House of Fraser Guildford

Advantages: Great presentation, nice staff
Disadvantages: A little expensive!

...House of Fraser, or Army and Navy as it was previously known, has bought business and people to Guildford for many years now. But why is it that people keep coming back? What is it about the House of Fraser experience that keeps luring them back to the store? My nearest House of Fraser has been shut for about nine months. But, after huge rennovation, it has now re-opened it's doors and it's stunning. It has marble floors, glass bannisters, chrome escalators... the list goes on - it's a nice modern building. Inside, there is a great collection of just about anything. There's clothing, homeware, electronics - all made by well-known and good quality makes. You can also find selections of toys, easter eggs, or other goodies depending on the time of year you visit. There is an extensive cosmetics department, with just about every...

House of Fraser - House of Hell

Advantages: Good coffee bar....
Disadvantages: Rude staff, over priced products, poor layout

...I went into the GlasgowHouse of Fraser this weekend after being given £100 worth of vouchers. I had been into the store on a couple of previous occassions but each time, I had the feeling that I wasn't good enough to shop there and that I didn't belong. When you start to worry that a bouncer won't admit you because you aren't wearing the right shoes or if your hair isn't combed just right, or god forbid your toddler isn't wearing clearly visible designer labels, you know it isn't going to be an enjoyable shopping experience. I decided to have a look for some shorts and t-shirt for my son since the sun was shining (Being Glasgow I hadn't anticipated the heat wave we had). I thought I had missed the Children's section as their was only a tiny corridor worth of clothing for children from 0-14 years. I saw a cute little t-shirt but...

Anarchy and Old Dogs by Colin Cotterill

Advantages: Fun to read
Disadvantages: None

...also in touch with ancient beliefs and all things spiritual. The use of language is delightfully witty and sardonic. Colin Cotterill's engaging plot and droll narrative blends beautifully a first-rate modern (well almost modern) mystery with the old ways of the spirit world and shamanism. Set against the backdrop of a country ruined by long term political upheavals with many inhabitants living in extreme poverty, Cotterill treats their individual stories sympathetically and with an understanding that comes from having lived and worked himself in South East Asia. This is an amusing and unusual series of books. Anarchy and Old Dogs is in fact the fourth book in this series and I would love to read the first three but the way the characters are subtly developed means a veteran of the series would not be bored by going over old...

This United State, Colin Forbes (EDIT)

Advantages: Good use of locations, good descriptions
Disadvantages: Stretches credibility beyond breaking point

...The premise behind This United States by Colin Forbes is an interesting one. Not unique, but certainly interesting. The USA has decided to take over the UK by a mixture of guile, treachery, bribery and armed aggression. And only Tweed and his team of British Secret Service agents can save the day! The novel opens with a bang, as a team of CIA assassins attempt to murder the former head of the CIA in Mayfair. Fortunately secret agent Paula Gray stumbles over him, save his life and so Cord Dillon is spirited away to a secret underground bunker on the Kent coast. The novel is over 530 pages in length and is packed with exciting incidents such as the above in Switzerland, in the Black forest and in Kent. It has all the hallmarks of being a great novel. But in my opinion, sadly, the book is flawed. And fatally so. Tweed and his...

Thumbs Up for Fraser!!

Advantages: Everything! So much to see and do
Disadvantages: Dingos and sharks.

...Fraser Island is a beautiful island off Queenslands coast. If you're planning on driving you'll need a 4 wheel drive though as it is a sand island. You are able to camp behind the sand dunes for a small fee, and this is an experience that will be remembered. If this isn't your style, there are also various resorts and hotels offering different types of accommodation. There's lots of local wildlife to see, such as the dingos, which at times can be a little too friendly (make sure if you're camping you lock any food away, and bins or the dingos will help themselves). There are some great inland lakes and streams that run out to the ocean which simply must be see. They're also fantastic for a refreshing dip, and most are fresh water so they're good for a bath if you're roughing it. There are also scenic flights available which is a great...

Colin Forbes The Cauldren

Advantages: Another great book by Colin Forbes
Disadvantages: A little bit over the top

...This is the fourteenth book in the Bob Newman, Paula Grey and Tweed stories; this book was released on 10/01/1997 I my opinion this book is definitely on par with Colin Forbes' other S.I.S novels. This is a brief description of the story. Paula Grey and Bob Newman discover a woman's body floating on the Californian coast, her identity unknown. At the same time, a ship disappears into the fog. Sensing an impending catastrophe, Tweed hurtles across the globe, as a continent begins. This is a fast paced, action all the way book as a billionaire industrialist called Vincent Bernard Moloch with concerns in the US, the UK and Middle East, and the director of the world's biggest multinational called AMBECO, invents a new type of explosive called Xenobium. Supposedly more powerful than the A-bomb, Moloch makes a point of demonstrating it...

Mystery Man by Colin Bateman; Murder is our Business

Advantages: Humourous, light reading and good for holidays
Disadvantages: Neuroses of the hero can be annoying

...drivers, a wealthy publisher and an assortment of oddball clients. The story converges to a murderous climax involving Auschwitz, an ex-Nazi, a ballet dancer and a powerpoint presentation. The final end of the book is very weird and leaves the ?life of the hero? open for follow on books. In my opinion, the Anglo Saxon swearing is a bit overdone, even allowing for the characters and the setting. However it did not spoil an enjoyable summer read. The book is probably not everyone?s come of tea as the ?hero?s? personal problems, although generally humorous becomes annoying and even repelling at times. This is the first time I?ve read a Colin Bateman novel; I selected it based on the fact that it was a Richard and Judy summer read (they advised Shadow of the Wind ? which is in my list as an all time favourite) and I would have given it...

Colin Deserves A Moajor Success

Advantages: Brilliant consistent player
Disadvantages: Seems to choke in the majors

...The years are moving on and still Colin Montgomerie awaits his first major success. Unfortunately Mongomerie does not seem to be getting close to a major title any longer. It is some time now since he came so close at the US Open. Since then the game has moved on and the emergence of first David Duval and then Tiger Woods seems to have sent Montgomerie backwards. So has he got the game and the temperament to win a major. Many of Montgomerie?s wins on the European circuit have come when he has dominated a tournament or got himself into position ahead of the last round to blow away the opposing players. This seems to indicate that his game is together. Montgomerie is as natural a golfer as you can find. However this is not as straightforward as it sounds. He is not a manufactured or constructed golfer like Faldo but he is not...

Fraser Island 4WD Bus Day Tour

Advantages: beautiful
Disadvantages: TOURISTY! Crowded

...Fraser Island is one of those "must do" things for backpackers when travelling the East Coast of Australia! It is the largest sand island in the world, home to wild dingos (wild dogs for those a little mystified!), can only be reached by boat from the mainland, has no sealed roads so is only attainable by 4WD vehicles and is covered in beautiful scenery. I went on a day tour from Hervey Bay which is where most tours will leave from. I got picked up from right outside my hoste although they were about 15minutes late and I thought I had been forgotten for a little while there! A number of tour operators run these 1 ady tours and I looked into them and honestly believe they are all much of a muchness, all around $120 (50 quid) per day, all spending the same amount of time on the island and all visiting the same attractions! We got...
