...I have always enjoyed watching stand up and happily spend many evenings with the other half, falling asleep giggling to something silly. My favourite comedians include, Bill Bailey, Eddie Izzard, Jim Davidson, Lee Evans and Tim Minchin. While browsing through HMV a few weeks ago, making a few usual impulse buys in the hope of finding something good, I spotted Russell Howard's "Live" DVD. The name rang a bell and I briefly remembered seeing a 2 minute clip of Russell on youtube and finding it funny. So the DVD was brought for 9.99. If you have never seen Russell Howard before or seen any of his material, I can only describe him as being hysterically funny with a boyish charm. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. Mr.Nice by Howard Marks

Advantages: An Excellent, Intelligent, Thought-provoking, Honest read.
Disadvantages: Sags a bit in the middle but picks up again as soon as he is in prison!

...I found this book to be excellent! It was a really enjoyable read. Howard Marks puts across his entire life in a completely honest and genuine way. He is clearly a likable man and no matter what he has done you really can't help but be on his side! The fact that the basis of this book is his life involved with Cannabis did not really occur to be as a bad point within this book as it is told with such charm, wit, honesty and integrity that he could have been writing a book on anything and I'm sure I would still find him a brilliant writer and man. This is not an easy-to-read stoners book, it is a detailed journey of Mark's life and (as I quickly established) he is not a man with no brains who smokes weed, he is incredibly insightful, clever, funny and intellectual. Fistful of $$$ For Clint

Advantages: great character, cult film
Disadvantages: cheesy music

...Okay. Let me say that I have been a Clint Eastwood fan for years and I love nothing better than relaxing in front of an old Western on TVs. Fistful of Dollars was "the big one" in Clint Eastwood's career. It put him on the map as a cult hero figure. Lots of action, good short to the point lines and a plot you can follow. He was able to give the audience a true grit-eating, swearing, smoking, bad guy shooting, tough guy - 'the Man with no Name'. He did everything he could to outmaneouver the opposition (on both sides) and still manage to come out on top. As far as westerns - 'Spaghetti Westerns' that is -it's got to be one of the great ones. Clint's Manipulation

Advantages: A lesson in how to make a film with a storyline. No more SFX- please!!!!
Disadvantages: Contrived, not as emotionally involving as it should be. Beat Scorsese to an Oscar.

...Am i being brave or just downright stupid? Everywhere you go for a review of Million Dollar Baby, i found i got, and i'm sure you will too, a positive picture of the film, now don't get me wrong it's not a bad film, on the contrary, it is good, just not great. It is also widely over-praised. It is too-cliched, too forced and just seems a final 'honour me with an best actor Oscar' plea by Clint. This film won best film Oscar because of the Academy's new-foung love affair with Clint's work, but probably more because of their dislike of Scorsese, when in reality it should have been neither but the not-even-nominated Eternal Sunshine, Farenheit, The Incredibles or out of the nominations available, Sideways. ...Introduction I watched a documentary about this film and the life of Howard Hughes just before Christmas and thought it looked like an interesting film, although Leonardo di Caprio seemed like an odd choice for the main character. The length of the film also put me off. Then one evening with absolutely nothing to watch on TV, I got it out. It would be hard to make a bad film about a man with a life like Howard Hughes', but even so, I was more impressed that I had expected to be.
