It's not just another crowded Asian city

Advantages: Relatively modern, decent facilities, reasonably clean
Disadvantages: Chaotic traffic, little night-life

...Colombo is probably the only very "big" city in Sri Lanka. However, it still has only a population of half a million, which is quite small when compared to the metropolises of India. Its relatively small size does have its advantages : it's reasonably easy to get around the city, and most parts are quite clean. Many of the major hotel chains can be found in the city, with many of the big hotels clustered together in the commercial heart of the city near the sea-front. These hotels have fantastic views of the Indian Ocean and ships coming in to Colombo habour. Some great bargains can be had especially when it comes to clothing. Shops like Odel unlimited and House of Fashion offer great quality original designer clothing (much of it made in Sri Lankan factories) and amzing prices. Location, Location, Location!!

Advantages: Clean and tidy
Disadvantages: Poor location, poor staff, poor amenities

...I chose to stay at the Cristoforo Colombo Hotel for a weekend away simply because it was fairly cheap and was one of the few hotels in Rome that had a swimming pool. Looking back, this was a foolish decision to make. As the hotel was a long distance from the centre of Rome, i spent much of the weekend on buses and underground trams trying to reach the main attractions, and did not even get to use the pool (which it should be noted, looks triple the size on the photo's provided by some websites). Location and Transport Problems: The location of the hotel was not a problem that we couldn't overcome, as Rome has an extremely good public transport system, however the staff at the hotel were not very helpful and it took a while for us to figure out how to reach the public transport, and how to use it. Good place to go

Advantages: Has everything under the one roof.
Disadvantages: Some of the clothes shops are quiet expensive

...Centro Colombo for any visitors is a good place to go. I spent some time working in Lisbon last summer and found it quite useful. The cinema shows all the latest releases in english and it's quiet cheap. Can't say I enjoyed McD's which you'll find everywhere but there is a great selection of restaurants on the top floor, inclduing one cerverjaria Lusitania I think it's called which does really good food. The supermarket downstairs has an excellent selection especially in wine and other beverages. Some nice clothes shops as well but a bit more expensive than I'd thought. Well served by the metro and it's just across the road from Estadio da Luz, home of Benfica....

What shall I call it?

Advantages: Air-Conditioned
Disadvantages: Looks a little old

...Colombo International Airport goes by many names including Katunayake International Airport (KIA) and Bandaranayake Internatioal Aiport (BIA. It is fully air-conditiioned and there are no covered walk-ways between the plane and terminal. You have to take a less than 30 second bus ride. The arrivals duty-free isn't too bad but Departures is even better although you won't be able to find as much electrical equipment, so but all of it in the arrivals section. In the departures, you will be able to find alcohol and prefumes etc. with one or two clothes stores. I have also heard news that they have recently added a new wing or are planning to add one in the near future to make the duty free departments bigger....
