Advantages: Lots of animals, large enclosures Disadvantages: Very hilly, lots of walking
...My nephew?s birthdays are within a couple of days of each other and I?d been struggling to find them something they haven?t already got. My boyfriend suggested taking them out for the day, so off we went for a family day out at Colchester Zoo.
Getting there was quite simple seeing as I only live 5 minutes away but their website has some good directions whether you go by car or bus etc. The car park is quite big so there are plenty of spaces, even when it?s busy.
***Admission***
We paid £13.99 per adult and £7.75 per child (3-14yrs). Under 3?s get in free and there are cheaper prices for senior citizens and disabled etc.
***Inside***
Once we?d paid to get in we were handed a welcome guide. This showed a large map of the zoo on one side and lots of info about feeding times and donations on the other. The map shows how...

Review of Colchester Zoo
Advantages: Amazing fish and chips in the restaurant Disadvantages: Hotel overpriced and over complacent
...We stayed at Milsoms a couple of nights ago and did not have a fantastic experience. Yes, the food is excellent in the restaurant, but we were not happy to pay £4.75 for bread that arrived one minute before our main course. Also, there were several problems with our overnight stay in the hotel. When we arrived, our room was freezing cold, the radiator in the room was not working (and it snowed that night in Colchester!). A plumber had to be called out but it seemed surprising that the staff had not noticed the problem earlier. In fact, we got the impression that nobody had checked our room as there was only one teabag left for the two of us, only one sachet of hot chocolate and no white sugar. There is a sign saying call reception for milk and cookies, but when we did so we were told the cookies were not available today. It must...
Advantages: Always one close by, quick turn out, children are welcome and catered for. Disadvantages: Toilets can be quite disturbing, not all dishes taste as good they are described.
...Harvester RestaurantsRestaurant Reviewed: Stag and Hounds
Winchester Road
Basingstoke
Hampshire
(next to Comet and Home Base)
The Harvester chain of Restaurants have over 2000 outlets across the United Kingdom and owned and operated by Mitchells and Butlers, who claim to be the UK's leading operator of managed pubs, bars and restaurants. Harvester claim to offer healthy eating, drinking and entertainment in one reasonably priced outlet.
**** Parking and Getting a Table *****
As with most of the Harvester's I have visited, there is usually ample free parking at the rear of the establishment. However on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch times these places are heaving with customers, so avoid the crowds, go early and if possible ring and reserve a table. The Stag and Hounds is no exception but fortunately...
Advantages: Has Everything You need Disadvantages: Bit of an under-rated town
...to visitors.
There are many restaurants in Colchester ranging from the fast-food outlets to family-friendly restaurants providing traditional English food, Chinese, Indian and Italian and many more. The choice is up to you. As well as the restaurants there are many pubs, clubs and wine bars to be visited.
And just as you thought that was it there is more. Colchester provides a wide range of leisure activities. These include attractions for the old and the young and can be enjoyed by anybody. There is roller skating in the largest skating ring in East Anglia, which is in the same building as the much loved game of Quasar. The mercury theatre offers a bit of culture which is near ?Jumbo? the water tower. A little further on from the theatre the cinema can be found which has recently opened and is as comfortable as they come...
...Introduction
I was recommended this restaurant by a friend who was really impressed by the quality of the food and service of this restaurant from her visit. I was interested to see this for myself on a wintery evening at the weekend. The restaurant itself is located in West London which is a quite posh and upmarket area. To the left of the restaurant was an office building and to the right was a back store retail outlet. Directly opposite this restaurant was an Allied Irish bank outlet. I was pleased overall as the location made it easily accessible on the public transport network in London. The restaurant is located near Stanford Brook W6 area of London and is just a few minutes away by walking to the restaurant.

Review of Colchester Castle
Advantages: easy to find, free parking clean zoo Disadvantages: lots of walking
...each exhibit.
I’m not keen on the idea that animals are caged, but Colchester has gone to every extreme to allow as much freedom as possible. The monkeys have a respectable living area, lots of ropes and toys. The elephants after years of building now have a waterfall and it appears that they are allowed access to reasonable grassy area. They no longer reside on a concrete slab. You are still able to feed the elephants with the vegetables provided but it’s behind a fence. This creates a bottleneck. If you would like the experience of feeding the elephants, collect the food and wait till the crowd has dispersed, otherwise expect to be pushed and shoved.
The restaurants offer very expensive greasy dishes, take a picnic and enjoy the entertainment laid on during school holidays.
This zoo is not full of modern rides...

Review of Colchester Zoo
Advantages: Good cheap food Disadvantages: The time we had to wait for the table!
...I thought I’d write an opinion on The Hungry Horse after I went there for my Birthday meal. There are many jazzy and flashy restaurants around the Colchester area and me, my sister and her hubby and my man were all booked in at Clowns. I have been there a couple of times before and quite liked it although it isn’t exactly cheap. Especially if the two men were going to order steak……..which they did! My sister suggested we go to The Hungry Horse after she saw a sign for Steak on the cheap!!! She rang up and booked us a table for around 8 O’clock.
I wasn’t sure really what to expect but my boyfriend said he had been before and they serve massive portions. We arrived to find 2 spaces in the car park, which was very convenient as me and my man would be going on somewhere else later, but my sister...
Advantages: Over 200+ animals, white tiger and free parking. Disadvantages: Some areas difficult to access for the disabled.
...I have to say, one of the best zoo's I have visited in this country. Such a vast amount of wild animals to see and lots of activities for the whole family.

Just south of Colchester on the A1124 off the A12. I departed from Sidcup, Kent which took just under a hours drive. I used the AA Autoroute finder which was very easy to follow.

Review of Colchester Zoo
Advantages: Modern, excellent food, great service Disadvantages: They don't take bookings and it can get busy
...I enjoy going out for business lunches now and again and I am very fortunate because working close to the Essex/Suffolk border there are some very good restaurants in the area which are nicely rural but easily accessed from the office. One of my favourite haunts is Milsom's Restaurant at Dedham.
Milsoms Restaturant is within the Milsom's Hotel which is a Victorian country house built in 1850 and bought by Dorothy and Arthur Milsom in 1959. In 1981 their son Gerald Milsom transformed it into the Dedham Vale Hotel and Terrace restaurant. Twenty years later, Geraldine Milsom transformed the building into a stylish bar and brasserie which is very well known in the area for its fine food and informal atmosphere.
It is run by the same people who have The Pier Hotel in Harwich and The Talbooth and the Maison Talbooth also in Dedham...
