Good Hotel for exploring Bristol

Advantages: Clean, comfy, modern
Disadvantages: Very expensive restarant and bar, rather sad swimming pool and gym

...This hotel in in the centre of Bristol within waling distance of Temple Meads Station. If you know Bristol then you will know that this location then might mean convenience but it's not gorgeous - a lot of Bristol was bombed in the war and rebuilt in the 50s and 60s and it shows! The hotel itself is newer than that though, but when you arrive it does look a bit tired and in need of a facelift. Parking is available and not difficult, though like most city centre budget hotels you have to pay extra for it, but I thought the £3.50 a night quite a good rate. It seemed a secure car park. . I checked in swiftly and the receptionist was helpful and friendly. I paid £104 a night for two people for an executive double (i.e. one grade up from the standard one) over the internet before we went. The hotel has a lot of floors (we were...

Clifton Arms Hotel

Advantages: The Best Hotel in Lytham St Annes.
Disadvantages: Whoa! is it pricey!

...This Hotel is in the prime position in Lytham. It faces the 2 or so miles of Lytham Green. There are scenic views of the Welsh hills and the Pennines in the distance and views of the Ribble Estuary. Close by is the famous windmill. The hotel takes its name from the Clifton family. They were the main landowners in the area. There are many references to the Clifton family locally. Their family seat was Lytham Hall. This is open to the public on occasion. It is now owned by an insurance company. (AXA) The Clifton Arms Hotel was first erected on Clifton Street, in the space that is now Park Street, on or around 1794. This was apparently a coaching inn. Its successor, the current hotel, was built in 1840 on West Beach. In 1875 all buildings comprising the hotel were raised to the same height. Clearly the hotel was built at the height...

Jarvis Hotel, Bristol

Advantages: Good leisure club,nice rooms
Disadvantages: Unfriendly staff

...The Jarvis Hotel is a couple of miles north of Bristol in an area called Winterbourne. As a former country house built in the mid 19th century and with extensive grounds it has every going for it as a hotel. The Jarvis group have spent a lot of money refurbishing the place including an excellent Poolside leisure Club with swimming pool, spa, solarium and under-utilised exercise equipment. As is often the case the pool is a little small and you soon learn how a goldfish must feel swimming around the same extent of water only about 6 times your body length. The rooms in the old part of the hotel are quite spacious but you may find those in the newer part little better than a motorway lodge for size. They are clean and tidy and have the obligatory tea-making facilities. All rooms are en-suite. The bar is cramped but nearby is a huge...

Quality Hotel at Bristol

Advantages: Well located and pretty cost effective
Disadvantages: Busy in the Summer

...miles); the Mall at Cribbs Causeway (3 miles); Bristol Zoo (8miles); Clifton Suspension Bridge (8 miles); Broadmead shopping centre (6 miles); Cardiff Millennium Stadium (45 miles). We were off to the South West for our Summer Holiday and we needed somewhere to stay on route. The Holiday Inn Express at Bristol North seemed an ideal choice and it was booked simply on the internet for the date we required. As a family of four we needed a room with enough space for the night and hotel facilities to allow us to relax part way through our long journey. The receptionist informed us that our room was on the ground floor. It was non-smoking (as requested). OUR ROOM We went to our room which contained a double bed and a sofa bed as booked. It was clean and welcoming and the beds made properly. There was an open wardrobe with attached...

Triumphant Thistle Bristol

Advantages: luxurious, friendly, great location
Disadvantages: the price!

...Broad Street, Bristol, BS1 2EL Phone: 0870 333 9130 Fax: 0870 333 9230 www.thistlehotels.com 4 * Check in 2pm Check out 12pm Prices from 80 per room per night I first came across Thistle Bristol on a romantic weekend away with my boyfriend in 2001 We chose it because it was on special offer in the Daily Mail, and it looked fabulous in the photos. Since then we?ve been back every October to celebrate our anniversary. Located around 1 mile from Bristol Temple Meads station, this Thistle hotel sits right in the heart of the town centre ? 3 minutes walk from the main shopping centre, and 3 minutes from the nearest pubs and restaurants. Great for us because we don?t drive. Car parking is available at an extra charge. At first sight I was very impressed! A charming Old Victorian style building. The rooms are equally...

Thistling in Bristol

Advantages: Very nice service
Disadvantages: Very NOT nice prices

..., Bristol, and Birmingham and have typically found the same service up and down the country and the hotels are pretty much identical! The service and rooms up and down the country are all a mirror image of each other. Initially I found this bizarre but now I’m used to the same spiel I get and automatically answer “no” to “Would you like a wake up call?” and “Ok then” to “Would you like a complimentary paper?” This time I stayed a Thistle Hotel in Bristol Temple Meads. I didn’t see much of Bristol but the city centre, which is where the hotel is located, is very pretty and parts of it have a village atmosphere with its little personal shops as opposed to the big bustling commercial streams of department stores. I arrived in the evening and entered what was a pretty grand looking...

Nice pair of Bristols!

Advantages: Good location. Bristol is better than it sounds at first.
Disadvantages: None really, but the afternoon barmaid let the team down.

...and started playing about with ?Priceline?. They?re absolute fiends! You select a location (in this case, Bristol). You select a quality level (in this case, four star). You give your credit card details. You make a ridiculous bid (in this case, £40). You wait to be committed to a random hotel of their choice? Three minutes later, I was informed that my ridiculous offer was accepted. We were off to the Marriott Bristol City Centre. Bristol has two Marriotts. One is better than the other. This is probably the poor relation, but I can tell you that it certainly isn?t at all bad. If you want to know more, read on by all means! Arriving in Bristol mid-afternoon on the M32 motorway, we hung a left and there was the hotel. Very easily spotted, this 10 storey building was not particularly attractive from the outside. After a few...

Clifton Park Museum, Rotherham

Advantages: Plenty to see, free entry
Disadvantages: Closed on fridays

...Clifton Park museum is located on the fringe of Rotherham town centre. The museum is housed in Clifton House, a Grade 11 listed building dating from 1793. This house was designed by John Carr, a prominent architect of that time and it was the family home of the Walker family. The original occupier was Joshua Walker and his wife. Joshua's father had made his fortune in the local steel industry. Following Joshua's death this house was passed through various generations of his family and remained in their possession for almost 200 years. Clifton House stood in 70 acres of grounds and the majority of this land came into the ownership of Rotherham Borough Council in 1891, who opened up this area as a public recreation area called Clifton Park. Shortly after this date the Council also acquired the house and in 1893 they opened this house as...

The Brigstow Hotel

Advantages: TV in the bathroom!
Disadvantages: No gym

...I stayed at the Brigstow Hotel in Bristol following a night out with the company I work for. The Brigstow is definitely one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in. There are 115 bedrooms at the hotel and all have the usual facilities - air conditioning, mini bars and a safe. There is a nearby car park, so parking would not be a problem. I stayed in a standard bedroom which was tastefully decorated - the furnishings were modern and colourful, which makes a change from some of the gloomy chains that are about. The bed was really comfortable too - with huge pillows! I also liked the fluffy rugs on the floor - the whole room felt very cosy. The bedroom was en suite with a good sized bathroom with a bath and a shower. I think my favourite thing about the hotel was that the room I stayed in had a small plasma screen fitted into one...

Five Star Luxury Hotel

Advantages: Walking distance to the fashionable shopping district of Avenue Louise.
Disadvantages: A long walk to the Grand Place where many eating places are based.

...This impressive hotel located on the Avenue Louise was close to Brussels' most fashionable shopping district. The 5 star Hotel Bristol Stephanie is ideally situated for both business and leisure travellers. The hotel offers 142 spacious bedrooms (Classic and Executive), a restaurant « Le Chalet d'Odin », a bar « Stefany's », conference and banqueting rooms, a fitness centre and an underground parking. We booked this hotel through Expedia.com for two nights travelling on 17th June 2005 (Friday to Sunday), and paid only £100.00 for two people in a standard room. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, tea & coffee making facilities, trouser-press, iron & ironing board, cable & satellite TV with an interactive system (Internet Acces and in-house video), minibar & telephones (with modem, voice-mail, fax plugs...
