Advantages: good looking, decent spec, nice to drive, nippy
Disadvantages: Main dealer prices and customer service

...the brake! 2) my front windows rattle when down! My only other gripe has not been the fault of the car but of the main dealer - avoid them like the plague. £50 to replace a bolt in the sunroof (!) and £120 for a service! And there customer service is poor too. I have since found a small citroen-approved garage which is great and very cheap. My 27,000 mile service only cost £40. Overall, a great car!...
