Medicine as a career

Advantages: can be very rewarding if you are awake enough to appreciate it
Disadvantages: terrible pay, terrible hours, lack of funding

...I wanted to be a doctor since I was a child, perhaps slightly encouraged by my mother, who had always wanted to do medicine but her parents could not afford it. Having gained all the required grades, I went to medical school in London at 17. Being a medical student was a lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was lucky - I had a county council grant towards education and living (although the living part didn't even pay 1/2 of my rent in student hostels in central London)which a lot of students don't have now. I still had to hold down 3 jobs as well as studying to make ends meet and emerged after 6 years with almost £10,000 student loan debts. I remember how jubilant we all were after 6 years (we did an intercalated BSc in 3rd year) to finally pass the exams and to be able to put Doctor in front of our names and to finally be...

George's Marvellous Medicine

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...?George?s Marvellous Medicine? was the first of Roald Dahl?s stories which we read to our eldest son. It?s the story of a little boy who has a real stinker of a grandmother. She?s rude and scary and bosses him around all the time. One day George?s mum and dad have both gone out, leaving him alone with his Grandma. George has had enough of Grandma bullying him and so decides to cure her of her cantankerous behaviour with a special potion, which he?ll give her instead of her usual medicine. He finds an enormous saucepan in the kitchen and lugs it all around the house, essentially putting in a bit of everything he finds [lipsticks and canary seed included!]. He even makes sure he adds some brown paint so that it is the same colour as Grandma?s real medicine! He then boils it up to make sure that everything?s nicely mixed together before...

Medicine or Cosmetic

Advantages: Very effective for dry skin and chapped lips
Disadvantages: Initial cost and strange smell

...'s grazed knee! However, before I get too carried away, there is a warning on the tube not to apply the cream to puncture wounds, infections or lacerations. I got some on a deep cut by mistake once and whilst there was a slight stinging sensation it easily washed off and there was no further stinging. One downside for me though is the smell, which seems more medicinal than cosmetic and took me a while to get used to. I also find the colour slightly disconcerting - a strange peachy/brown - although it appears clear when you apply it. Although it calls itself a cream, its consistency and texture are more like a gel and as such I find it a bit off-putting applying it to large areas of skin (eg using it as a moisturiser) and prefer to use it on smaller "problem" areas. The initial outlay on a 50 ml tube is around £17 which sounds a lot...

...George lives on a farm with his mother, father and grandmother, George is a nice boy but he cant stand his Grandma and who can blame him she is the most rude and nasty woman you could ever imagine. Georges parents go out for the day leaving him at home to look after his Grandma, all morning his Grandma keeps threatening to tell his parents he is naughty if he forgets to do anything for her. George decides to get his own back on her and makes a medicin potion using all the tablets and chemicals he can find around the house and farm. At 11 am it is medicin time for grandma, George gives her some of his potion and she begins to grow and grow and grow untill she is as big as the house with her head sticking through the roof. Review of George's Marvellous Medicine - Roald Dahl

George's Medicine Making Morning

Advantages: Fun for small children
Disadvantages: Lacked a certain sparkle that other Dahl books have

...An extract for George?s Marvellous Medicine was in a Roald Dahl Anthology that I was privileged to own when I was younger and was one of the things within it that I really liked reading. Because of this I was quite pleased when I discovered that my brother had the book in his Roald Dahl box set. The book is like most of Roald Dahl?s offerings rather simple and easy to read. The story is rather vibrant and entertaining and the covers of the book can merely contain the colourful characters bursting to get out. The book itself was first published in 1981 and is not too long a read, coming in at 104 pages long in my copy, which is a Puffin edition, published in 2001. Despite saying that this book is 104 pages in length, not all of these pages contain writing and some contain only a minimal amount, as the story is accompanied by some...

Just Car Clinic - Just poor clinic

Advantages: Specialists in accident repair
Disadvantages: Many aspects of the service overlooked or poor

...Just Car clinic were recommended to us by our insurer following an accident which wasn't our fault. There was minor cosmetic damage on two panels on the rear of the drivers side. They came to collect the car on a Friday afternoon, telephoning before they set off. The driver walked around the car and recorded the damage inflicted by the accident, did not leave me with any form of receipt or a copy of the damage indication form he filled out to take back with him. And left. The website has it's own on-line tracking system where you can enter your car's job number and track the progress of your repairs. Unfortunately, the Just Car Clinic kept my car for nearly a week (until the following Friday) before they even looked at the damage and submitted an estimate to my insurance company, which raised problems with the courtesy car a separate...

Visitations by Clinic

Advantages: Some brief interludes of musical originality
Disadvantages: Lyrics banal and uninteresting

...?Visitations? - Clinic?s fourth full-length album release - is unfortunately going to do nothing to help their already-marginalized status in the ever-widening field of post-punk indie rock. At the release of their debut effort in 2000, they were critically acclaimed as an experimental yet accessible take on their punk influences. Likened to such greats as Sonic Youth and The Velvet Underground, it seemed they could do no wrong ? they were a favourite with the late John Peel and even supported Radiohead on a UK tour. But every subsequent release since then has focussed more and more on the worst aspects of their debut, turning out endless versions of the same guitar-driven thrashing monotony, with this newest album being no exception. The new album?s first single ?Tusk? is one of the highlights of a terminally dull musical experience...

Review of Visitations - Clinic

Clinically bizarre.

Advantages: Fans of noise will like it.
Disadvantages: Won't set the world on fire.

...Clinic chose to call themselves thus because they believe the current music scene is dead (true), and that they are the ones who can breathe new life into its still-twitching corpse. On the strength of this album, the miracle isn't likely to happen for quite some time but it's a promising beginning. The excellent, rollicking lead single The Return Of Evil Bill is one of the highpoints here but there's not much else that can match it, save the gentle Distortions. Most of the songs are under three minutes long and use the same ingredients: harmonica, ultra-distorted guitar, and muffled, high-pitched vocals. The atonal noise on dislpay is the only thing that recalls the oft-cited influence of The velvet Underground. It's also a pity that the band have sold out by soundtracking the latest Levi jeans advert. It may earn the fans but it won...

Laser Hair Removal at Oxfordshire Clinic

Advantages: Practically Permanent removal of hair, Ego Boost
Disadvantages: Cost may be prohibitive for some

...As a introduction to this review I feel it is necessary to give you an overview of how I was introduced to this clinic:- Five years ago I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). One of the symptoms of this condition is excess facial hair. This has been heightened by the fact that I come from quite a hairy family anyway and in addition I have dark brown hair. Most women who have dark hair end up dealing with the dreaded moustache but with PCOS this develops into pronounced facial hair on the chin and generally the "beard" area. Other symptoms include a loss of control over your weight and so all in all my self esteem was at an all time low. Last year I was introduced to a neighbour who I quickly became good friends with. On one alcohol fuelled night we got chatting about PCOS and its trials. She told me...

An Essential For The Medicine Cupboard

Advantages: great medicine for a sick child with a high temperature or minor pain, cheap, sachets are great too
Disadvantages: rather bright pink colour, very sticky and syrupy

...Calpol is one of the most useful things for parents. It is liquid paracetamol, and a wonderful medicine that can be used for children with high temperatures, colds, headaches, teething pains and so on. It is suitable for babies from three months of age, although it is often suggested for babies aged two months who have just had their MMR vaccinations. But as they get older, the strength seems to diminish and I would recommend buying Calpol Six Plus for older children. Calpol is a pink colour and very sticky, but all children seem to like the taste, which is important. A sugar free version is available too. The box of Calpol sachets is also very useful, especially for when you are out and don't have a 5ml measuring spoon to hand ! The sachets contain the right amount for the dose, so can be administered directly from...
