There's no mixture like Clitheroe
Advantages: Independent and interesting shops, history and scenery
Disadvantages: Not the town for people seeking big retailers ie. Debenhams, HMV
...Language fascinates me - the way names are formed and evolve has always been a thing of great interest - so it may be of equal interest to readers to know that in its original form, the town was recorded as "Cliderhow" or "Cliderhou". How well developed the town was up to the twelfth century, I am uncertain but it is considered a Norman town - the castle which still stands to this day (featuring a large hole in one side which resulted from an assault by the Roundheads during the English Civil War) dates from around 1186.
Walking into Clitheroe by way of the A671 (better known as "Whalley Road" locally) the pedestrian is likely to be struck by the sharp incline in the pavement as the road climbs up the hill and only peaks at the main Castle Gates. Imagining the landscape if you rubbed out Sainsbury's, the shops, houses and whatever...

Mist over Pendle, a beautiful view
Advantages: A truly beautiful area of England
Disadvantages: Property can be pricey
...Living in full view of Pendle Hill, in the heart of the Ribble Valley, deemed as one of the best places to live in the UK, I feel very fortunate indeed.
The market town of Clitheroe is the main trading post, with regular markets four days a week, a good range of shops and a history dating back a thousand years. The Norman castle stands proud above the town, now recently restored and upgraded, courtesy of a lottery funded grant. The castle has a museum and 16 acres of grounds, all of which is accessible to disabled visitors, a good move.
The Ribble Valley is classed as an area of outstanding natural beauty, with 44 villages, some of which have won best kept village awards on more than one occasion. Waddington, West Bradford, Bolton by Bowland and Downham are some of the prettiest you can find.
We are amidst the forest of Bowland...

Visit the Centre of the Kingdom
Advantages: Rural Lancashire, the place were I live
Disadvantages: None
....
History can be seen in Clitheroe with its Norman keep that dominates the limestone rock high above the town and can be seen from the back of my house. You can also visit the local Clitheroe Castle Museum which is open from 11am ? 4.30pm. In Ribchester you can tread in the footsteps of Roman centurions who were stationed at a garrison here. You could also stop a while in Whalley and Sawley and walk amidst the ruins of their Cistercian Abbeys.
The Ribble Valley has a wide selection of first class accommodation, restaurants and shops, with a reputation for high quality service, good value for money and a very friendly welcome. I would recommend that you visit Cowman's Sausage Shop in the main street of Clitheroe or visit our famous local vine merchant Byrne.
The Ribble Valley is ideal for walking the 'Ribble Way' (waymarked) 70 miles (113km...

Booth's come out top
Advantages: Supermarkets as they should be.
Disadvantages: I am trying to think of one
...Well, certainly here in Lancashire. Having been an ardent fan of Tesco''s for many a long year, I was beginning to find that standards were going down the pan, food was either going back to the store or into the bin because it was innedible, staff looked disgruntled and some had the charm of a pit viper, so, time for a change.
In Clitheroe, we are blessed with quite a choice, two major chains and Booth's. The latter was visited and browsed, prices were on a par, some things were a tad more expensive, but, for food that is edible, well presented, with a choice that ranges from the four corners of the globe, to well represented local produce. Items were duly purchased, from courteous staff, who take time at the till and don't whip things through so fast you have no idea what it happening.
That was it, we were hooked, now, I...

What more could you want?
Advantages: Great food and location; friendly staff
Disadvantages: Only terrestrial tv in room (no real hardship)
...fitted bathroom. From the outside the lodge building is single storey and very plain, but has the advantage of a sweeping view across wildlife meadows towards Pendle Hill (witch territory).
This place is a naturalist's dream and the hotel owners have been working with the World Owl Trust (based at Muncaster in Cumbria) to fix owl boxes in the woodlands. Collectively we saw/heard hares, pheasant, a tawny owl but apparently deer can be regularly seen - and an eagle owl is known to fly there (the WOT found a pellet). Members of the Trust (yes, I am) currently get a reduction on the room rate.
The hotel is off the main A59 road between Skipton and Clitheroe (ignore the Google directions which are hopeless) and in easy reach of places such as Haworth, Malham Tarn and the Forest of Bowland. You do need a car but the bar prices are very...

This is me.
Advantages: It's me
Disadvantages: ditto
...but relax.
19. Favourite toothpaste?
Macleans Whitening. Well, that's what we've got at the moment.
20. Favourite restaurant?
The Calf's Head - Worston (near Clitheroe). Fantastic food, wonderful setting, friendly staff, and my parents know the owners!
21. Favourite flowers?
Red rose (sorry Yorkshire), although I am currently cultivating a patch of wild meadow flowers at home - it's call my lawn. (I hate mowing the thing)
22. Favourite beverage?
Spitfire Kentish Ale.
23. Favourite sport to watch?
Football - Wigan Athletic. Have played rugby since being a ten year old, but to be honest, it's probably only because I was never skillful enough to be any good at football.
24. Preferred type of ice cream?
Not overly keen on ice cream. Do they still make Milk Lollies? If so, my favourite is...

Confuse the neighbours
Advantages: Bakery
Disadvantages: Not near enough to home
...Whilst your neighbours bring home Sainsbury's and Tesco bags from their weekly shop on a Saturday afternoon, confuse them by going a little bit further for some quality products from booths that they have never heard of!
Knutsford is my favourite with a large Bakery with delicious cakes. No small children can go round poking your unwrapped bread and cakes as it is all displayed behind a glass counter. It has a fish counter, butcher, rotisserie, florist, cafe and full deli and is the largest and most posh booths i have ever been in. I even saw Vikram from Coronation St once buying his bacofoil! I first heard of booths on my trip to Windermere where there is no bakery but a tea shop where the most delicious light snacks are served.
Clitheroe is not bad. It doesn't have a complete bakery although it still sells fresh and warm bread...

BOW down in admiration for this area of our LAND
Advantages: A peaceful, beautiful and interesting slice of England
Disadvantages: None
...Bowland transit bus service links Clitheroe with the Hodder Valley villages of Newton, Slaidburn, Dunsop Bridge, and Whitewell. The linking B1 runs a shuttle service between Slaidburn and Settle.
On Summer Sundays the Pendle Witch Hopper runs a circuit around Pendle Hill, and on weekdays it links Nelson with Clitheroe via Newchurch, Barley and Downham.
To the west of the AONB lies the market town of Garstang, easily reached by the half hourly bus 40 between Preston and Lancaster. There is also the Garstang Super 8 minibus to the village of Calder Vale.
In the Lune Valley, the Lune Villager (80/81) service provides local connections, seven days a week, running into the late evening, from Lancaster to Caton and Hornby, with some services going through to Wray and Wennington and a more limited service to Bentham and Ingleton in North...

Rectella Bar-Be-Quick Grill & Bake Trolley.BBQ
Advantages: Great for small BBQ partys
Disadvantages: Hard to build
...on the left hand side so you can move it more easily.(this wheels are hard plastic)
The colour of the unit is black and evergreen and comes flat packed that is very heavy to carry the box does have carrying handles to make life a little bit easier. We had to use another trolley while getting our shopping. If you were to buy this BBQ I would give yourself at least 3 hours before you wish to use it.(as it is very time consuming and stressful)
I would love to sit here all day but am now going back into the garden to fill up the 10 ft pool we got today so stay tuned I will let you know how I got on........

Does it work?
Advantages: It's big and green and easy to spot
Disadvantages: There's no jobs inside.
...The Job centre sends shivers down my spine - and not in a good way. It's like walking into the roughest pub in town what with the security guards, obvious smack-heads and general burberry wearing oiks. Now, I'm not a snob. I wander round happily in my hoody and have been known to go Tesco in pyjamas (getting dressed is such hard work) but when I enter the aforementioned hell hole, I feel like the queen. Maybe it's because I wash my hair or have clean clothes on, who knows - all I know is that it's the bane of my life.
My Experience:
I've had to endure the jobcentre on 3 separate lengthy occasions and at 3 different places - Clitheroe, Bradford & Burnley.
The first was for only 2 months, the second for 10 months and the final one I've recently encountered (I try not to make a habit of being out of work but I'm jinxed...
