Bye Bye stale biscuit smell! St Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse
Advantages: New product smells floral and pleasant - seems to colour more evenly too
Disadvantages: still fades a little patchy but think they all do
...This product is for the new improved product (the photo is of the old packaging)
I have been a St Tropez devotee for years now, I love its colour and the fact that its so easy to apply. In fact one of my first reviews for dooyoo was for the whipped bronze mousse. In this review, I mentioned that one of the disadvantages was the smell - people compare it to stale biscuits and it's just horrible. The colour is great but the smell lingers, but as all fake tans smell, I just kind of put up with it...until now!
2009 saw St Tropez releasing new improved versions of their best selling products. As well as sleek new black on white packaging, there were major improvements to the smell. It claimed to have a pleasant fragrance - hmmm I thought, I am a bit sceptical, I will have to try this for myself!
I bought a 240ml bronzing mousse...

Fake Bake - Beyond Bronze THE BEST FAKE TAN EVER
Advantages: easy to apply no streaks fantastic colour
Disadvantages: smelly, brown sheets
...and never be a tanned as me.
It fades well and exfoliates off when you want it, but it can be maintained with lots of moisturiser and re-applying every few days. However I would advised scrubbing it off and starting again to avoid any patchiness (not a good look!)
The downsides.... as with most fake-tan be prepared to smell of biscuits and wear old PJs to bed, your sheets will also be black BUT THIS WASHES OFF IN ONE WASH! A few things I would put up with for such a wonderful tan!
This is by fake bake but you can buy it in Superdrug, it's cheaper than the original fake bake. I have tried both and much prefer fake bake beyond bronze as I think it is a better colour....

Tan-Fastic
Advantages: Works well, Smells ok
Disadvantages: Packaging looks cheap, takes a while to dry
...well knows sun care companies and cosmetics giants.
Creating a nation of bronzed gods and godesses is big business it seems.
One product that caught my eye was a self-tan in gel form. This looked like it might be easier to apply than traditional lotions and it had a third off the price so I was convinced!
The product in question was L'oreal Plenitude Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Gel. This is a new addition to the L'oreal tanning range and claims to have the added benefit of smoothing the skin leaving it 'velvety soft' (which would be very weird when you consider the feel of velvet - if you skin suddenly starts feeling like that, I suggest you consult a doctor!)
Normally this product retails at £9.99 for 150ml, which may seem quite steep, but you only use a really small amount for each application so it does last. At the moment...

Be Bronze with Avon Self-tan Spray
Advantages: Reasonable price
Disadvantages: Instructions aren't too clear
......
~~~ The Packaging ~~~
The self tan spray comes in a brown (almost bronze!) 150ml bottle. The bottle is a nice, slightly curvy shape, but it is not the easiest bottle to hold. On the front, 'AVON' is written in gold letters, and below is the slogan 'be Bronze'. Below that in brown is the information: 'Self Tanning Lotion Spray - Light/Medium' and then the same again in two other languages. Although this says Light/Medium, I haven't actually seen this in Medium/Dark shades - this doesn't really matter to me as I don't want to go too dark anyway, but some people do! Quite an attractive bottle for the summer!
~~~ Application ~~~
Application instructions are on the back of the bottle. I don't know whether it's just me, but Avon instructions always seem to be very vague - either that or they just don't print any instructions at all! Anyway, this is...

St Tropez Self-Tan Mousse
Advantages: Easy to apply, even coverage, no streaks, won't make you go orange
Disadvantages: May make you smell a bit like a stale biscuit for a few days after application
...than £2 so save your pennies on all the advertised application products as the cheaper versions serve exactly the same purpose. Alternatively Boots do a self tan mitt for about £3.50 and St Tropez latex gloves 5 pairs for £2.50 so you can still get the same products if you don't have a hardware store near you.
So now onto the tanning itself. Ensure you have plenty of time and that you're not in a hurry when applying your tan. If you're planning to wear it for an event or night out then it's worth doing you're tanning at least the evening before, if not longer where possible, for reasons I will explain a bit later. Ensure you shake the mousse bottle well before application. If you do it correctly then it should start off as a liquid then froth up until you can barely hear anything being shaken in the bottle. One or 2 pumps of the mousse...

Go Bronze!
Advantages: Lovely golden colour, can build colour gradually, fades naturally, not patchy
Disadvantages: Smell, expense
...It happens about this time every year... the sun decides to show its face for a couple of days and the country unanimously decides it's now summer and girls all over the country whip out their brightly coloured summer dresses and men lose their tops (of course, this is more welcome in some cases than others - hairy men/ those with beer bellies, please keep those tops on!) Of course, nothing says winter like pale skin, especially against the gorgeous bright summer colours that have filled the shops this summer. Being naturally olive skinned, I find that a lack of sun over the winter can leave me looking decidedly washed out. While most self tanners are too aggressive for use on the face, Estee Lauder's Bronze Goddess Self Tan lotion is specifically designed to be gentle enough to use on the delicate facial skin, while still giving...

Beautifully bronzed babe!
Advantages: Beautiful real looking tan. Good value for money. Won't give you skin cancer!
Disadvantages: A little tricky to apply the first few times.
...product. I thought, if this is the best fake tan and it doesn't work then I'll resign myself to staying my natural colour, but in the mean time I'd give it a try.
ST TROPEZ WHIPPED BRONZE INSTANT SELF-TANNING MOUSSE
What a mouthful!
The bottle is not particularly striking or attractive when you see it in the shop but when you get it home you realise it is certainly well designed. It is made of thick plastic with the name 'Whipped Bronze' and small St Tropez logo on the front. It is green and white with black writing and has a fat nozzle dispenser on the top for ease of application. The dispenser is easy to use and not at all stiff to press down so you can use as much or as little as you want at a time. It also has a lid on top of that in order that the bottle doesn't leak, or press itself when it's in storage...

Shimmerific tan
Advantages: Nice shimmer, easy to apply, no nasty smell
Disadvantages: Tricky over heels and feet, bottle doesn't seem to last very long
...didn't expect it to be so good on both body and face. Its shimmer gave a nicely sun kissed look immediately after application.
The final result was a little oranger than I would have expected from the guide colour (which was more bronze). However, it didn't look fake and was a nice healthy tone. Its hard to judge how this would work on other skin tones, I'm very pale and have cool skin tones so self tan is always a bit risky, but this came out very nicely. It's really excellent to use on top of a real tan to extend it. This is what I did once I got back from my holiday to cover up my tan lines and make everyone just a little more jealous! It worked wonderfully!
I would definitely recommend this product. In fact, my mum was so impressed that she offered to buy it off me....no chance, I'm keeping this one!...

Sublime Bronze
Advantages: Instant colour
Disadvantages: makes your skin dry
...First thing is that this fake tan has an instant colour so if your running late this is perfect for a quick fix! but this isnt just a quick fiz, it is a long lasting lovely colour. doesnt make you go orange and people even thought i had been on holiday!! only problem is that it makes you skin go dry so would reccomend eiether putting moisturiser underneath or moisturising every day. it has a shimmer in it which gives you a nice, healthy glow. the bottle also lasts a long time so its great! altogether i would definately reccomend this product just be caeful how you apply and make sure that u moisturisee! because otherwise it will go patchy! oh and exfoliate before use, definately needed with this product!!...

L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Gel: very even tan!
Advantages: Very very even, gives a lovely colour and easy application!
Disadvantages: Takes some time for it to be absorbed.
...I have been using this tan for several years now and I recommend it to anyone!
Application:
Firstly I start by putting body butter on my feet and ankles, knees and elbows so they don't go bright orange.
I don't like using rubber gloves with this tanning gel as I find it makes it more difficult for it to be thoroughly absorbed into the skin. What I do is I start at the bottom and work my way up, regularly washing my hands. I do one leg, wash my hands. Do the other leg, wash my hands. Then the body, and then the arms. After washing the hands at the end so I don't look like I have white gloves on I put a little of the product on some tissue and smooth it over the tops of my hands.
Results:
A natural even colour which is easy to intensify with just one more application. It does have the fake tan smell afterwards but its not as strong as...
