2001: A Space Odyssey review

...2001: A Space Odyssey is a sci-fi film made in 1968, directed by Stanley Kubrick and written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. One of the recurring themes in this film is evolution. The first 30 mins or so have no dialogue at all, and focus on a very distant point in our past, when a group of herbivore apes are attacked, and one is killed, by a leopard. They are also driven from their water hole by another tribe, so they sleep in a rock crater overnight. When they wake up, they notice that a huge black monolith has appeared in front of them. They are very curious as to what this is, and one of them touches it. Not long after, this particular ape remembers the monolith and realises he can use a bone as a weapon to defend himself. So they go back and kill the tribe that took over their water hole and, jubilant, the aforementioned ape...

2001 Maniacs - Slightly misses the mark

Advantages: Great gore scenes, acting is so bad its laughable
Disadvantages: Acting, acting and uh.... acting!

...becoming a worthy horror franchise or the type of horror comedy that the writers have gone for. The sequel is currently in pre-production and title 2001 Maniacs: The Beverley Hellbillies. I for one wont be counting the days until that one hits our screens....

Grey Comedy.

Advantages: Light entertainment, slightly different from usual, good value for money
Disadvantages: A poor interpretation of Pinter's play.

...A couple of weeks ago my English class and I, along with a couple of teachers, escaped from the classroom and trundled off to the Comedy Theatre (Panton Street, off Haymarket, Piccadilly). After a longer than expected and re-routed train journey (courtesy of Connex South-Eastern) we reached the theatre with a few seconds to spare before the curtain was raised and the performance (directed by Robin Lefevre) of Harold Pinter?s classic work began. The play is very dark and disgusting, although a dubious comedy, and we had studied it previously so ?knew? what to expect (I shall elaborate upon the plot later, but I?ll try to avoid spoilers). And of course, as with any school outing, there was a catch. Un Comedie d'erreurs

Advantages: Location is fairly central, staff are attentive to requests
Disadvantages: No restaurant, basic room facilities, housekeeping could be improved

...Hotel Comedie is a three star property in Geneve's City Centre, on the busy Rue de Carouge. It was business, rather than pleasure that took me there for my recent one month stay. The actual purpose of my trip was also hotel related, in that I was working with a project team on a system roll out for one of the most luxurious brands in the world. Unfortunately, at the time of my arrival they did not have a hotel in Geneve City..and they always book this place for visitors, as it is convenient to the office. The website gives away very little too, in fact it is nothing more than their name and address on a page, suffice it to say I was mildly alarmed at that, but my manager in Geneve had told me on the telephone said he had stayed here for a few weeks and it was ok. Arriving at the hotel by taxi is actually a challenge in itself...

2001 - A Space Oddity

Advantages: Great introduction and cinematography
Disadvantages: the story does not link or explain itself

...Few would deny the impact of 2001 - A Space Odyssey or the ingenuity of Arthur C. Clarke, but I believe that this story really lacks any fluidity and detail in its concepts. Also one of the main plots of the story is not fully explored, but it is hardly Stanely Kubrick's direction which is at fault. This is a story charting man's progress to the current pinnacle of achievement - SPACE TRAVEL and ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. While the introduction of the development of early ape-man's use of tools (which is very impressive - for a 1960s film I was surprised how excellent the gorilla costumes were it did not look fake at all) Anyway the film then abruptly enters the 21st century on board a space ship. Nothing is particularly missing, but as the story continues the story does not explain certain events or their significance it merely...

Sing Song Fun, 2001!!!

Advantages: great to practice singing or for parties!
Disadvantages: Might not be popular with the nieghbours!

The good thing about this CD is that it has a mixture of classic songs from 2001 and if you don't know the words, know need to panic as it comes with all the lyrics!
