A stunning hotel and location!

...The Columbia Beach Resort to look at is made of stone and wood and looks very grand. There are bellboys who will take your luggage and welcome drinks when you arrive! The resort has a spa which includes a gym, sauna, jacuzzi and plunge pools as well as both indoor and outdoor pools and a pool for toddlers and young children. It also has access to the small pebbley/sandy beach. The pools are freshwater and not heated oor is heated from November. The actual accomodation obviously varies a lot but our rooms were lovely and were interconnecting for our children. We had a massive square bath and a big shower in EACH ROOM as well as a superking bed. The rooms were made up by housekeeping TWICE each day and everywhere and everything kept very clean. There is also wifi in your room. As for the food WELL where do i start! Its amazing...

...and we saw the space shuttle Columbia explode whilst returning to earth, and who can forget the blackout that caused havoc in the USA and Canada? Of course not wishing to be outdone the UK?s capital had its own major power cut a little while later. Many thought initially that it was terrorist but it turned out to be just power failure on each account. Another major thing to happen in 2003 was the outbreak of the potentially deadly SARS virus, with flu like symptoms many people left it too late to seek medical advice and consequently died. The scare eventually reached its peak and was declared over, only to find that late December/early Jan2004 another person was found in Asia with the deadly disease. And still in the news is Michael Jackson and the allegations against him. Now personally I am not sure whether I think he is guilty or not...

Review of This Year In View - 2003

A Little Town with a Big Heart

Advantages: Fantastic skiing, good snow record, great friendly atmosphere
Disadvantages: Not much on hill dining, ski hill and town are separated

...A very cool laid back town, fantastic friendly locals with an influx of "dudes" from all over. Where is it: Approx 3 hours drive South of Calgary in British Columbia in the Canadian Rockies. It is an easy drive and straightforward to find. Just before Fernie, you pass Sparwood, where you can see "Titan" the biggest truck in the world! Not sure if it still is the biggest, but it is huge, you can see if from the road, but worth a stop to appreciate the size and great for kids. This is primarily a review on Fernie as a ski town but it is also great to visit in Summer, for golfing, fishing, hillwalking and mountain biking. There are probably more, but these are the activities that I am aware of. It is mainly serviced by chair lifts, there are no gondolas and none of the chairs have the bubble style cover, so it can be very cold...

British Columbia - one of THE places to visit

Advantages: Good value, magnificent scenery everywhere
Disadvantages: Long flight to get there. Not much else!

...Going for a holiday almost half-way around the earth need'nt cost the same. In Feburary of 2004 my wife and I flew Air Canada to British Columbia on the west coast of Canada for a packed ten-day holiday with a view towards seeing if we liked the area well enough to consider emigrating there. Believe it or not, it was our first trip to Canada. This sounds quite a statement for such a potentially momentous decision, but all the research I have done before hand suggested that BC had all the things we were looking for. Reasonable house prices, less pollution, less stress, beautiful setting and a people that suprisingly enough are a lot closer in attitude to us Brits than the inhabitants of the US are. (Never call a Canadian "American" as it is generally taken as an insult!!) We made the decision to visit Canada at the start of Spring. Why...

She was horrified at the dishonesty and crime of market traders in the 18th century and she intended this market to regulate trading and improve standards. It began in a mock gothic building financed by the Baroness who wasted her time and money. This enterprise was an abject failure within a very short time. BC, the Lucky Place

...We went to British Columbia 2 years ago to stay with a friend in Vancouver. She was able to get some holiday, so we were able to do some touring as well. Firstly Vancouver must be just about the most civilised city I have been to - it is rumoured that US citizens have been known to visit on holiday and just not go home. It has most of what makes San Francisco a fine place - mild climate, a harbour, a bridge, a fine range of ethnic restaurants, real beer, good public transport and friendly natives. One of our trips out involved going to Victoria on Vancouver Island by ferry. Victoria is the capital of BC and houses a fine museum with a massive collection of native artefacts including totem poles. It is also a bit like a quality British seaside resort, right down to the 2nd hand UK open top double deckers for sightseeing...

An Outdoor Getaway.

Advantages: Scenery to die for and more importantly whales watching!
Disadvantages: It is hard to get around once you're there.

Start of one of my best travels

...British Columbia BC and Alberta in the South West of Canada have the most impressing mountain landscapes, I ever have seen. The Icefield Parkway at the border BC and Alberta is called rightly the most beautiful height mountain road of the world. Every corner reveals photogenic motives of deep waterfalls, craggily mountains and coloured lakes.
