Is this" the best cathedral on planet earth" ? Durham Cathedral
Advantages: An amazing cathedral, Unesco World Heritage site, free entry,
Disadvantages: none that I can think of
...INTRODUCTION:
The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham, otherwise known simply as Durham Cathedral is in the city of Durham, in North east England. The cathedral is thought to be one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and because of this has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Castle which is opposite the Cathedral just cross Palace Green.
The Cathedral was built on a peninsula of land created by a loop in the meandering River Wear and the west end towers over the gorge. The northern front of the Cathedral faces onto Palace green and from here you can get a view of the entire 143 metres of this building which is an imposing sight. The view from the air shows this view to perfection but I only experienced this in a postcard as we did not have access to...

Durham Cathedral - Britain's Best-Loved Building!
Advantages: A beautiful place to visit
Disadvantages: None
...the cathedral is open to the public every day, occasionally some of the services and events mean that visitors may be restricted, so it may be worth checking before you go.
If visiting the cathedral you may also wish to visit the castle nearby and Durham City with it's cobbled streets and shops are all within easy walking distance. It is also nice to walk along the river or go on a boat.
A great city to visit and great day out!
General enquiries about the cathedral, services and times etc can be emailed to - enquiries@durhamcathedral.co.uk

Royal connections but not that luxurious -Durham Marriott hotel
Advantages: Comfortable, convenient for city sight seeing
Disadvantages: luke warm bath water and average food in restaurant
...Durham Marriot Hotel Royal County
Old Elvert, Durham DH1 3JN
A BIT OF SCENE SETTING:
This hotel is part of the Marriott chain but is an old hotel which was once the home of Elizabeth Bowes an ancestor of the Queen Mother. Apparently it was often visited when it was privately owned by Edward VII when he was up in Durham. It has had quite a large series of extensions and now boasts 150 bedrooms, some of which are suites and family rooms all and have en suite bathrooms ( As you might expect in a hotel I would have thought). This is a four star hotel right in the centre of Durham so perfect for a city break as you can park your car in the hotel (complimentary) car park and walk round the city which is very compact and just a hop over the road from the hotel.
We booked on the internet and got a special deal for two night?s bed...

Durham is perfect
Advantages: best mix of attributes of any university in britain
Disadvantages: not a good place for slacking off
...Durham is a beautiful experience from the moment you arrive on the outskirts and see the awesome cathedral and castle towering over the countryside. Five things in favour: (i) collegiate system with 16 unique college experiences ranging from traditional on the bailey to modern on the hill; (ii) highly ranked science and humanities departments with world reknowned faculty that cares about undergrads; (iii) purpose built science site with amazing modern facilities by british standards; (iv) excellent sporting, social and fine arts opportunities for all - not just the few; (v) a happy, engaged, good looking and confident student body that has both high IQ and EQ. The main downside is that it can get quite cold, although at least it rains less and has more sunny days than most other parts of the british isles. Also, Durham is small so it...

Durham University is'nt worth the effort of getting there
Advantages: Easy to meet people, Very reputable University
Disadvantages: Condescending, Isolated, Upper-class and ill-Equipped
...I started as an undergraduate in Durham in September 2009 studying Chemistry. Personally I disliked the place so much that I had to move to Leeds where I am now much preferring the student life.
I Originally applied there because of its status and reputation which are very good. At the time it was listed third in the chemistry league table behind Oxbridge. I went on an overnight open day and had an interview. I didn't much like the place then either but I thought it would grow on me (which it didn't). Just goes to show that first impressions are important and you shouldn't pick a university solely based on its reputation.
Durham is a very small 'city' and can feel very claustrophobic. The Hill colleges are so far out of town (relative to the size of Durham) that people can't be bothered to go - I was in Collingwood...

DURHAM CITY....and no bull
Advantages: Interesting historic city
Disadvantages: I didn't really find any
...with its special position, encouraged the growth of the city from the castle and cathedral downhill to the river crossings.
Most of the mediaeval street layout still exists today, although very few of the houses of that period survive.
The Cathedral has a quite spectacular setting, standing high on a hill in a loop of the River Wear, it's visible for many miles around and is especially striking at night when the cathedral is lit up and can be viewed even while driving along the M-way.
Durham's a small city and as it lies very close to the A1(M) motorway, it's very accessible, in fact, a short drive along a dual carriageway from the M-way exit brings you directly into the heart of the city and ample parking. Which co-incidentally, is how we arrived.
We parked the car in a multi-storey just on the edge of the city-centre and made our...

Durham - Traditional but exciting
Advantages: The people, the beautiful landscape and the constant activity
Disadvantages: The cold weather - not somewhere to improve your tan...
...I've jsut entered my final year at Durham, and it's fair to say I've kept myself very busy. While Durham may not be famed for it's rocking nightlife (though I promise you, it does have one), I'm yet to meet a student here who's bored or regretting their choice of university. Wandering round Freshers's Fair a few weeks ago,I found hundreds of activities and societies I hadn't even heard of, and there's plenty to keep me interested. Durham doesn't offer a course in theatre, and yet we have arguably the most active theatre scene of any university in the country, with many students going into theatre after they graduate (check out www.dur.ac.uk/DST for more info). Our student radio, Purple, is really well done and run completely by students.
The collegiate system is also a big bonus in Durham. Everyone is automatically part of their...

COME TO DURHAM
Advantages: SIZE
Disadvantages: SIZE
...Why don't I start with the classic Durham quote:
"Go to Durham, take my car, it's wonderful"
Thanks to good ol' Bill Bryson for that one. I would back up that quote but you certainly can't borrow my car to go!
I'm studying at Durham (Engineering if you really want to know) and absolutely love it. The "city" has all the necessary features proving that size really doesn't matter (keep telling yourself that!) as long as everything's in the right place. The city has 2 cinemas, many pubs, a cathedral, 2 castles (one more famous than the other), a top-quality university (or at least I'd like to think so!), a botannical garden. BREATHE... a river, an independent record store (so rare these days), an indoor and an outdoor market and 3 nightclubs!
"3 nightclubs?" I hear you cry! Yes, only 3 but how many do you need? Unfortunately 1 is...

DURHAM: The posh bit of the North East
Advantages: History, Castle and Cathedral, Scenery
Disadvantages: Lack of shops, pubs, bars and attractions
...UPDATED!!
You've probably heard of Durham, even if you haven't visited there? It's quite famous for it's cathedral, and for being quite picturesque. I am from Durham. I was actually born in Sunderland but we don't need to know my life history for this really, do we? So I am from Durham (but now live in Coventry) and my parents live in Durham, and my Grandma and My Aunt and her postmans mother-in-law's brother's dog etc. Most of my friends live in Durham too, so I frequent the place about once a month. At least I try to!
+ + + SHOPPING + + +
Durham, like any other city or large town, possesses a wide range of shops. All the usual such as bhs, river island, topshop, marks and spencer and woolworths are here, as well as an eclectic mix of the more unique shops and boutiques.
There are two main shopping centres. The main one is...
