Samsung CLP 300 - not worth buying

Advantages: Small laser printer
Disadvantages: Unreliable

...I always had and ink jet printer. But at work I used laser printers and I loved them. Unfortunately they have been far too big for home use. I am not sure why but I always have been convinced that a laser printer is somehow better- the speed, the quality, just everything. How wrong I was!!! A couple of months ago I saw the Samsung CLP-300 on a website and it looked brilliant. Well, everything looks brilliant if someone wants to sell it. Anyhow, for me it looked good enough. But I did not want to pay £150 for a new printer. So, I had a look in ebay. And there it was my Samsung CLP-300 for £100. Well, I bid on and got it for £112 in the end. The CLP-300 claims to be the world's smallest and lightest colour laser printer. Well, at least at that time. It?s measurements are 390 x 344 x 265 mm, which is pretty small for a laser...

Colour That Doesnt Run

Advantages: Good Price, Small Package
Disadvantages: Small paper tray and no manual feed

...I have had a colour ink jet printer for years, and this has serviced me well, however I always used to get annoyed with the smudging that can occur whilst the ink is drying. Also when using a printed envelope the address would run if it was raining when the postman was delivering or on the way to the post box. Advantages: Speed, cost and quality
Disadvantages: Nothing I can think off at the moment

...This is a great printer. Beware that there are two types: The CLP 300 and the CLP 300N. The 300N is for networking. This means you can print to this printer from more than one PC if you have more than one PC in your house or office. For home use it is a waste of money because I do not print that often to justify networking. The quality is great and really amazing and the speed is mind blowing. If you need REAL photo quality printing, this is not for you because on closer inspection you will notice defects - Especially if you are a photo printing connoisseur. There is only one button - The on-off button, nothing else! Easy to use for the "not so computer literate", but could be disappointing for those who likes to tinker a bit. Great digital but a stepping stone to acoustic

The next day I purched the CLP240 in the same sale. The CLP240 is marked up at a RRP of £1699. The fact that I got it for £650 off shows how much room there is for negotiation. Compact, good quality laser printer

Advantages: Compact, good print quality, easy set-up
Disadvantages: initial pre-heating is noisy and takes 30secs, small paper tray, no both side printing

Pleasantly Surprised

...I started this review ages ago and totally forgot about it. So much time has past that at least one newer model the clp-510 has been released. I thought this might be useful for anyone considering buying second hand. I have always extolled the virtue of Laser printers over ink jets they are in the main cheaper to run and much faster and give a quality finish for text and the sort of business printing I do (charts, code, non photographic images). Don't Buy This Printer!!

Advantages: A very cheep machine
Disadvantages: A terrable printer all round.

...I've had my CLP 510 from Samsung for just on 12 months so I feel I have gotten to know it quite well...in this time, I've only printed a total of 13,576 pages - thats the TOTAL from 12 months of use, NOT per month - this is very light use. I mainly use it for printing text with graphics included on the same page...not photos, just drawings etc. I'll start by saying that the prints per min quoted by samsung in a joke (most manufactures quoted specs relating to this probably are). The output quality is average for a 1200 x 1200 dpi machine. Text is fine, but the colour graphics output is not good at all. (I've previously used a 1200 x 1200 Kyocera machine which had exelent output for graphics). Trying to colour match / calabrate this machine is also hopless - I even use a moniter spyder etc to get my colours right. I basicly had to...
